Conrad Bain of 'Diff'rent Strokes' dead at 89
Jan. 16, 2013, 12:59 PM EST

NEW YORK (AP) -- Conrad Bain, a veteran stage and film actor who became a star in middle age as the kindly white adoptive father of two young African-American brothers in the TV sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes," has died.

Bain died Monday of natural causes in his hometown of Livermore, Calif., according to his daughter, Jennifer Bain. He was 89.

Bing: More on Conrad Bain

The show that made him famous debuted on NBC in 1978, an era when television comedies tackled relevant social issues. "Diff'rent Strokes" touched on serious themes but was known better as a family comedy that drew most of its laughs from its standout child actor, Gary Coleman.

Bain played wealthy Manhattan widower Philip Drummond, who promised his dying housekeeper he would raise her sons, played by Coleman and Todd Bridges. Race and class relations became topics on the show as much as the typical trials of growing up.

Coleman, with his sparkling eyes and perfect comic timing, became an immediate star, and Bain, with his long training as a theater actor, proved an ideal straight man. The series lasted six seasons on NBC and two on ABC.

In the show's heyday, Bain didn't mind being overshadowed by the focus on the show's children. He praised Coleman and Bridges as natural talents without egos.

But "Diff'rent Strokes" is remembered mostly for its child stars' adult troubles.

Coleman, who died in 2010, had financial and legal problems in addition to continuing ill health from the kidney disease that stunted his growth and required transplants. Bridges and Dana Plato, who played Bain's teenage daughter, both had arrest records and drug problems, and Plato died of an overdose in 1999 at age 34.

Bain said in interviews later that he struggled to talk about his TV children's troubled lives because of his love for them. After Bridges started to put his drug troubles behind him in the early 1990s, he told Jet magazine that Bain had become like a real father to him.

Also: Show your respects on Facebook

Bain went directly into "Diff'rent Strokes" from another comedy, "Maude," which aired on CBS from 1972 to 1978.

As Dr. Arthur Harmon, the conservative neighbor often zinged by Bea Arthur's liberal feminist, Bain became so convincing as a doctor that a woman once stopped him in an airport seeking medical advice.

At a nostalgia gathering in 1999, he lamented the fading of situation comedies that he said were about something.

"I think they got off the track when they first hired a standup comic to do the lead," he said. "Instead of people creating real situations, you get people trying to act funny."

Before those television roles, Bain had appeared occasionally in films, including "A Lovely Way to Die," ''Coogan's Bluff," ''The Anderson Tapes," ''I Never Sang for My Father" and Woody Allen's "Bananas." He also played the clerk at the Collinsport Inn in the 1960s television show "Dark Shadows."

A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, Bain arrived in New York in 1948 after serving in the Canadian army during World War II. He was still studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts when he acquired his first role on television's "Studio One."

A quick study who could play anything from Shakespeare to O'Neill, he found work in stock companies in the United States and the Bahamas, making his New York debut in 1956 as Larry Slade in "The Iceman Cometh" at the Circle in the Square.

With his plain looks and down-to-earth manner, he was always cast as a character actor.

It was an audition for a role in the 1971 film "Cold Turkey" that led Bain to TV stardom. He didn't get the part but "Cold Turkey" director Norman Lear remembered him when he created "Maude."

Conrad Stafford Bain attended high school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, deciding on his life's work after an appearance as the stage manager in a high school production of "Our Town."

He married artist Monica Sloan in 1945. She died in 2009. He is survived by three children: Jennifer, Kent and Mark

Christine Baranski Would Like to Be Keith Richards in Her Next Life, Minus All the Drugs

By Bennett Marcus
1:34 PM, January 16 2013

...
Lily Cowles, Joshua Bell, and Christine Baranski By Sylvain Gaboury/PatrickMcmullan.com

Tommy and Dee Hilfiger must really be keeping up their fitness regimen—the two opted to take the stairs up to Joshua Bell’s eighth-floor loft on Tuesday after a long wait for the building’s finicky elevator.

They didn’t seem winded once upstairs (your VF Daily correspondent waited for the lift)—we found them happily munching hors d’oeuvres and chatting with partygoers in the kitchen of the three-story penthouse.

Violinist Bell hosted the party to benefit Education Through Music, a charitable organization that brings music programs to schools, and the event’s host committee included a string of powerful Hollywood types, such as Harvey Weinstein and Meryl Streep. “The funny thing is, I know a lot of them,” he said. Bell met Streep working on the movie Music of the Heart back in 1999. “Meryl unfortunately couldn’t come [tonight] because she’s sick, so I’m very disappointed.”

This year, the song Bell performed with Scarlett Johansson for Chasing Ice has been nominated for an Oscar. He doesn’t know yet whether they’ll perform the piece at the ceremony, but he’s an old hand. “It happened for me with a film many years ago called The Red Violin—the soundtrack for that won the Oscar, which I played,” he told VF Daily. “It’s always fun to be connected to something like that.”

The highlight of the intimate party was Bell’s violin performance, with the accompaniment of pianist Sam Haywood, who flew in from London especially for the evening.

Despite Streep’s absence, the place was swarming with boldface names, including Ralph and Ricky Lauren and their son David and daughter-in-law Lauren Bush, Gayle King, and Kyle MacLachlan and Desiree Gruber.

A few discussed their musical prowess, or lack thereof. Mary-Louise Parker played piano as a kid, and she’s planning to take lessons again soon. “I know I’m old, but I’m going to do it,” she told VF Daily. She already started lessons once but stopped because she was living with a musician and felt embarrassed. But there is another musician in the Parker household. “My son just learned how to play the recorder, which is highly annoying,” she said.

As a child, Julianna Margulies played the flute for nine years and was in her school orchestra. She’s given up the flute but still plays guitar. “My husband is quite a good guitarist, and I’ll play rhythm to his,” she said. “I’m not that good, but I can strum a song.” So they just break out the guitars for sing-alongs? “We do!” Margulies said, laughing. “We got our kid a little guitar, and we have fun. As long as no one’s listening.”

Her Good Wife co-star Christine Baranski, an accomplished singer, never learned to play an instrument. “I wanted to play the cello, and my mother said it was unladylike,” Baranski said. “And then I said I wanted to play the piano, and she said it was too expensive, we didn’t have room in our house, so I went to ballet lessons.”

More recently, the desire to be a rock star has sprouted. “Two words: Mamma Mia,” the 60-year-old Baranski said, singing us a bit of “Dancing Queen” (“You can dance . . . ”). The Julliard-trained actress now thinks that being a pop star would be the greatest. “Oh, in my next life, that’s the way to go,” she said. “Oh yeah, there’s nothing like being a rock star! I want to be a male—I want to be Keith Richards. Without the wear and tear, and the toxicity. A pH-balanced Keith Richards.”

Frank Zappa score joins The Rest is Noise classical festival

By Tim Masters
Entertainment and arts correspondent, BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21061287

...

A controversial orchestral film score by music legend Frank Zappa is to have its UK premiere as part of a major celebration of modern classical music.

Zappa's 200 Motels will be performed this autumn as part of the Southbank Centre's ambitious The Rest is Noise festival.

A planned performance of the work at the Albert Hall in 1971 was pulled on the grounds of obscenity.

The experience soured Zappa's relationship with classical music.

Announcing the highlights of the second half of the festival on Thursday, Jude Kelly, the Southbank Centre's artistic director, said the 200 Motels premiere had come about after lengthy negotiations with Zappa's estate.

Jude Kelly

Artistic director, Southbank Centre

"His widow Gail has been reluctant to allow it to happen unless it could be done in the manner he would have wanted, so it's taken us literally years to get to this stage," she said.

American musician Zappa, who made more than 60 albums in a career spanning more than three decades, died in 1993.

200 Motels is the orchestral score for the 1971 musical surrealist film co-written and directed by Zappa and Tony Palmer.

Involving an orchestral ensemble of more than 65 musicians and a chorus of 30, the piece will be performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and members of Southbank Sinfonia with conductor Jurjen Hempel on 29 October.

Kelly said: "Zappa was always very inspired and influenced by classical music. His 200 Motels calls on enormous orchestral forces. It was supposed to premiere at the Albert Hall and then it was pulled because it was thought to be unseemly. As a result he turned his back on classical music."

Inspired by the 2007 book of the same name by music critic Alex Ross, The Rest is Noise Festival is a year-long exploration of 20th Century classical music.

It launches this weekend with Richard Strauss's 1905’ opera “Salome and will close in December with John Adams's nativity oratorio from the year 2000, El Nino.

Over the year, the festival will examine how social and political changes of the last century helped shape classical music. As well as concerts there will be film screenings, talks, debates and exhibitions.

A month-long season in 2014 will mark the restoration of the Royal Festival Hall organ
"This is literally like a historical course," said Kelly. "Audiences can walk through the classical music of the 20th Century in chronological order."

She said such an approach is rare because most concert programmes are put together around one composer's work, or their relevance to another composer.

From September to December The Rest is Noise will focus on the post-war period from 1945 to 2000.

Jude Kelly: "It seems obvious to say but the terror of the Holocaust and the realisation of what Stalin had done meant that composers turned away from anything too romantic and lyrical because they felt that wouldn't represent what the world had shown us. It changed the nature of what they were writing."

Three concerts will be dedicated to English composer Benjamin Britten's centenary with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vladimir Jurowski presenting opera Peter Grimes, War Requiem and rarely-performed orchestral music.

There will also be rare London performances by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; and the screening of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey with live accompaniment by the Royal Festival Hall's resident Philharmonia Orchestra.

Elsewhere, the Southbank Centre's 2013/14 season includes the London Philharmonic Orchestra's premiere of Gorecki's Fourth Symphony, the last work of the Polish composer who died in 2010.

The San Francisco Symphony returns to Southbank Centre for the first time in 19 years conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, while Antonio Pappano will return for the first time since 1998 conducting Rome-based Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia.

Eight new works have been commissioned to celebrate the return of the Southbank Centre's fully-restored Royal Festival Hall organ which made its debut there in 1954.

The Pull Out All The Stops Festival - from 18 March to 13 April 2014 - includes new works by John Tavener, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy, and Turner Prize-winning artist and musician Martin Creed.

Voo  .............. you are much loved by The Joey  .

Keith " Dear Boy "  Moon just left me a voice message  . He ( Moonie ) is in town and wants to go out drinking tonight .............. me " Liver Warning Light " just went on and me Kindeys are now ' quivering '    . When I drank with Keith last weekend he ( Moonie ) mentioned that the Rolling Stones will indeed be touring throughout the states in 2013  ( look for numerous gigs in NYC  [ both Barclays & MSG  ]  , Chicago [ No More Soldier Field Snowstorms  --- preferably the United Centre  ]   , L.A. [ Staples ] and a few in the smaller markets  [ Kansas City is a lock as the band has not performed there since 1999  ] )   ........ not to mention the booming Emerging Markets of South America  / Australia / New Zealand and Asia  ( North Korea's Kim Jong Un LOVES the Rolling Stones so look for numerous gigs in Pyongyang  / Seoul  )    .  Europe might be delayed until 2014 or 2015 depending upon just how many countries file for bankruptcy in the coming months  Sad

Please say prayer ..........  Moonie loves his High Octane   :

" Brewers Whim #1 Middle Earth, American Barleywine
Available at both locations. MiddleEarth American style Barleywine revives an English farmhouse brewery practice of making very elaborate, high ABV ales to set aside for special occasions. Our version, while painstaking and time-consuming to brew, rewards the connoisseur with the depth and complexity of a good brandy or single malt scotch. Middle-Earth Barleywine has an aroma dominated by a blend of hops but includes distinctive notes of plums, dates, and malted barley. This wonderful bouquet is complemented by a deep copper color with tinges of orange and its full-bodied, rich malty flavor. Massive quantities of malt and hops, an extended aging period and limited availability make this special beer worthy trying. But beware; this ale packs a punch - having an alcohol content of 9.1%, our barleywine is served in a 10 oz. glass. (9.1% ABV, 50 IBU's)  "
