Not sure how many of you are aware of this online radio station, but I just got alerted to it this afternoon :

http://www.dylanradio.com/

100% Bob. Most of the stuff they play is from bootlegs, they take requests and and they also have podcasts of full concerts.

And all free.

It's fecking brilliant.

Yes it is fecking brilliant!! Cool Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

Here's hoping it streams OK from my computer at work

Fecking brilliant, indeed!!!!!!!!!!!! I just tuned in to a live version of "Simple Twist of Fate" that makes me smile broadly while at the same time making me want to cry.

Thank you to whomever posted the link.

What a great read, Gazza, thanks for that.

Don't know about you lot, but I don't think I have ever seen this one:

Holy Christ. He poured his soul out with that version, eh?

The original had only been out a year and apart from the title phrase, every single line has been re-written!

And he says these songs aren't autobiographical?

Quite, Gazza
When I first saw Dylan in 83 in Zurich or Basel, I can't recall, but in the same summer I saw him play with Joan Baez: no doubt, the archivists like yourself or Billy will tell me the exact date, precise setlist, the weather and what you each had for lunch. One of the many concerts I blacked out at, due to a mixture of driving the chiba chariots far too long in the full Summer heat, standing all day in the sun front of stage, drinking beer, etc, all those things I don't do anymore, or at least not at the same time, cause now I know better. Aaaaaanyway, I remember thinking how immobile and inexpressive he was as a performer, not relaxed, as if he couldn't afford giving so much of his true inner self and his soul away in his lyrics AND then also express his feelings physically. For a few years he seemed distant and withdrawn in his performances. A low was Madrid 1986. Which is why it seemed so bloody nice when we saw him together in Manchester last year, you, John, Andrew and me. Our seats were out of this world , thanks to you, and Dylan so relaxed , happy, jiving, obviously in a good place in his mind and in his soul, clearly having a blast. It was an excellent concert. So  yes, I do love him, but not as unconditionally as Martha  Smiley does. But when I grow up I want to love him like that. To be able to actually enjoy listening to his Christmas CD 50 times in a row!

Perverted Mick

Basle was 2nd June 1984. Madrid was '89, I think. So there ya go.

You didnt see him with me, John and Andrew in Manchester - that was Lucinda Williams. You DID see him in Dublin last year with me and John, though. Standing. The seated tickets I got for you and Andrew were for Sheffield. In 2007 as well as last year.  And we all got great seats at Wembley in 2007 (me, you, Ade, John and Erik Snow). Happy to help...LoL

Better seen on weed!

I'm sorry Johanna..

I couldn't get thru one listen  of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" so I guess in my old age I will never love Bob enough to do the 50 times thing with his Xmas CD unless my hearing goes! Wink

Gazza: it always blows my mind how you remember all these facts. Anyway, thank you so much for putting some chronology and factual dates into my very muddled recollections, LOL, although I did recall Erik having at least a dozen neat whiskeys. I'm sure Alzheimer's is just a euphemism for having overloaded your joints when you were younger.... But the feeling of enjoyment of the Sheffield and Wembley shows remains. For now, haha! you made a grown man cry

Meggypoo, don't apologise to me, it's Martha we both have to apologise to...

what age are these children?
When I go to see Bob- I must admit the crowd is 50- 50 over the spectrum of the aging cycle- unlike the Stones

surely you need to do some educator brainwashing here?!!!

sadly- you will probably be wiping my ass......

I am going to guess that I listened to "Christmas In The Heart" at least 100 times, if not more and tho' I am a tad "old" that record just kept getting better with each spin.....Bob's voice is so crackly and I can truly imagine him standing next to me in our tiny church back in New Paris OH during the Christmas Eve service singing his heart out.  It brings tears to my eyes.  I hope he makes another one!

Bob is expected to be on tour in Europe late May into July.

Unconfirmed dates so far include a show in Gothenburg, Sweden on May 28th and (and this is a nice one), St Mark's Square in Venice, Italy on July 10th.

There will be no shows in the UK this year, apparently.   Angry
The Far East tour in March/April now looks like this :

March 12,13,15,16 Osaka, Japan
March 18,19 Nagoya, Japan
March 21,23,24,25,26,29 Tokyo,Japan (& unconfirmed show on March 28th)
April 2 Taipei, Taiwan
April 4 Beijing, China
April 6 Shanghai, China
April 8 Hong Kong

This may be followed by a show in Seoul, South Korea.

Bob has also been nominated for two Grammys. Both nominations are associated with Together Through Life. The nominations plus the competition Bob is up against are:

ROCK FIELD
Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance:
"Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" — Bob Dylan
"Change In The Weather" — John Fogerty
"Dreamer" — Prince
"Working On A Dream" — Bruce Springsteen

AMERICAN ROOTS FIELD (**NEW FIELD**)
Best Americana Album:
Together Through Life — Bob Dylan
Electric Dirt — Levon Helm
Willie And The Wheel — Willie Nelson & Asleep At The Wheel
Wilco (The Album) — Wilco
Little Honey — Lucinda Williams
"Fork In The Road" — Neil Young

You & I have met on six occasions, Jo :

Berlin July '06 - Stones
Manchester Nov'06 - Lucinda Williams (The 'M2' summit)
Wembley April'07 - Dylan
Madrid June '07 - Stones
Manchester March '08 - Neil Young
Dublin May '09 - Dylan

Would have been seven, only you weren't able to make it to London in August '07 for the Stones 02 show you had a ticket for.

You're right about Erik. I've never in my life seen anyone with a capacity to guzzle whisky like that. All of them undiluted!

One of the greatest music videos ever made IMO. Absolutely spell-binding. And one of the greatest songs he ever released as well.

Some very clever bits of editing - such as the bit from the song 'Lenny Bruce' where they quote the line 'I rode with him in a taxi once' and then supplant Lenny Bruce's head onto John Lennon's body in that scene in the back of a cab from 'Eat The Document'.

Bob Dylan to Perform at the White House

"In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement" to be Aired February 11

Event marks the continuation of White House Music Series by celebrating Black History Month

The 2010 White House Music Series begins on Wednesday, February 10th, when the President and First Lady will host "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement" - a concert celebrating Black History month. Participants include Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir and others. Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah will serve as emcees for this concert which will feature songs from the Civil Rights Movement as well as readings from famous Civil Rights speeches and writings. The President will make opening remarks at this concert held in the East Room which will streamed live on http://www.whitehouse.gov starting at 5:15 p.m. ET.

The concert will be televised on February 11th at 8:00 p.m. ET on public broadcasting stations nationwide as part of WETA Washington, D.C.'s "In Performance at the White House" series. NPR will also produce a one-hour concert special from this event for broadcast nationwide on NPR Member stations throughout the month of February, beginning February 12th. The special will be available on http://www.npr.org/music.

As part of this special event, Mrs. Obama will host "Music that Inspired the Movement," a workshop that several of the event's performers will lead for 120 high school students from across the country on Wednesday, February 10th from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. ET. The students will come to learn about the continuing relevance of music from the Civil Rights Movement to today's generation and its original impact in the 1960s. This event will be streamed live on www.whitehouse.gov and students all over the country will be invited to watch and engage in the workshop.

First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the White House Music Series last year with a Jazz Studio, and since then has hosted a celebration of Country Music, a Fiesta Latina and a celebration of Classical Music. Many of these events included evening performances as well as daytime educational workshops designed to educate and inspire talented young people to use their gifts to develop a future for themselves in the arts community whether as a hobby or as a profession.

Great that Dylan is included in this event. Maybe Bob should sing Hurricane Carterfor the sake of black history and social commentary.

He hasnt sung that since 1976 when it was topical..plus its a bit long.

Being a civil rights commemoration, there's quite a few more appropriate songs from around 1963-64 that he could sing instead.

e.g. - The Times They Are A Changin, Only A Pawn In Their Game., The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Oxford Town, even Blowin' In The Wind.

He even sang Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" on a TV special a couple of years ago, so even an appropriate cover version like that would be possible.

Bob Dylan Song Turned Into Children's Book

...

Bob Dylan’s Christianity-inspired album Slow Train Coming contains a slew of quotes from and allusions to the Bible, of course, but the most blatant declaration of Dylan’s then-newfound faith was perhaps in his riffing on Genesis 2:20’s line about Adam “naming livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field” in the song “Man Gave Names To All The Animals.” Sounds like a kids book title to me, and Dylan, as well as Sterling Children’s Books, apparently agrees…

In a press release emailed to us, Sterling and artist Jim Arnosky announced the upcoming release of Man Gave Names to All the Animals, a children’s picture book inspired by Dylan’s lyrics and accompanied by a recording of the original song on CD.

“From the first time I heard it, the lyrics created pictures in my mind of a land of primeval beauty,” Arnosky said. “I thought this vision would make a dream of a book, and I asked for Bob Dylan’s permission to make this dream come true. Happily, he said yes.”

Yeah, it almost seems like Dylan always intended the song to be turned into a kids book with these lyrics (e.g. “He saw an animal leavin’ a muddy trail / Real dirty face and a curly tail. / He wasn’t too small and he wasn’t too big. / Ah, think I’ll call it a pig).
