From Isis magazine :  http://www.bobdylanisis.com/Dylan%20Digest.htm

28 June 2010

Rumoured 40Cd Box Set

A longer version of this report has been published in our ISIS newsletter which was mailed to subscribers last week. We seek more information on this matter for ISIS #151, the deadline for which is in approximately three weeks.

On Wednesday, 9 June 2010, on a Tampa Bay, Florida, arts page blog, John Fleming of the St. Petersburg Times said he’d recently conducted an interview with Didier Deutsch, whose name can be found on a number of Dylan album releases. The post mainly concerned various Broadway show original cast album releases. In the preamble to the interview, he mentioned that Deutsch had said that he was currently working on a 40-CD Bob Dylan box-set. On being contacted, Mr Fleming replied that Mr Deutsch had said he was working on a Bob Dylan project, right now, for Legacy Recordings - a 40-CD box-set, to comprise Dylan’s complete output, minus one album, with 2 CDs of bonus material. No other details were given, so we don’t know how Legacy counted Dylan’s Columbia albums nor what bonus material might be included. As for that “minus one album”, we assume that the phrase refers to 1973’s “Dylan” release. However, enquiries elsewhere indicate that, while this work may well be on-going, Sony has no plans to release the set. It seems the project was cancelled, in terms of an actual release, some time ago but, if Didier Deutsch is still working it, this suggests that the mastering stage, having been started, is being completed.

Presumably, this will allow Sony to stockpile the mastered albums for future use. So, if Sony’s planned a 40-CD box-set Bob Dylan has now put that on ice, what plans does it have? There are two other Dylan projects on-going at present. One is an 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono. The other is the next Bootleg Series release, as mentioned in ISIS # 150 (on page 9 and page 18). No release date has yet been set for either but both projects are being prepared for release around the same time, later this year. In respect of the next Bootleg Series release, rumours some time back suggested a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors but in better quality, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing (mid-June 2010) and Sony’s plans could change meanwhile. Anyone able to refute or add further details to any of the above should contact: [email protected]

A co-ordinated message from Desolation Row and ISIS:

A month ago, ISIS ended their report on the 40-CD box-set rumour as follows:

There are two other Dylan projects on-going at present. One is an 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono. The other is the next Bootleg Series release, as mentioned in ISIS # 150 (on page 9 and page 18). No release date has yet been set for either but both projects are being prepared for release around the same time, later this year. In respect of the next Bootleg Series release, rumours some time back suggested a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors but in better quality, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing (mid-June 2010) and Sony’s plans could change meanwhile.

It seems that this report was correct and that Sony’s plans have not changed.

The next Bootleg Series release, Volume 9, will indeed be “a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors”, as stated. Although based on “The Witmark Demos”, sources say it will include some Leeds demo recordings as well.  There are said to be 47 tracks. There is no information as to the packaging for this release.

Each album in “The 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono” will have a paper sleeve and the set will be in a slipcase, with a booklet, including liner notes by Greil Marcus. The albums will be from “Bob Dylan” to “John Wesley Harding” and it is believed that all are being freshly mastered for this release, using first issue copies of the mono LPs for reference, in order to ensure that they get the sound to match that on the albums when they were first released. Back at that time, albums were principally mixed for mono release, with less care and attention being paid to the stereo mixes, and many collectors prefer the mono versions. None have been issued officially on CD in mono before, although mono bootleg CDs are not unknown.

The official announcement of these two box-sets is expected in mid to late August, two months ahead of their actual release - itself about two months before Christmas. This suggests when Sony hopes to gain its greatest sales but why are the two being released at the same time? Most likely Sony is trying to tempt the buyers of one set to buy the other, too, on the assumption that the two sets will be reviewed together in the press and that reviewers may well compare “early” and “final” versions of some songs across the two releases.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Witmark Demos & Leeds Music Demos, the track listings of the circulating recordings are as follows (These are different versions than those released on Bob's early albums and the sound quality on the circulating Witmark demos varies from near excellent to decent. Certainly an official release would be a significant upgrade in quality)

Witmark Demos (New York, NY);
[June 62]
Blowin in the Wind
[November 62]
Long Ago Far Away
[December 62]
A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall
Baby I'm in the Mood
Ballad of Hollis Brown
The Death of Emmett Till
Let Me Die in My Footsteps
Quit Your Lowdown Ways
Tomorrow is a Long Time
[late winter 63]
All Over You
Bound to Lose, Bound to Win
I'd Hate to Be You On That Dreadful Day
Talkin John Birch Society Blues
[March 63]
Don't Think Twice
Long Time Gone
Masters of War
Oxford Town
Walking Down the Line
[April 63]
Bob Dylan's Blues
Bob Dylan's Dream
Boots of Spanish Leather
I Shall be Free
[May 63]
Girl from the North Country
Hero Blues
Seven Curses
[August 63]
Ain't Gonna Grieve
Gypsy Lou
John Brown
Only a Hobo
Watcha Gonna Do
[September 63]
Times They Are a Changin
When the Ship Comes In
[December 63]
Farewell
Paths of Victory
[January 64]
Baby Let Me Follow You Down
Guess I'm Doing Fine
[June 64]
I'll Keep it With Mine
Mama You Been on My Mind (guitar)
Mama You Been on My Mind (piano)
Mr Tambourine Man

This is a large and impressive body of studio work that took place over the course of a couple of years. The purpose of these sessions was to record demos for Witmark Publishing of songs that other artists might be interested in performing. Some of these songs were later released by Dylan, but not the versions here though. The most famous of these include Blowing In the Wind, Mr. Tambourine Man, Hard Rain, etc. Others were recorded at later CBS album sessions but not released, such as Tomorrow Is a Long Time, Farewell, Seven Curses, etc. Then there are the more obscure songs: Long Ago, Far Away, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Bound To Lose, Ain't Gonna Grieve. It's easy to see why these more obscure songs remain obscure. They just weren't that good. Of the more familiar songs that appear here, I'm convinced that these sound every bit as good, if not better, than the officially released versions. Plus there are some real unusual things here, such as piano demos of Mr. Tambourine Man, When the Ship Comes In, Mama You Been On My Mind, and The Times They Are A-Changin', among others. - http://www.punkhart.com/dylan/tapes/62-witmark.html

Leeds Music Demos, New York, Nov 1961* & February 1962

07: Standing On The Highway

Dylan to unveil new paintings in Denmark
2 hrs 4 mins ago

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – American music legend Bob Dylan, who has turned to painting in his later years, will unveil a new set of works in Copenhagen next month, the National Gallery of Denmark announced Monday.

Some 40 acrylic paintings and eight drawings from Dylan's "Brazil Series" created especially for Denmark's largest museum, also known as the Statens Museum for Kunst, will go on display from September 4 to January 30.

"It was an honor to be asked and a thrilling challenge," said the 68-year-old folk music icon better known for his songs such as "Mr Tambourine Man" and "Blowin' in the Wind".
"I chose Brazil as a subject because I have been there many times and I like the atmosphere," Dylan said in a statement published by the museum.

His new paintings "show the scenes from daily life in the cities, the slums and the countryside in Brazil where Bob Dylan has been several times," the museum's curator and director, Kaspar Monrad told AFP.
The collection includes depictions of wine growers, gypsies, politicians, gamblers and gangsters, "underlying the artist's fascination for the diversity of this country," Monrad added.
Dylan's style was "inspired by American realism from the start of the 20th century and deep affinity with painters... such as Matisse in the 1920s," the curator said.

It was the Danish museum that contacted Dylan's agent at the end of 2008 to invite him to paint a new set of works for the gallery, which Dylan worked on between 2009 and the first half of this year.
"I've been to the National Gallery of Denmark and it definitely is an impressive art museum. It was more than a little surprising when I was asked to create works specifically for this museum," Dylan said.
Dylan displayed his last canvas collection "Drawn Blank Series" in Germany in 2007 and in Britain in 2008.

A new 'special' show is likely to happen at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco - on August 25th.

http://www.bobdylan.com/#/news

Details still a bit sketchy, but apparently it has a $60 ticket price (general admission), tickets supposedly go on sale on the day of the gig and there are rumoured to be 'special guests'.

Goldenvoice Vice President of Booking, David Lefkowitz said, "Given the state of touring and how fees have escalated, it was a real breath of fresh air to do something very consumer oriented by eliminating all ticketing charges, it's almost a throwback to another time. Well, the only one who'd normally be likely to make an appearance Ouch! is playing in England at present.

Martha - I thought YOUR need to see Bob was off the deep end, but a friend of mine, John Hume (who has published several books of photos taken at Dylan shows and has an endless supply of hilarious tales of his experiences) takes the biscuit, I think.

Was out for a couple of drinks with him yesterday - I'd asked him a couple of weeks ago how many Dylan shows he'd seen. He gave me a list yesterday - 340 since his first one at Earls Court in 1978, followed by the 8 UK dates in 1981 and then several per tour since '84. He's seen something like 305 on the Never Ending Tour alone,  and even though he's always lived in Belfast, England or Italy, hes managed to catch Bob in concert in North America 81 times (not since 2005, though). I think he's seen him in something like 45 countries, including shows as far away as Japan.

I think one of his 'proudest' claims is that he's actually been bootlegged by Bob Dylan.

One of his photos was selected by Bob - without his permission - for a US tour poster around 2003.  So he phoned Jeff Rosen, Dylan's manager, to see if he could get a payment for the use of his photo. Rosen thought for a minute and then told him 'well, you never had permission to TAKE the photos to begin with!"   So long sucker

Off the deep end?!!!  Me!?  LOL  Ok, I may very well be when it comes to Bob.  But I just hit a meager 58 shows with the Lincoln gig.  I may go nuts when the fall tour is announced depending on what he does.

Please play the east coast Bob!

I love your friend's story.  No dice ehhh?!  lol, Doesn't surprise me.   Blank Frigging Stare

Isn't any member of this board going to see Bob at the Warfield?

Can't we MAKE someone go, Gazza?  really?

xoxoxoxoxo,
Martha

Well I might be the closet Martha. But as I said earlier I'm already going to the Lake Tahoe show. I'm cedrtainly nowhere near the Dylan fan you are. But I can't quite understand the hoopla ove this Warfield show. Yes the Warfield is an absolutely beautiful theatre and a great place to see a show. But Bob has done about 5-6 northern california shows in the last 2 years. Other than the novelty of the ticket selling process and the rumoured special guests(which almost never turns out to happen). I don't get the big deaL.
