Damn. Just when it seemed his health would be improving.

Could be the end of the ESB as we know it. Even if he recovers, its hard to imagine him him being in a state to tour when in his 70s and after a stroke.#

The main thing is that he gets well, though.

I know. I didn't even mind him playing with Lady Gaga, just to see him actuve, He was even quoted recently as saying he was hoping the E Street Band would be on the road in 2011 or more likely 2012. As you said, most important thing is him getting well. But the status of the E Street Band looms large.

CLARENCE CLEMONS FIGHTS BACK

We didn't want to believe it when we heard the news yesterday, but Backstreets has confirmed through independent sources that Clarence Clemons has suffered a massive stroke. After two subsequent brain surgeries at a Florida hospital, the good news is that Clarence is currently responsive and in stable condition, though still in a fight for his life. "If anyone can pull off the miracle, it's him," says a close friend. "He's fought back from so much before."

Clarence is a fighter....

More news...from Backstreets:

MIRACLES ARE HAPPENING"
The latest out of Florida has Clarence Clemons in better condition than anyone expected, a close friend tells Backstreets: "Yesterday, it did not look good at all. Today... miracles are happening. His vital signs are improving. He's responsive. His eyes are welling up when we're talking to him. He was paralyzed on his left side, but now he's squeezing with his left hand. This is the best news we've heard since [the stroke] happened — it's nothing short of miraculous. The next five days will still be critical. But he's a fighter."

Please join us in continuing to send prayers, love, and light to the Big Man.

While we wait for an official statement about Clarence Clemons' condition following his stroke, good news has been trickling in. A "close friend" of the E Street Band saxophonist recently told the Springsteen fanzine Backstreets that his condition is improving. "Yesterday, it did not look good at all," the source said. "Today . . . miracles are happening.

E Street Band Saxophonist Clarence Clemons Has Suffered A Stroke

That report is consistent with what Fox 5 New York has heard: "His vital signs are improving. He's responsive. He was paralyzed on his left side, but was squeezing with his left hand."

Rolling Stone has reached out to the Springsteen and Clemons camps for comment and will update when we have additional information.

Choose Rolling Stone's Cover: The Sheepdogs vs. Lelia Broussard. Vote Now!

In February I conducted a telephone interview with Clemons when the news came out that he was playing sax on the new Lady Gaga album Born This Way. He was in such a jovial mood that I used the opportunity to ask Clemons a handful of burning questions. Here's that previously unpublished segment of the interview:

How is your health these days?

Good. You know, something like this [playing with Lady Gaga] makes me feel a lot better. It's so inspiring – plus the possibility of going on tour with her. Wouldn't that be great?

You had back surgery recently, right?

Yeah, spinal surgery. I had both my knees replaced, I had some fusion and some L2s, L5s and a lift on the left side.

Photos: Bruce Springsteen's Surprise Set at Asbury Park

Are there any more surgeries planned?

I don't know what else they can do. What else is left to replace? I got everything just about covered now.

The fans are fascinated by the recording of Nebraska and whether or not the full band tried to record those songs.

Oh, I think when Bruce brings the band in on music when he knows what he wants. It's not a matter of "try it and make it fit." It fits naturally or it does not.

So the band did not try to record those songs as a full band?

No, as a full band, I don't think so.

What did you think about the music on Human Touch and Lucky Town when they came out?

At that point in his life, that is what he wanted to say and what he want do to. If it's a question about [liking them more than] Born To Run or Darkness On The Edge of Town, I don't know. I'm a Bruce fan and whatever he does is fine with me.

I've read that you love "Sad Eyes."

I love it. It's one of his greatest vocal tracks.

The Smoking Gun posted a tour rider from 2002. It said that at 9:45 p.m. a "whole fresh roasted chicken" is to be "boxed and placed in your dressing room." Did you really eat an entire roast chicken in the middle of the show?

No, but I did have dinner after the show.

But obviously not right in the middle of it…

No, no! [Laughs hysterically] Jeez, there wasn't time to get off and eat. That's a funny think to think about. [Laughs even harder]. But I mean the person that wrote that never saw the band playing. There's no way that could have happened.

You almost played for the Cleveland Browns, right?

Almost! I was going in as a free agent, trying out for the team. I went down and tried out for the team, but I was in a car accident that knocked me out of football.

Do you ever think of how different your life might have been had you not been in that car accident?

Well yeah, it would have been a lot different. That's why some things happen in your life. You can't understand why it happened, but it happened for a reason. And if you're wise enough to see it and understand it, it makes your life a lot easier – instead of complaining all the time, yada yada yada. You've got to play the hand you're dealt. I never thought I'd be a quote "rock & roll star." I just loved to play, and then I met Bruce right after this car accident.

One last question: in the mid-Eighties, who could have bench-pressed more – you or Bruce?

Me, definitely. Without a doubt. [Laughs]. I don't know about now though...

Saxophonist Clemons suffers stroke

Lets hope he makes a speedy and full recovery.......

By WENN.COM

Bruce Springsteen's longtime saxophonist in the E Street Band has suffered a stroke, according to reports.

Clarence Clemons fell sick at his home in Florida on Sunday, reports Showbiz411.com. No further information about the star's condition is known as WENN went to press.

The news comes just days after Clemons, who performed with Lady Gaga on the recent American Idol season finale, pulled out of plans to play the U.S. National Anthem at the NBA Finals last week due to a hand injury.

Clemons has experienced a number of health problems in the past 12 months - he has had both knees replaced, and undergone spinal fusion surgery.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine in February, he said, "The timing was perfect because it didn't interfere with a lot of stuff that was going on in my life. It (the surgery) made me stronger, and for the past year I've been in physical therapy a few days a week working my a** off to get back in shape. I'm walking better now, though I still use a cane and crutches. But now I'm having hip problems again. I don't know why."

How's this for timing? Seems thier is a Sprungsteen solo album in the works.
From Backstreets:
ANIELLO IN THE MIX
"Forthcoming album"... that has a nice ring to it
Back in March, after word circulated that Springsteen had brought drummer Matt Chamberlain into the studio, we posted our hunch that Springsteen was working with prodcuer Ron Aniello. Ron co-produced Patti Scialfa's Play It As It Lays and her "Children's Song" duet with Springsteen on the Every Mother Counts comp; he also jammed with Bruce at the most recent school benefit at the Stone Pony.

Further evidence has now shown up on the website for the Nettwork Music Group, where Aniello's profile lists him as prodcuer of a "forthcoming album" from Bruce Springsteen. (Nice detective work, Sue McDonald and Blogness on the Edge of Town!) Just how forthcoming... that remains to be seen.

His show is still listed on BB KINGS website for August 4th but I bet he's going to cancel or postpone the gig, it's just too soon. Recovery time has to be much longer, it could take years. Wow that is just a shame.

Been a long time since I posted on this thread.  But thought this article was good enough to post:

The Boss on Stage, but ‘Saddie’ Out in Right
By KEVIN COYNE
Published: July 9, 2011

One summer night in 1973, two friends who had not met since high school bumped into each other outside a bar on the Jersey Shore: Bruce Springsteen was walking in, his old baseball teammate was walking out. They went back inside, had a few drinks and reminisced.

They talked about the nuns at St. Rose of Lima School, where they were seatmates in seventh grade, and about baseball games whose scores they still remembered. Springsteen told his friend that he had released two albums and that his band had just opened an arena show for the Beach Boys and was starting to draw big crowds. They stayed at the bar, the Headliner, in Neptune until closing, then did not see each other again for more than three decades. But “Glory Days,” a 1984 Springsteen song at least partly inspired by that night, brought them together again.

Those of us from Springsteen’s hometown, Freehold, N.J., knew that “Glory Days,” like much of his work, was about the place where we grew up and where many of us still live. So rich are Springsteen’s descriptions of the characters he knew, the plots he watched unfold, that some of his songs sound to us like documentaries.

But “Glory Days” was also the source of an enduring mystery. Who was that speedball pitcher in the song?

I finally found out at a reunion we held recently for our Little League’s 60th anniversary — not from Springsteen, who did not come, but from Dick Enderly, once a fine schoolboy pitcher, who had put the question to Springsteen at their 30th high school reunion in 1997, and received the answer.

“Joe DePugh,” Enderly told me. “I got it straight from the horse’s mouth.”

DePugh, the oldest of six brothers, was a star Little League pitcher and a teammate of Springsteen’s in the Babe Ruth League. A joint assessment of their comparative baseball skills led to DePugh’s affectionate nickname for Springsteen, a right fielder: Saddie.

By high school, they had drifted apart.

“He lost interest in baseball, and I was nothing but sports,” said DePugh, now 61, who also played basketball and football.

As a high school senior, he had several offers to play college basketball and an invitation to try out for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In a telephone interview, DePugh said: “I was like: ‘I’m going to be a pitcher for the Dodgers. No, I’m going to college. No, I’m going to be a pitcher for the Dodgers.’ Well, the tryout cleared all that up.”

He played basketball at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and earned a degree in English. But by the time he graduated, his parents had died and DePugh was the legal guardian of his two youngest brothers. DePugh was a substitute teacher for a while but could not find a permanent teaching position, so he became a self-employed contractor. He also played in a summer basketball league, and it was after a game that he ran into Springsteen at the Headliner.

A few years later, DePugh moved to Vermont. His friend Scott Wright always played Springsteen’s music on a boom box on job sites, and DePugh told him about meeting Springsteen at the Headliner. When “Glory Days,” a track on “Born in the U.S.A.,” was released, Wright heard it first.

“He told me, ‘Springsteen has a new album out, and there’s a song on there about you,’ ” DePugh said. “ ‘It’s exactly the story you told me.’ ”

DePugh was skeptical, so Wright called a radio station in Montpelier, Vt., and requested the song.

“My wife starts bawling,” DePugh said. “That’s how I knew exactly that it was me.”

The story spread slowly among his friends in Vermont and, when DePugh was 50, he was recruited to join a baseball league for older men.

“When I showed up for the first practice that summer,” he said, “these guys would come up to me and feel the sleeve of my shirt, and say: ‘Oh, you’re real. We thought you were a legend.’ I pitched the whole season that year and ended up with a 0.00 earned run average.”

DePugh attended his 35th high school reunion in 2002, but Springsteen did not. Their classmate Don Norkus eventually got them together for lunch in May 2005, at an Italian restaurant in Red Bank, N.J.

“Bruce pulls in and I point at him and he points at me, and that’s when the hugging started,” DePugh said. They stayed until they were almost the last customers left, as they had at the Headliner three decades earlier.

DePugh spends the colder months in Florida, stopping in New Jersey when he passes through in the spring and the fall. He and Springsteen met again a couple of years ago, at an Italian restaurant in Freehold. At the end of the night, they said their goodbyes at the back door.

“He said, ‘Always remember, I love you,’ not like some corny Budweiser commercial, but a real sentimental thing,” DePugh said. “I was dumbfounded. I said, ‘Thanks, Saddie.’ That was all I could come up with, and all of a sudden, he’s out the door. And it hit me that you’ve got to do a little better than that, so I pulled the door open and yelled down to him, ‘Sad!’ He turned around and I pointed at him and said, ‘I love you, too, and I’m real proud of you.’ And he just waved.”

Kevin Coyne, who teaches at Columbia Journalism School, is the historian for Freehold, N.J.

A TRIBUTE TO CLARENCE CLEMONS
w/ STEVE SMITH & THE NAKEDS
+ Special Guests

8:00PM

An ongoing career that has spanned thirty years, CLARENCE CLEMONS has left his distinctive mark on all that he has come in contact with. The sheer spectrum of his vast accomplishments is in itself impressive. He has traveled many roads of artistic endeavors. He has never restricted himself to one form of creative expression because he draws from a wide array of talents. In addition to an ever lengthening roster of live concerts, performances and recording projects, he also has to his credit a swiftly growing theatrical and television portfolio.

Clemons is most widely known for his unmistakable saxophone sound, which for more than two decades, has lofted Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band to, as some have deemed it, the greatest rock and roll band in the world. With the influences of such greats as Junior Walker, King Curtis, and Gato Barbieri, Clemons has developed his own unique style that has made him one of the most renowned saxophonists in the world. His live performances with the E Street Band, as well as with his own Red Bank Rockers, Jerry Garcia Band, The Grateful Dead, and Ringo Starr's All Star Band, have left audiences breathless, clinging to every expressive note pouring from his horn.

Mr. Clemons' discography is large and varied, creating what seems to be an endlessly definitive statement of musical expression. He has recorded albums with such notable artists as Aretha Franklin, Paul Young, Great White, Alvin Lee, Roy Orbison, and Patti LaBelle. The greatest testament to his wide appeal would be his unique ability to span a range of musical genres from David Koz's "Sax Man" LP to Ricky Skaggs' LP "Honey".

Steve Smith & The Nakeds are now celebrating thirty-five esteemed years touring throughout the USA and Canada, the rhythm & blues powerhouse has taken their distinct infectious blend of rhythm, brass, and fun to the touring stage with Bruce Springsteen's saxophonist, Clarence Clemons for a series of critically acclaimed performances. They have been featured on television, appearing on MTV's video countdown program "The Basement Tapes", and more recently, on the Fox TV season 6 Family Guy DVD box set.

Guys DIME has a hot new upgrade boot from Bruce's show here at Fox Theater in Atlanta on the 78 tour.....sounds like something worth grabbing!

30 September '78 if I'm not mistaken? If its an upgrade of that show, it should be a cracker.

Indeed it is Gazza:

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
The Fox

That and any other previous versions are FM sourced while this is a pre-FM upgrade

A JEMS Archive Upgrade in association with Slowburn

Source 1: 1st generation Pre-FM cassettes
Cassette Transfer: Nakamichi CR-7A (azimuth adjusted) --> Sound Devices USBPre2 audio interface (24/96) --> Audacity 1.3 capture

Source 2: 1st generation WINZ-FM broadcast recorded on reel to reel at 7-1/2 IPS
Reel Transfer: Otari 5050 mk2 --> Sound Devices USBPre2 audio interface (24/96) --> Audacity 1.3 capture

The two sources were edited together in Adobe Audition 3.0 multitrack at 24/96. Converted to 16/44 for this release. Traders Little Helper used to convert to FLAC. There is no mixing of the sources. What you hear is Source 1 with the exceptions noted below.

Notes:

Without question, a significant factor in what makes the Darkness tour Bruce's greatest in the minds of many is the series of live FM broadcasts he did from July to December 1978.

These sublime broadcasts reached listeners who had only heard tales of how good Bruce and the band were in concert and now they could hear it for themselves. Those who were already fans considered the Agora or Winterland wonderful gifts and surely hundreds if not thousands recorded them off the radio as they happened and played them again and again like the rest of us because they sounded so good. For an entire generation of fans, the Darkness tour broadcasts were the catalyst to deeper devotion, especially in Europe.

That's because those off-air recordings provided the source tapes for major bootleg releases like Piece De Resistance (9/19/78) and Live in the Promised Land (12/15/78). It has been suggested that as many as 50,000 copies were sold of the three-LP Piece. And there's a plausible, long-standing theory that Springsteen's fanbase in Europe was ignited by these bootlegs. Remember, in 1978 Springsteen didn't tour Europe (it would be another three years before that happened), and he played a mere four shows there in 1975. For fans starved for Springsteen in England, Italy, Sweden or Germany, the Darkness tour bootlegs confirmed the legend and expanded the base.

And while The Roxy, The Agora, Passaic and Winterland have become so iconic as to be treated as proper nouns, there were five radio broadcasts in 1978, not just four. So why isn't The Fox another capitalized term in the Springsteeen Dictionary?

September 30, 1978, a mere 11 days after the Passaic broadcast blasted out of radios throughout the northeast, the E Street Band rolled into the Fox Theater in Atlanta for the first of two shows (rescheduled from July after Bruce came down with a throat infection) that marked the end of the first long leg of the Darkness tour. Night one was broadcast live across the southeast on 20 or so radio stations according to the indispensable Brucebase Wiki.

As legend has it, on the night of September 30, storms rolled across the region and the bad weather is blamed for reception problems with the radio broadcast. Unlike Passaic where masses recorded, it seems but a few folks in the south had their tape decks rolling as Bruce took the stage at the Fox, and tapes of Atlanta have never been as good as the other four '78 broadcasts.

The best bootleg source to date, Same Old Played Out Scenes (Doberman), describes the recording problems in its liner notes: "major reception problems and resulting sound defects for most people recording [are] the principle [sic] reason why this concert has become something of a rarity on unofficial releases over the years as the sound quality was just not as good as the other [broadcasts]." So much so that the Atlanta show never even made it to bootleg vinyl, which is amazing when you consider how widely bootlegged the other four shows were.

Same Old Played Out Scenes itself is a composite of "four different source tapes," per the liners, "with the great bulk of the material taken from a previous CD release called Here's To Ya, which remains, as far as we know, the best sound quality source tape of this concert, though with certain songs that were either edited or suffer major disruption replaced by the best possible alternate recording."

Isn't this the point in the notes where I write "until now"?

Earlier this year, JEMS acquired several tapes from a kind and generous soul who, while not a collector, had a number of interesting recordings land in his lap back in the day. The tapes had not been played in more than three decades. In the box were two cassettes of the Atlanta show. As luck would have it, they weren't merely an upgrade of the broadcast but a pre-FM recording of the show dubbed from 15 IPS reels.

The sound quality of the pre-FM source is truly first rate, lacking the heavy compression of the over-the-air broadcast and boasting much wider stereo separation than any extant FM source. The pre-FM also corrects most of the speed issues with the previous bootlegs. And we do pick up some previously missing audio bits. These includes a few sentences spoken by Bruce before "Santa Claus" and, more significantly, the 40 or so seconds that were missing from the start of "Backstreets" plus some band member intros after that song. That being said, the cassettes were in less-than-ideal condition and required re-shelling and baking for playback. Experienced ears might pick up on very minor fluctuations (e.g. on the tape flips) that couldn't be corrected.

In short, what we do have sounds awesome. However, because it is Atlanta, we're still snake bit. The pre-FM source is missing the entire encore (presumably a lost third cassette, and yes, we've asked if it might be hiding behind dresser or something), needs a long patch (6+ minutes) from halfway through "Prove It All Night" through the start of "Racing in the Street" (we had hoped tape baking would fix this damaged part but it didn't), plus a tiny patch at the very end of "Because the Night."

But even that bad news has a silver lining, as JEMS also found--gathering dust in its own archive--a 7-1/2 IPS reel to reel of the full broadcast from WINZ-FM Miami that we feel is superior to what's found on Same Old Played Out Scenes, having a more natural, less processed and compressed sound. This new reel was used to patch the longer missing bits (e.g. the "Prove It" to "Racing" chunk noted above) in the pre-FM and provide the encore.

The only material flaw in the WINZ source are a few short (one second or less) dropouts in "Raise Your Hand" that, while unfortunate, aren't particularly annoying, they're just there. After experimenting with using SOPOS to patch the dropouts, we decided that the "repaired" version sounded worse than the original as the gaps are so short, the change in sources is jarring. So we've left "Raise Your Hand" from the WINZ tape intact, with dropouts, but also included an extra file of "Raise Your Hand" with no dropouts from Same Old Played Out Scenes. You can choose which you prefer.

The end result is not perfect, but it is 100% complete, for the first time ever, and it is the best-sounding Fox Theater recording by a wide margin, especially the 85% of the show that's now pre-FM, including the show's one-off cover of James Brown's "Night Train." Brown grew up in Georgia which would explain this inspired cover choice. Bruce and the band perform the instrumental complete with a James Brown-style intro and we can only presume what dance moves he gave the crowd during this one.

The fresh, azimuth-adjusted transfer of both sources was done last month and JEMS' longtime colleague Slowburn handled the patching and prepping which was a lot of work so kudos to him too. Samples provided. We hope you enjoy the latest in our on-going upgrade series.

So here is The Fox, finally ready to take it's rightful place in Springsteen bootleg history.

EDIT EDIT EDIT

There are two files that are included twice by mistake. Apparently I misspelled two files before reflacing the first set and they weren't overwritten and somehow my quality control was none existent.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to tinker with the torrent at this time. If the mods think I should let me know how to.

Otherwise when listening delete/skip

t01 Good Rocking Tonight
t06 he Promised Land

Everything should be fine then. Actually it doesn't matter which of t01 and t06 versions you delete. They are identical except for the name.
