Bruce Springsteen at SXSW: The Boss invites every person he's ever met on stage at epic three-hour show

by Kyle Anderson

There weren’t any great revelations that emerged from Bruce Springsteen’s Thursday afternoon keynote address at the music portion of the South by Southwest Festival. The Boss didn’t have a whole lot of clear ideas to impart, and even he agreed with that estimate (“I gave a big speech this morning, f—ed the whole thing up,” he joked from the stage later).
Mostly, he just got across the idea that he loves rock music, and that it still holds some sort of undefinable power — and later that night he got the chance to prove it where it counts: on stage, in an epic three-hour set at Moody’s Theater in Austin.
The big headlines will probably belong to Springsteen’s giant list of collaborators, which ranged from Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who sat in on a trio of tunes, including a raucous, metaled-up version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” that split the difference between Springsteen’s acoustic original and Rage’s aggro cover, to Jimmy Cliff, who came out to do a mini set of his own during the encore, including an effervescent “The Harder They Come.”
The Animals’ Eric Burdon also stopped by to blast through “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” (according to Springsteen, he happened to realize Burdon was in town thanks to Twitter, and noted that he has stolen from him more than anyone else in his career), and the night closed with an overwhelming spin through Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” featuring Morello, Burdon, Joe Ely, Alejandro Escovedo (who also opened the show), and members of Arcade Fire.
GET MORE EW: Subscribe to the magazine for only 33¢ an issue!
Of the guest spots, Cliff won the crowd over easily, but the MVP award probably goes to Morello. He struggled a bit in the beginning, but he delivered the musical highlight of the night with an incredible six-string pyrotechnical display during the breakdown of “The Ghost of Tom Joad.” He busted out the old DJ-guitar schtick (like the solo in “Bulls On Parade”) but also tore through a hot series of licks that made him sound like the bastard son of Slash and Steve Vai. Springsteen could do little else but look on in awe, amazed at the talent and ingenuity joining him on this special night.
But for all those guest stars, legends, and re-imagined covers, the real story of the night lay within Springsteen’s own songs, played with his own band. Reactions to his latest album Wrecking Ball have been mixed, and it’s easy to hear why: It’s an album that puts pomp ahead of songcraft, melody, or lyrics. Sonically, every song strains to be a revelatory anthem, which can make Wrecking Ball sound both forced and exhausting.
It turns out, though, that those songs sound way better when given the room to shift and twist in a live setting. Springsteen is nothing if not a master of dynamics—how else would he able to go for three hours night after night? So while the studio version of “We Take Care of Our Own” and “Jack of All Trades” veer dangerously into self-parody, the live versions are far better balanced and allow the highlights to really burst out (the beautifully simple central melody of the former, the cutting narrative of the latter).
It doesn’t quite work with every song: Though “Rocky Ground” has a lovely refrain, that rap interlude still sounds pretty goofy, and the best case scenario for “We Are Alive” is still that it reminds you of how good a song “Ring of Fire” is. But the breathing room largely made Wrecking Ball sound more in tune with Bruce’s best-executed stuff, and the title track stood up especially well under the live lights—expect the line “Bring on your wrecking ball” to inspire the same sort of crowd outbursts that follow Bruce’s most classic lines.
Springsteen began his night in hushed reverie mode, with a rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “I Ain’t Got No Home.” It started as an a cappella hymn, then slowly built into an all-hands-on-deck climax that easily segued into “We Take Care of Our Own” (which seems like it could open Springsteen shows for years to come). There were plenty of classics in the mix (“Badlands,” “Thunder Road” et al), but Bruce rarely strayed from his new material (except when a fellow legend happened to be on the microphone next to him).
Actually, the stone-cold hits may have been the weakest link of the evening. “Thunder Road” remains an astonishing accomplishment, but it’s also pretty old, and the performance of it hasn’t shifted all that much in a few decades. The rendition on Thursday night was pitch perfect—perhaps even too perfect, as though Bruce mastered all the tricks long ago and there are no surprises left. Those moments can make Springsteen feel like a nostalgia act rather than a restless forward-thinker.
The biggest climaxes of the evening came during the numerous tributes to late E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons. The upcoming tour for Wrecking Ball will the the first ever with the Big Man’s sax stylings, and it’s clear that the group misses him dearly. Springsteen took every opportunity to give him a shout-out and call attention to his greatness, reminding everyone during the band roll call that though both Clemons and multi-instrumentalist Danny Federici were missing in action, “If you’re here, and we’re here, then they’re here.”
He often handed the center of the stage to Clemons’ nephew and new E Street sax man Jake Clemons, turning each solo into a robust sonic exorcism. When the time came to invoke Clemons in the lyrics to “10th Avenue Freeze-Out,” the entire group paused and pointed upwards, inspiring a lengthy and loud ovation.
Strangely, for a show so overrun with names from the ’70s and late icons (Guthrie’s name was invoked multiple times as well), Thursday night’s show didn’t feel like a tribute to the best days gone by. Like all of his folk-music heroes, Springsteen only gets more restless as he ages, and his insatiable thirst for new things sometimes gets the best of him but often yields exceptional results.
Thursday night’s show wasn’t perfect—Bruce definitely lost the crowd once or twice, and the new material doesn’t sound as comfortably broken in as even the songs from The Rising. But he is willing to experiment, and he knows that failure always provides a new lesson to learn. After four decades, Springsteen still has the ability to surprise us—precisely because he is still able to surprise himself.

REVIEW from 'Backstreets'

MEET ME AT THE WRECKING BALL
Jimmy Cliff, Eric Burdon, Tom Morello and more join in for SXSW blowout

By GARY GRAFF / AUSTIN, TX
As he finished the main part of his South By Southwest concert Thursday night in Austin's ACL Live at Moody Theater, Bruce Springsteen thanked the 2,700 or so who packed the place "for being part of our test run."

That was a funny way to refer to a show that immediately took on the rank of legendary in Springsteen's already storied lore of live performances.

Historic was the hyperbolic but most appropriate way to refer to the two-hour and 35-minute bash, which, coming a day after thew new Wrecking Ball topped the Billboard 200, capped an expectedly strong outing by Springsteen and the E Street Band with a dizzying array of guest star surprises. Of course, this being SXSW, there was no shortage of friends and previous collaborators to draw upon, and Springsteen clearly didn't hestitate to take advantage of their availability.

So Tom Morello was on hand to recreate his contributions to the Wrecking Ball tracks "Death to My Hometown" and "Jack of All Trades," and to pull out his bag of guitar tricks during a fierce "The Ghost of Tom Joad." Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, clad head-to-toe in red — contrasting nicely with the E Street Band's traditional black — sang "The Harder They Come," "Time Will Tell," and "Many Rivers to Cross" (though surprisingly not "Trapped"), while The Animals' Eric Burdon — who Springsteen lauded in his SXSW keynote speech earlier in the day — came via what Springsteen called "the Twitterverse" to sing "We Gotta Get Out of This Place."

The tour de force, however, was the finale, a rendition of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" with both of the evening's opening acts — Alejandro Escovedo and the Low Anthem — along with the members of Arcade Fire and Garland Jeffreys. All this while a feeling-no-pain Glen Hansard (the Swell Season, the Frames) and members of Mumford & Sons and Superchunk watched from the VIP mezzanine.

It was indeed, as Springsteen called it, "a crazy ride," but the second full-length concert of the Wrecking Ball campaign also established that the newly expanded E Street Band — which, at 17 strong, is more like an army than a group — is sharp and road-ready for the tour that starts in earnest on March 18 in Atlanta.

The bulk of the show was similar to the March 9 Apollo Theatre shindig, based around the sober and stock-taking songs from the new album. It also had a sense of occasion; with SXSW joining in the observance of Guthrie's 100th birthday (including a special concert held the same time as Springsteen's show) the troupe bgean Thursday's show with Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home." The opener started a capella and built into a full-band arrangement before the explosive trio of "We Take Care of Our Own," "Wrecking Ball," and "Badlands," with Jake Clemons getting a warm ovation after taking Uncle Big Man's solo spot. In all, Springsteen and the E Streeters performed seven songs from the new album — with Michelle Moore again on hand for "Rocky Ground" — along with complementary older material such as "The Promised Land," "The Rising," "Waiting on a Sunny Day," "My City of Ruins," and a hard-knuckled "Seeds." The five-piece horn section gave the arrangements more heft, muscle and soul — and, let’s face it, Jake Clemons has replaced his uncle, even if he's not standing in the same spot — as did new percussionist Everett Bradley.

Springsteen's mood countered the sober countenance of the repertoire, however. Clearly a little punchy after waking up at 8 a.m. for his "big fucking speech" — "That fucked everything up... Why? Why?!" — he led both band and crowd through a storming "E Street Shuffle" and a moving "Thunder Road," as well as a "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" that continues to pay tribute to Clarence Clemons. He didn't climb to the balcony as he did at the Apollo, but Springsteen did lean into the crowd a few times and worked the front of the stage like a host making sure everyone was having the time of their lives.

And that they did. Springsteen may have told the SXSW crowd that "we need the encouragement," but the most encouraging thing about Thursday's show was how ready he and E Street appear to be ready take the Wrecking Ball to the rest of the world.

25% of the show being tour premieres, including the proper live debut (aside from a few holiday shows in clubs in Asbury Park) of 'Talk to me'.

So much for the nonsensical fear of 'rigid set lists' this time around.

These are also very long shows even by Bruce's standards for so early in the tour. 2 hours 50? Christ almighty.

Great change up last night, Bruce!  Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

I just read this article in the editorial section of our very conservative daily Newspaper.  Athough the Dispatch did title it "The country according to The Boss".....

IN MY OPINION
Bruce Springsteen and the state of our union

BY LEONARD PITTS JR.
[email protected]

It begins with big drums, a guitar seesawing beneath like a deck rolling in high seas. It ends with a fuzz of static and feedback, a hiss of promises broken and a mortgage on the future.

In the 13 songs that unfold in between, one of the elder statesmen of American popular music delivers what might fairly be called a State of the Union Address. And if that sounds grandiose for a rock album, so be it. But know that, for all the manicured eloquence of the constitutionally mandated report President Obama delivered in January, the new Bruce Springsteen album, Wrecking Ball, captures more raw emotional truth about the state of the American Dream than any politician ever could.

These first years of the millennium have been extraordinarily trying, especially for a nation that had passed a quarter century in relative peace. Then came terror. Then came wars. Then came economic meltdown. And in the last, we were galled to find that what had brought us to the brink of ruin was the greed, corruption, mendacity and predatory practices of giant money houses and that we were now required to save them from the consequences of their misdeeds because they were too big to fail.

Meantime, we failed right, left and sideways, as jobs went away and money grew tight, as horizons receded and hope shriveled down to a wrinkled shell of itself and people who’d never asked for all that much to begin with — a fair chance to earn their own bread, care for themselves, house themselves — found their aspirations padlocked behind them, their dreams set out at the curb. In a nation where corporations are people and fetuses are people, actual people could not catch a break, nor even much in the way of empathy.

It is from the heart of this disconnection, this chasm between America that is and America that ought to be, that Springsteen issues his report. He finds depression, lamentation, and resignation, as in a man forced to make a living by piecemeal as a Jack of All Trades. He finds anger, too. In Shackled and Drawn, he sings, “Gambling man rolls the dice, working man pays the bill. It’s still fat and easy up on banker’s hill. Up on banker’s hill, the party’s going strong. Down here below, we’re shackled and drawn.” On We Take Care Of Our Own, the anger is accusatory, a demand for an America that looks out for Americans.

But with the anger, depression, lamentation and resignation, there is also defiance. There are also sprigs of hope. “Tomorrow there’ll be sunshine and all this darkness past,” he promises on Land of Hope And Dreams. The title song, which commemorates the 2010 demolition of Giants Stadium, also functions as a statement of pugnacious pride: “Take your best shot, let me see what you’ve got. Bring on your wrecking ball!” In other words: knock me down — if you can.

There is something quintessentially American in that. One recalls Gen. Anthony McAuliffe’s one-word rejection of a Nazi demand for surrender: “Nuts!” One recalls Franklin Roosevelt’s standing up to “fear itself” in the depths of the Great Depression. One recalls that look on Apollo Creed’s face when Rocky Balboa got up off the canvas.

That is what America is — hope and defiance in the face of challenge — and there is something oddly patriotic in Springsteen’s evocation of that in these hard times Not the easy patriotism of Lee Greenwood’s song and children waving sparklers on July 4th, but the hard and determined patriotism of those who will be down, but never stay down, never accept the gap between the America that is and the one that ought to be.

It is Springsteen’s triumph to honor anger and lamentation, but also to look beyond them. And to remind us that, though hard times come and hard times go, hope and defiance still abide and sustain.

Bring on your wrecking ball.

By Jed Gottlieb  |   Sunday, March 25, 2012  |  http://www.bostonherald.com ; |  Music News

Steven Van Zandt is breaking new ground. He’s on the road with the E Street Band backing up Bruce Springsteen — the tour is at a sold-out TD Garden tomorrow — and he’s playing a gangster on TV.

Wait a minute, that’s what Van Zandt has been doing for years.

While Springsteen’s right-hand man seems to be repeating himself, there are strange new twists to his musical and acting journeys.

“This is a brand new configuration for the E Street Band,” the Winthrop native said from a tour stop in Florida. “Obviously no one can replace Clarence (Clemons, who died in June), like no one could replace Danny (Federici, who died in 2008). So we’ve added a five-piece horn section with two sax players trading off solos.”

The sax men are Jake Clemons, Clarence’s nephew, and Ed Manion, a member of Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions band and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Neither can fill the Big Man’s shoes, but they’re helping to evolve the sound of the 40-year-old outfit.

“This horn section emphasizes the soul part of this band,” Van Zandt said. “When we came up, every music TV show had on the Rolling Stones, then Marvin Gaye, or the Kinks, then Smokey Robinson. It was always rock and soul together. Now we’re getting back to those roots.”

For Van Zandt, the new members and fresh material — he says they’re doing six or seven songs from new album “Wrecking Ball” every night — make for a different E Street experience.

Although not as different as playing a gangster hiding out in rural Norway.

In the Netflix-exclusive series “Lilyhammer,” Van Zandt isn’t whacking guys in Jersey but making nice with the natives (and whacking a wolf) while in witness protection in snowy Scandinavia.

Think it’s an absurd premise for a TV show? Van Zandt agrees.

“(After Norwegian TV producers pitched it to him), I told them, ‘This is ridiculous, it’s never going to work. I’m in. Let’s do it,” he said, then chuckled. “I wasn’t going to play a gangster anytime soon unless Scorsese called, but this was too much fun to pass up.”

Van Zandt eventually became a co-producer and co-wrote all eight of the first season’s episodes. He also did the music supervision and wrote the theme song. “Those Norwegian-sounding instruments you hear, that’s me playing,” he said.

In Norway, the show is a runaway hit with a million viewers (or one fifth of the country’s population) tuning in. Netflix hasn’t released numbers for the show, but it has signed on to co-produce a second season. But with the E Street band on the road indefinitely, Van Zandt doesn’t know when he’ll get back in front of the cameras.

“With ‘The Sopranos,’ I could fly back for a day or two while on tour and shoot a few scenes,” he said. “You can’t really do that when you’re the star of the show and it’s filmed in Lillehammer.”

Van Zandt wants to do more acting and writing — he’s convinced he’s not busy enough even though he also hosts a weekly syndicated radio show and runs a record label. But he’ll never give up touring with Springsteen.

“We’ve been friends since we were kids,” he said. “To do this for a year or 15 months is a dream. As long as the Rolling Stones still tour, we’ll still tour. I feel like we’re the new guys on the road compared to them.”

Tour to go into 2013 then, by the sound of that....

Not quite so sure about the Stones comparison, though! This is the 3rd ESB tour since the Stones last played a note in public..... Sad

I do think it's generally true that the Stones blazed a trail by touring into their sixties. Maybe everyone else would have done it anyway--especially given the sums of money that stand to be made--but the Stones made it seem normal, even expected, for aging artists to just keep going...

Stevie's being nice with the Stones mention. But I believe the plan was always to go into 2013.

NJ Gov Urges Springsteen To Play Atlantic City

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is calling on native son Bruce Springsteen to step up and help Atlantic City by performing at the new Revel casino on Labor Day weekend.

The governor made the plea Tuesday during a tour of the new casino, which opens Monday. The facility wouldn’t have been finished without state tax incentives.

The governor views Revel as the centerpiece of an effort to revive the fortunes of Atlantic City, where the casino business has been on a long downward spiral.

Christie has seen Springsteen perform more than 100 times and says he has already lost out to Beyoncé for the chance to headline at Revel’s grand opening Memorial Day weekend. He says Springsteen could still show his support for New Jersey by performing there during Labor Day weekend.

A publicist for Springsteen, whose catalog includes a song titled “Atlantic City,” declined comment.

The resort says it would love to have Springsteen, if he’s up for it.

You got something against fat people, Willis?

I see the Gov's point.
Nothing wrong with playing a gig at AC, especially if it's going to help the economy
in a rundown area, like so many of the scenes Bruce portrays in his songs.
You are not going one block away from the strip in AC without seeing it.
He's always looking to help the common man.
It's not like Springsteen does not ever do small gigs,  as he does just a bit north in Asbury...

But Christie has not seen the size of the band Springsteen is playing with on this tour,
which probably would need a shoe-horn to fit in a small venue.
But they did fit on Fallon, so why not?

Was it Christie's administration which approved the do-re-me for this theatre rehab?
In that case, he's doing his part, no?

Well, the counter to you is I have trouble with rock stars preaching to me about what politicians should be doing.
Shut up & sing, as the title of the book goes.
I got into it one night in Austin with Kris Kristopherson, that lightweight.

Especially those who own farms in Jersey & pay next to nothing in taxes, ala The Boss & Mr. Bon Jovi.
But, just like the whole outrage the Occupy crowd had last year, as long as there is nothing done about it on Capitol Hill, it's all totally legal.

What did Nellie say?  Well, it's all here...Who knew?

Farm Tax Breaks for N.J. Celebrities
Updated: Thursday, 10 Feb 2011, 1:08 PM EST
Published : Wednesday, 09 Feb 2011, 9:29 PM EST

BY BARBARA NEVINS TAYLOR

MYFOXNY.COM - Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen have been making hit music for years and its no surprise that they've earned enough money to buy big mansions with acres of property, but what might surprise you is the huge tax breaks they, and others, are getting.

It turns out, as far as New Jersey tax collectors are concerned, that they are farmers.

Almost a million acres in New Jersey are certified as farmland. Owners who own at least five acres, practice some kind of agriculture, or manage the trees on their property and sell $500 worth of goods a year qualify for a significant tax break.

They do have to pay the full taxes on their homes, and non-farm property.

Through a trust, Bruce Springsteen owns more than 200 acres in Colts Neck. the taxes for his house and three acres are more than $138,000. But because of the farm tax break, the tax bill on a little more than 200 additional acres is less than $5,000. Town officials say he has horses and an organic farmer working some of the land. A lawyer for the trust had no comment.

In another part of Monmouth County, Bon Jovi has and estate on the Navesink River. Taxes on the mansion and some property add up to $295,68 but his tax bill on an additional 6.85 aces is $104 because he raises honeybees.

A spokesman for Bon Jovi issued a statement saying, "Jon is scrupulous about paying his fair share of taxes. The exemption for raising honey bees existed long before he purchased that land, and he continues to employ a beekeeper and raise honeybees..."

Max Weinberg, E-Street Band drummer, and former band leader on Late Night With Conan O'Brien owns 36 heavily wooded acres near Bon Jovi. Taxes on his home and two acres are $49,068. But the tax bill for the additional 34 acres is $122 because he sells wood.

It's not just celebrities getting the break.

Steve Katz owns pharmacies in Brooklyn. He moved to Colt's Neck so he and his family could have horses and a place to ride. He pays $18,616 in taxes for his house and one acre of land. The tax bill on an additional five acres of farmland is only $65 because he sells hay.

And 9 other homeowners in the same subdivision get the farm tax break.

The tax break law dates back to the 60s, And in the 90's when Republican Christine Todd Whitman was first running for governor it became a big issue because she and her husband claimed the tax break for their farms.

But many say these tax breaks help preserve New Jersey open space and limit development. And Middletown manager Tony Mercantante thinks that can be a good thing.

Merchantante says, "Farming certainly is an activity that the state's been looking to preserve to the extend possible and farmland assessment has allowed farmers to survive."

People in favor or the tax breaks worry that backlash will force a change that hurts real farmers and possible jeopardize agriculture in New Jersey.

But Mercantante says change could occur, and bring more tax money to town's like his, without hurting real farmers.

"I think there should be a sliding scale approach to farmland assessment based upon the extend of your farming activity," Merchantante says.

New York State has a tougher standard. It requires land owners sell $10,000 worth of goods for the farming exemption. That's a dramatic contrast with New Jersey's $500 in sales.

State Senator Jennifer Beck thinks the time may be right to change the law.

Beck says, "I think it is unfair to our other property taxpayers. If you are a fake farmer, and you don't legitimately farm, you are getting a property tax break you are forcing your neighbor to pick up your tab. And that was not the intent of the law. It's violation of the public trust."

It's not just celebrities and people who like the country who get this big break. Large corporations are holding on to cropland and hiring farmers so they can score tax breaks.

Because of the complicated tax rules it's not clear how much money the state might gain if the law is changed. A spokesman for New Jersey Governor Christie said the issue isn't on his radar yet, but it might be in future.
