Bob Dylan & Joan Baez reunite for White House performance
By Alex Young on February 7th, 2010

Former lovers/musical collaborators Bob Dylan and Joan Baez will reunite next Wednesday, February 10th for a performance at the White House. As TwentyFourBit reports, some 47 years after she joined Dylan in Washington, DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (the same even where “I Have a Dream” went down), Baez is now set to join him, along with Smokey Robinson, John Mellencamp, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and others at another Civil Rights Event in the Nation’s Capital, this being the White House-hosted Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement.

In addition to their joint participation in the legendary 1963 March, Dylan and Baez collaborated together numerous occasions, including at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival (hear below) and the famed Rolling Thunder Revue tour in the mid-1970s. Baez is also widely credited for bringing Dylan into national prominence — she recorded several songs and took him on tour — during a time which the two were also romantically involved. Must-See TV  to say the least!!!

The concert will be streamed live on whitehouse.gov and televised on February 11th at 8:00 p.m. ET on public broadcasting stations nationwide.

Oh, I would dress like the current Bob.  He's has the coolest man on earth timeless look.  Girls dig that shit! Smiley

Obama says music fueled civil rights movement
(AP) – 15 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — Crediting civil rights-era protest songs and their spiritual predecessors for his election, President Barack Obama on Tuesday sat in the East Room of his White House and listened to an all-star lineup of performers pay tribute to the music that he said fueled freedom marches and civil disobedience.

The nation's first black president transformed the grand ballroom into a concert hall packed with members of his Cabinet, Congress, civil rights leaders and students for a program that will air on public television later this week for Black History Month. Queen Latifah's rendition of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On" and Yolanda Adams' spirited rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" were early highlights of a night that continued the Obamas' effort to open the White House to America's soundtrack.

"The civil rights movement was a movement sustained by music," Obama said as he welcomed his audience.

He said activists from coast to coast were inspired by spirituals, felt their will sharpened by protest songs and base broadened by artists of hope. He said their work paved the way toward a more just America that allowed him to make history in 2008 with his election.
"Tonight, we celebrate the music of the movement," Obama said.

That celebration was supposed to come on Wednesday, but faced with another major winter storm the White House decided to move the concert ahead by a day to beat what could be a second crippling snowfall in a week. As guests packed the first floor of the executive mansion, heavy snow landed on the South Lawn and blanketed the rest of Washington.

Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez were on the schedule of performers, along with Natalie Cole, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Seal and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
The Howard University Choir and The Freedom Singers performed at a mansion that in its history was maintained by slaves.

Morgan Freeman, who read excerpts from historical works throughout the night, harkened back to the song lyrics Obama invoked during his election-night victory speech in Chicago's Grant Park.

"A long time coming," Freeman said.
He later deadpanned: "I wish I could sing."
Obama said the music helped the movement's faith as their leaders were jailed and their churches bombed.

"It's hard to sing when times are rough," Obama said. "The hymns helped ... advance the cause of the nation."

Tuesday night's concert is just the latest imprint first lady Michelle Obama has left on Washington's social scene. There was a conga line to Earth, Wind and Fire's performance when the Obamas hosted the nation's governors a year ago. Stevie Wonder played a concert in the East Room last year. Marc Anthony took to the South Lawn for an evening of Latin music, and Foo Fighters played the Fourth of July party there.

Mrs. Obama also brought top classical music performers such as Joshua Bell to the White House to work with high school students. That model repeated itself in a pre-concert workshop Tuesday when they heard from Robinson and Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, one of the original Freedom Singers in the 1960s who traveled around the country sharing stories from the civil rights movement. Adams and Toshi Reagon also took up microphones and performed songs from that era.

Obama election should be a point of pride for the students in the regal dining room, Robinson told students.

"We've come a long, long way," said Robinson, who also performed.

The concert was to be televised at 8 p.m. Thursday on public broadcasting stations nationwide as part of the "In Performance at the White House" series. National Public Radio also planned a one-hour concert special from the event to be broadcast nationwide on NPR stations beginning Friday.

Washington has been buried in snow since winter weather began piling onto the region Friday. Some places were already under nearly 3 feet, and another round could dump as much of 20 inches in the Washington region by Wednesday night.

Well I didn't get to see a thing, but have now learned Bob performed with Tony on upright and I don't know who on the piano, The Times They Are A-Changing.  Bob wore a yellow shirt and no hat playing a tattered acoustic guitar. I don't know how to post the shots that are up at expectingrain.  Did anyone catch this performance?

I can't wait to see it. Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed!

Absolutely gorgeous.  I'm teary-eyed trying to imagine it in my mind.  I cannot wait to see it on PBS and they better not cut Bob out.  Thanks Meg!!!! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed!

Oh and then there's this news:

Bob Dylan's first canvas paintings exhibited at London art gallery
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 3 hours ago
LONDON — A London gallery has opened an art show billed as an exclusive exhibition of Bob Dylan's first paintings on canvas.
The show at the Halcyon Gallery, in London's elegant Mayfair district, features a collection of the musician's paintings based on sketches he made while on the road from 1989 to 1992. The exhibits at "Bob Dylan on Canvas" are available for sale - with price tags ranging from 95,000 pounds to 450,000 pounds.
Dylan said in promotional material released Wednesday: "I just draw what's interesting to me, and then I paint it."
He said: "I'm not trying to make social comment or fulfil somebody's vision and I can find subject matter anywhere. I guess in some way that comes out of the folk world that I came up in."

peace n love to all,
Martha

Edit: I stand corrected. Apparently they're worn on the head as well as the arm. Gotta hand it to Uncle Bob - when he jumps into something, he doesn't half-ass it!

G.  I have question for you on the topic of the white face look of 75/76 (and yes Bucky i would go for it too)

I am some-what embarrased to admit that I was reading a short interview with (you'll pardon the  expression) Gene Simmons the other day. In it he claims that Bob said to him that he (Bob) lifted the white face idea directly from Kiss - do you know anything about this??

thanx

Have to say it's the first time I've heard that version, mate!

I dont think he used the white-face thing for that whole '75 tour - from reading Sam Shepard's 'Rolling Thunder Logbook' I got the impression it was some idea that came into his head halfway through. Maybe I'll have to check it out again, along with Ratso Sloman's book of the tour.
