i just procured a copy of "dusty old fairgrounds"....(meg for president 2012)....where did this song come from? anyone know why it didn't make it to an album?

i have been listening to the studio releases for years...never dawned on me that there could be tons of unreleased gems like this song out there.

New York Town Hall 12 April 1963 - http://www.bjorner.com/DSN00340%201963.htm

One of two shows (the other was Carnegie Hall in October 1963) which were taped for a live album 'Bob Dylan in Concert' (which would have featured 100% new material) but which was eventually scrapped in favour of 'The Times They Are A Changin'). An acetate of the live album was later bootlegged and various songs from it have popped up officially over the last couple of decades.

I dont think he even bothered recording a studio version of that song. By the time he was cutting his next album just 4 months later, he'd already moved on from it.

If you check out that link, you'll get an idea of how prolific he was back then. When you even look at 'Bootleg Series Volume 1", the first disc alone and the first three on disc 2 (25 songs in all) cover a period of about 22 months - and there are shitloads of publishing demos, home tapes and early concerts in that 1962-64 period in circulation as well. Most of 'em in great quality too.

There was a reason why I sent you that show, Bucky!
He debuted "You've Been Hiding Too Long", Ramblin Down thru the World", "Who Kllled Davey Moore ", and this song-"Dusty Old Fairgrounds"...never to be played or recorded in the studio again.  Supposedly "dusty fairgrounds" was a last minute whim and and outlandish account of his youth or maybe just another tall tale...

Must be nice to be able to write so many songs and forget about them

Damn - no 'Frosty the Snowman' after all. Might not be as great as I imagined, then.

Ah well, I suppose we'll have to keep our fingers crossed for a Bootleg Series edition with all the outtakes.... Tongue

Ok, I need to know WHO he recorded with.  His Band?

Bob will make this LP SWING, that I know.  It will be great.  Truly.  If you don't like Christmas/holiday music though it won't work for ya.

Me, I'm all jingle-belled UP!   Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed! Better seen on weed!

I heard that it was done acoustically, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

I have no problem with Christmas music. I just am a bit underwhelmed - despite the fact that it's for a nice cause - at the prospect of the greatest songwriter and recording artist in history wasting his time singing Christmas carols, probably because in terms of singing technique, he ain't exactly Elvis.

LOL  Ok then.

I got my RS mag in yesterday's mail and there's a review of sorts on pg. 18, which I cannot find on their frickin' webpage AT ALL. Grrrr...  So I'll type in this much about what they have to say about Bob's new LP:

"Dylan recorded the set earlier this year with his touring band, session players and a group of backup singers. (The artist produced himself under his usual pseudonym, Jack Frost.)"

It WILL swing!!!!

Well then, you'll be able to eat your Xmas dinner!  LOL

Did you make out the call I made from the Allman gig at Red Rocks last night?  They did Van the Man's Into the Mystic, and I thought of YOU!  GREAT show!

Oh, back to Bob.....what if anything is being said about Theme Time Radio Hour returning for a 4th season?  Season 3 started in early Roctober last year......which is right around the corner.  If the money idiots at XM/Sirius DO NOT have him back, I give up entirely on the music industry.  Bob's show is a priceless gem.  What's the latest?

I figured it was YOU, as not too many people in the US would have my number and it was at 5 am my time! I was bewildered as to who it was though, as I know Bruce and Dylan aren't on the road at the minute - couldnt really make it out, unfortunately, but thanks for the gesture.

Have heard nothing about another TTRH. I'm getting the impression it's finished, but I'm not sure. If it is, it'll have been because Dylan doesn't want to keep doing it I would imagine. I'm sure Sirius and XM would be keen to have it back.

Do you think they are keen?  I'm not so sure about that.  I get their update thingys in my email and Bob's show is not mentioned or included.  That seems odd to me.

Well, its not going to be mentioned if he hasnt committed (yet) to doing it again - simple as that.

I would imagine its a huge coup for them - this show is syndicated worldwide dont forget. If they didnt pick it up, other stations would be queueing up to take it.

Its been a massive success story.

I realize that, I mean it isn't included along with the other shows they highlight and advertise when they send those email announcements out every two weeks or month.

I hope it never goes away until Bob is done with it.  He SAID he'd never run outta themes....!

Maybe we'll get some news on this soon then. Wink
