Here is another one fron the NY Times:

The Power of the Particular
By DAVID BROOKS
Published: June 25, 2012 249 Comments

They say you’ve never really seen a Bruce Springsteen concert until you’ve seen one in Europe, so some friends and I threw financial sanity to the winds and went to follow him around Spain and France. In Madrid, for example, we were rewarded with a show that lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes, possibly the longest Springsteen concert on record and one of the best. But what really fascinated me were the crowds.

Springsteen crowds in the U.S. are hitting their AARP years, or deep into them. In Europe, the fans are much younger. The passion among the American devotees is frenzied, bordering on cultish. The intensity of the European audiences is two standard deviations higher. The Europeans produce an outpouring of noise and movement that sometimes overshadows what’s happening onstage.

Here were audiences in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula singing word for word about Highway 9 or Greasy Lake or some other exotic locale on the Jersey Shore. They held up signs requesting songs from the deepest and most distinctly American recesses of Springsteen’s repertoire.

The oddest moment came midconcert when I looked across the football stadium and saw 56,000 enraptured Spaniards, pumping their fists in the air in fervent unison and bellowing at the top of their lungs, “I was born in the U.S.A.! I was born in the U.S.A.!”

Did it occur to them at that moment that, in fact, they were not born in the U.S.A.? How was it that so many people in such a faraway place can be so personally committed to the deindustrializing landscape from New Jersey to Nebraska, the world Springsteen sings about? How is it they can be so enraptured at the mere mention of the Meadowlands or the Stone Pony, an Asbury Park, N.J., nightclub?

My best theory is this: When we are children, we invent these detailed imaginary worlds that the child psychologists call “paracosms.” These landscapes, sometimes complete with imaginary beasts, heroes and laws, help us orient ourselves in reality. They are structured mental communities that help us understand the wider world.

We carry this need for paracosms into adulthood. It’s a paradox that the artists who have the widest global purchase are also the ones who have created the most local and distinctive story landscapes. Millions of people around the world are ferociously attached to Tupac Shakur’s version of Compton or J.K. Rowling’s version of a British boarding school or Downton Abbey’s or Brideshead Revisited’s version of an Edwardian estate.

Millions of people know the contours of these remote landscapes, their typical characters, story lines, corruptions and challenges. If you build a passionate and highly localized moral landscape, people will come.

Over the years, Springsteen built his own paracosm, with its own collection of tramps, factory closings, tortured Catholic overtones and moments of rapturous escape. This construction project took an act of commitment.

The most interesting moment of Springsteen’s career came after the success of “Born to Run.” It would have been natural to build on that album’s success, to repeat its lush, wall-of-sound style, to build outward from his New Jersey base and broaden his appeal. Instead, Springsteen went deeper into his roots and created “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” which is more localized, more lonely and more spare.

That must have seemed like a commercially insane decision at the time. But a more easily accessible Springsteen, removed from his soul roots, his childhood obsessions and the oft-repeated idiom of cars and highways, would have been diluted. Instead, he processed new issues in the language of his old tradition, and now you’ve got young adults filling stadiums, knowing every word to songs written 20 years before they were born, about places they’ll never see.

It makes you appreciate the tremendous power of particularity. If your identity is formed by hard boundaries, if you come from a specific place, if you embody a distinct musical tradition, if your concerns are expressed through a specific paracosm, you are going to have more depth and definition than you are if you grew up in the far-flung networks of pluralism and eclecticism, surfing from one spot to the next, sampling one style then the next, your identity formed by soft boundaries, or none at all.

(Maybe this is why younger rock bands can’t fill stadiums year after year, while the more geographically defined older bands like U2, Springsteen and the Beach Boys can.)

The whole experience makes me want to pull aside politicians and business leaders and maybe everyone else and offer some pious advice: Don’t try to be everyman. Don’t pretend you’re a member of every community you visit. Don’t try to be citizens of some artificial globalized community. Go deeper into your own tradition. Call more upon the geography of your own past. Be distinct and credible. People will come.

Just a couple of hundred yards from where they stopped him singing on the Apple rooftop all those years ago!

Fucking imbeciles. 10 minutes over curfew, in the middle of the closing '10th avenue freeze out' and they pull the plug.

Welcome to the city that will be the centre of the world's attention in two weeks time. No outdoor music on a Saturday night after 10.30! It's like North Korea for fucks sake.

Hope none of those Olympic events run a few minutes late!

" Paul McCartney plays two songs with Bruce Springsteen at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in London on Saturday "

" Nice! Of all the special guests who have joined Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band over the years, this may be the most special one.

Sir Paul McCartney joined in for "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist and Shout," the final two songs of Springsteen's 29-song set, 3:13 headlining set at the Hard Rock Calllng Festival in London's Hyde Park on Saturday.

Some tweets says the sound was cut off during the final song, since Bruce went over curfew.

Saturday's show also featured the Wrecking Ball Tour premiere of "Take 'Em As They Come," a rarely played gem from The River period which is on the "Tracks" box set.

Bruce has only performed the song nine times before, the last being on June 14, 2003 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

John Fogerty and Tom Morello also joined Bruce. Fogerty played on "The Promised Land" and Morello, as he has a few times already this tour, joined in on three different songs.

Earlier in the day, Bruce joined Fogerty during his set on "Rockin' All Over The World."

The show opened with just Bruce and Roy Bittan performing "Thunder Road," that's something I would like to see.

Set list:
1. Thunder Road (Bruce & Roy)
2. Badlands
3. We Take Care of Our Own
4. Wrecking Ball
5. Death to My Hometown (with Tom Morello)
6. My City of Ruins
7. Spirit In The Night
8. The Promised Land (with John Forgerty)
9. Take 'Em As They Come (tour premiere, sign request)
10. Jack of All Trades (with Tom Morello)
11. Empty Sky (solo acoustic)
12. Because the Night
13. Johnny 99
14. Darlington County
15. Workin' on the Highway
16. Shackled & Drawn
17. Waitin' on a Sunny Day
18. Raise Your Hand
19. The River
20. The Ghost of Tom Joad (with Tom Morello)
21. The Rising
22. Land of Hope & Dreams

Encores:
23. We Are Alive
24. Born in the USA
25. Born To Run
26. Glory Days
27. Dancing in the Dark
28. I Saw Her Standing There (with Paul McCartney, tour premiere)
29. Twist and Shout (with Paul McCartney)

Show over at 10:41 p.m.

Next show: Tuesday, the first of back-to-back nights at the RDS Arena in Dublin, Ireland.  "

I saw this on the entertainment news, what a complete asshole move by the British police! Did they have a clue what was going on? Totally ridiculous, absolutely senseless. Isnt Hyde Park in an area of hotels and businesses, not in a residential neighborhood? I remembervisiting Hyde Park and thinking concert noise wouldt bother too many people there, thinking The Stones might return there again someday. This makes me upset!

Westminster council apparently were responsible. There's always very strict 10.30 pm curfews for outdoor shows in London (Stones shows at Wembley and Twickenham have always been subject to them).

You're right about the area - its mostly hotels and businesses, mixed in with million pound apartments in and around Mayfair.

I remember when the Stones played Twickenham in 2006 and the show started about ten minutes behind schedule as the stage had to have puddles swept off it following a last minute downpour. The Stones got around the problem of risking a fine (which would have been all of about £5,000 (!!)) by skipping a song and cutting the show down from 20 songs to 19 so that they could finish by 10.30.

They felt so good about how it went that they kept it at 19 for the remaining six shows of the tour!  Angry

The Westminster Council is saying that the Festival organizers pulled the plug. Sticking to their license for the event...Meanwhile here's a combination of Steve Van Zandt tweets after the show:
One of the great gigs ever in my opinion. But seriously, when did England become a police state? We break curfews in every country but only English cops needs to "punish us" by not letting us leave until the entire crowd goes. Is there just too much fun in the world? We would have been off by 11 if we'd done one more. On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing? The cops got nothing more important to do? How about they go catch some criminals instead of fucking with 80,000 people having a good time? English cops may be the only individuals left on earth that wouldn't want to hear one more from Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney! I'm sorry but I have to be honest I'm pissed. Like I said, it didn't ruin the great night. But when I'm jamming with McCartney don't bug me! If it's a public transport issue I'm sorry but people are adult enough to go get a train if they need to without the cops pulling the plug!"

He later backed off, saying how wonderful Live Nation is and how Boris Johnson is a cool dude. Think the boss got to him? Oh no! not you again

I'd believe that. Probably crapping themselves that it might affect their license applications for future festivals.  I seriously doubt 15-20 minutes would have affected it, though - besides, they're probably not going to have too many headline acts who elect to play for LONGER than they're contractually obliged to.

Why do I sense a 5 hour show in Dublin tonight?
Bruce Springsteen's guitarist Steve Van Zandt has said that fans should "bet on it" that the music legend and the E Street Band's show will overrun at Dublin's RDS tonight, Tuesday July 17.

Why do I sense a 5 hour show in Dublin tonight?
Bruce Springsteen's guitarist Steve Van Zandt has said that fans should "bet on it" that the music legend and the E Street Band's show will overrun at Dublin's RDS tonight, Tuesday July 17.

It didn't! The curfew (as far as I'm aware) is 11 pm in Dublin. They were comfortably within it despite playing up to the curfew-breaking jokes all evening. At one point near the end, they had a couple of guys dressed up as London cops coming onstage, switching off the huge power sign prop they'd had on stage all evening and wrestling Bruce and Steve to the ground as they tried to 'arrest' them.

First show was extremely good. Would give it an 8 out of 10. Excellent for a 'first' night. Patti was back in the band for the two Dublin shows (her only other Euro shows since were Barcelona '08 and the Paris ones earlier this month, I think). Her AND Soozie both lost their footing at different points of the show, though ("I told her not to wear high heels onstage" said Bruce). Only downside for me was the sound. It was way too low for much of the gig and quite muddy for the first hour or so. Even though I was at the back part of the pit (as I was both nights).

Second night was just off the scale brilliant, however. Probably in my top six of the 32 Bruce shows I've seen since 1981.
32-song set, lasting 3 hours 20 minutes (finishing a minute or two after curfew!) and SIXTEEN changes from the night before. The sound just pretty much as it should be, and a setlist for the ages.

This Hard Land (solo acoustic)
No Surrender
Two Hearts
The Ties That Bind
We Take Care of Our Own
Badlands
Something in the Night
Adam Raised a Cain
Wrecking Ball
Death to My Hometown
My City of Ruins
Spirit in the Night
Jackson Cage
She's the One
Jack of All Trades
Atlantic City
Because the Night
Darlington County
Easy Money
Waitin on a Sunny Day
The Promise (solo piano)
The River
Backstreets
Land of Hope and Dreams
* * *
Born in the U.S.A.
Born to Run
Glory Days
Seven Nights to Rock
Dancing in the Dark
Tenth Avenue Freeze-out
Rocky Ground
American Land

From Backstreets : Also changing from Night One was Jake Clemons' physical condition, as he was brought on stage in a wheelchair and carried to a stool on the horn riser.  Bruce explained to the crowd that Jake's back had gone out while sneezing last night.  Although unable to move around the stage and clearly dealing with some pain, Jake belted out his solos just fine, and even managed to stand for the "Born to Run" solo. Bruce even had some fun with the situation during "Spirit in the Night," with Jake unable to come to the front of the stage to do their usual bit. Throwing in some lyric changes — "Crazy Jakey got really hurt" — Bruce sang the last verse sitting on a stool next to Jake in solidarity.

...

Some real bucket-list songs for me last night which made it even more special. Four of my all time favourites, which rarely get played - 'This Hard Land' to open, 'The Promise' solo on piano (which I got in Manchester as well), 'Something In The Night' (first time for me) and my personal highlight, 'Backstreets' for only my second time ever (the last was in 1988!)

Utterly amazing couple of days. Even the much-feared and forecast rainstorms didnt happen. My last shows for this year unfortunately, but I believe its looking good for a return visit to Europe in 2013.
