Two amazing shows, to put it mildly. Was a bit too late for the pit in Milan but we were against the fence just behind it which was in some ways more comfortable. In Paris we were 2 or 3 from the rail on the side of the stage..Bruce came down very close to us a few times.
Tried to call a few people from the shows, but was having some problems with the cellphone, so apologies to some folks if you didnt get a text or a call.
Was nice to get so many changes in Paris, I think it was about 8-9 songs which is quite a lot for two one-night stands about 400 miles apart. He must have played about 3-4 fan requests at each show. A funny moment in Paris when he held up a sign (given by a fan as a request) to the band for "Fire" and they then started playing "I'm On Fire" before he stopped them and said "No, Not 'I'm on Fire' - FIRE!". The highlight for me of the two shows was probably the version of "For You" from Paris which was played solo at the piano. Absolutely stunning.
The sound bounced around a bit at times in both venues, especially Milan, but it wasnt much of a problem. This was the first time I'd seen him overseas and the Italian crowds are everything they're made out to be. They get there early, and they're up on their feet throughout. The enthusiasm is evidently mutual. The San Siro concert had an 11.30 curfew and just before curfew time (remember that Bruce was fined £80,000 in London for exceeding a curfew by four minutes), just when we were expecting the final song "American Land", he threw in "Bobby Jean" as an audible, followed it with "American Land" and then added a lengthy "Twist & Shout" for good measure before calling it a night at 11.50. Three hours exactly and 29 songs - the longest show of the tour - incredible energy in 90 degree heat for a man just three months shy of his 59th birthday. I thought Milan shaded Paris in terms of greatness and of the 6 shows I've seen this tour would be up there with the 3rd night in Dublin for the honour of best gig I've seen all tour.
