As long as there was a live possibility of crushing Germany , obtaining a Russian zone of occupation
in that country , and supplanting German influence in Eastern and Central Europe  , all of
which required the British and the Americans to attack Germany in the west  ,  Stalin
would stay with the Allies  , but not if he concluded that they were merely promoting
the Russo - German War and not really trying to defeat Germany themselves .

Churchill , though capable of rascality , and often enjoying a ruse , was quintessentially a man of principle -- a rebel within the British upper classes , but a subscriber to the rules of the British Public School , the British Army and Royal Navy , the London Clubs , and above all , Parliament  , where he had sat for forty - three years  . Stalin did not care about anyone or anything except seizing all the territories his armies could reach
where the British and the Americans had not preceded him .  The Russian Bear  , confined for centuries , saw its cage door open and was lumbering into Central Europe .

Indeed , their mutual admiration was striking  -- they seem to have been virtually oblivious of each other's evils ) . "

At the border between political and military strategy , Franklin Roosevelt's acute intuition was his sure guide . It enabled him to judge how long Stalin could be left to take 90 percent of the casualties  ,   as among the Big Three   ,  before he might be tempted to compose his differences with Hitler , as he had done in 1939 ; and how long the British and Americans could operate on the periphery of the main theatre before moving to assure that most of geopolitically useful Europe was in their hands and not Russia's . The management of relations with Stalin and Churchill in these matters , apart from the purely military elements , required almost preternatural insight and finesse .
