From Desolation Row :

No Dylan shows in the UK this summer, but Bob will be appearing at one UK festival. It’s the Hop Farm Festival in Kent, which takes place on July 3rd to 5th. Bob will be appearing on the 3rd. Tickets are not yet on sale. They will cost £125 for the weekend to include parking and camping; last year, day tickets were available at £65 and the event is restricted to 20,000 people.

The Hop Farm????  Oh no! not you again

I believe its even harder to get to than Limerick.

I've been told that there will be no other British Isles shows apart from these two. The Limerick date will be the last show of the tour, which therefore rules out the rumours of a Venice show on July 10th.

That’s probably true! The farm is situated in a small village and used to be owned by the Whitbread Brewery. It’s probably a half-hour drive from where I live, but would be an absolute bugger to get there by public transport. I used to go there occasionally as a child.

I may be wrong, but I think parts of the Darling Buds of May was filmed there.

I was wrong. The Darling Buds of May was filmed in Pluckly, the most haunted village in Kent.

Bob let the kids pass the guitar they made for him up to Stu on the 15th.  That would be worth the price of admission for me.  Wink

Bob Dylan's sayonara tour?
Frank Spignese / Special to The Daily Yomiuri

As a spry 69-year-old Bob Dylan took the stage at Zepp Osaka, anybody with any sense of musical history (and an understanding of mortality) couldn't help but think that this was the beginning of the end. Might this be the opening night of the last Dylan tour to touch Japanese soil? Since first performing in Japan in February 1978, Mr. Zimmerman has only come to the Far East a handful of times (1986, 1994, 1997 and 2001, for those who care). And while his past Japan shows have only blessed the big Budokans and International Forums, this current tour is made up of two weeklong stays at intimate venues Zepp Osaka and Zepp Tokyo.

Dylan could have played the bigger halls, made the same money and been on his way in four days. But these smaller-venue gigs seem to say "thank you" to Japan, with his Osaka opening night feeling almost like an Irish wake. Since '78, Dylan has time and again made an effort to connect with his Japanese fans. While the geisha-loving liner notes of his 1979 Budokan live album now seem embarrassingly hokey, there have been other times when he has lovingly reached out to Japan in his subtly delicate Dylan way.

On his 1986 Japan tour, backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, he covered Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki," soon after the famed singer perished in the tragic crash of JAL Flight 123. In 1994 he debuted an impassioned arrangement of his most visceral protest song, "Masters of War." It was the first time Dylan had played it acoustic since 1963, and the city that he played it in was Hiroshima. Maybe playing these smaller venues is Dylan's way of letting his Japan fans get up and close and personal before saying sayonara.

With a capacity of 2,200, Zepp Osaka felt slightly bigger than a Tokyo live-house and the crowd was packed tight when Dylan took the stage. Dressed in a black suit and black hat, with a bright pink cravat, he looked like Zorro's older, more effeminate brother. Launching into a roadhouse version of "Watching the River Flow," Dylan and band burned through it like they were jamming at a Tennessee chicken shack. Playing keyboard most of the night, Dylan picked up the guitar only once for the second tune, a tenderly reworked "Girl from the North Country." Forty- eight years after he wrote it, this remembrance of a Minnesota girlfriend seemed to resonate with him as much as it did in 1962.

One of the earmarks of any Dylan show is his new arrangements of his songs, often to the point where they aren't immediately recognizable. While this is off-putting to more casual fans, for Dylan nerds this is what makes a Dylan show. The Osaka gig didn't disappoint. "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" was more rocker than ballad, with Dylan playfully hammering the organ like a mischievous schoolboy. "Can't Wait" featured a stop-start motif, exaggerating the reggae strut that the version on Time Out of Mind only hinted at. "Cold Irons Bound" was slowed down to a graveyard dirge that actually managed to make the song's protagonist seem even creepier.

As at most shows at the start of a new Dylan tour, there were few surprises in the set list. Standbys "Highway 61 Revisited" and "All Along the Watchtower" were performed as usual. The former was another barnburner, showcasing the talents of guitarist Charlie Sexton, a veteran of Dylan's stellar 1999-2002 band. But the latter was a rather uninspired outing with none of the guitar pyrotechnics that it usually inspires. The perfunctory "Like a Rolling Stone" was true to the original. Yet Dylan's delivery was less acerbic, almost pitying, a possible sign of a once angry young man now at peace.

Is this Dylan's last Japan tour? Not to sound the death knell, but as the man himself once said "it's not dark yet, but it's getting there."

A few more gaps in the Euro schedule filled in Italy

Latest dates from Bob’s Agents:

June 15th, Padova, Italy
June 16th, Rome but this is likely to change to Siena. Should know within the next few days. The rumoured Viareggio show will not happen.
June 17th, Day off
June 18th, Parma

Siena would be an incredible place to see a gig.

Thank you, Gazza. I’m a little surprised he’s played a relatively small number of UK town and cities, though then again, he’s an American act and wouldn’t have learnt his trade by gigging up and down the British Isles like The Stones et al would have done. The Stones must’ve performed a dozen-or-so dates in Kent circa 1962-65: Sidcup, Folkestone, Margate, Maidstone, Chatham and Rochester, if I recall correctly.
