Do you mean shows he's played or shows I've been at? Bruce plays as many shows in Ireland as he does in England - which has almost ten times the population.

With all these shows locally, I havent needed to venture further afield. Plus in '99 and '03 he chose to play Europe the same summer as when Id already bought tickets for multiple Stones gigs!

2008 when I went to Milan and Paris was the first time Id travelled outside Ireland to see Bruce since 1996. Last year I was at Hyde Park and Glasgow too.

I've seen every show he's ever played in Ireland (19 in total since '85 - 16 in Dublin, 3 in Belfast) plus one of the two Dublin guest appearances he made with Joe Ely (I missed the '93 one, but saw the St Paddys Day one in '96).

The ones further afield - London '81, Newcastle '85, London '88, Glasgow and London '93, Edinburgh '96 plus the four I mentioned above in 2008-09)

Wembley Arena on the River tour in '81 the night before I turned 18 is still to this day the greatest gig I've ever seen, by anyone.

I don't know what I was thinking. I guess 11 shows in Ireland since 2005 is pretty self explanatory. I won't take this opportunity to whine about the lack of california shows on the last leg again. Honest I won't. Cry

http://entertainment.mediamarkt.nl/default.aspx?id=21&p2=1448111

According to this Dutch site, 'The Way' is listed as a 22nd song on the 2-CD set of outtakes.

Apparently, its a hidden bonus track - http://www.betrue.nl/nieuws/nieuws.html#way

Translated : "According to the track-list on Mediamarket, the Darkness-box contains an additional bonus track "The Way". This would bring the total number of out-takes to 22 instead of 21. There's been a rumour for a while about a hidden bonus track. Springsteen-biographer Dave Marsh said earlier that he knew why The Way was not included, but that he would not reveal the reason why until after the release date."

Conan O’Brien’s new TV show debuts on TBS next month but his longtime bandleader, Max Weinberg, won’t be pounding the drums on the new gig. Turns out his heart just wasn’t into it.

Ever since last April when O’Brien announced he would host a new show on TBS, speculation as to whether Weinberg would accompany the ginger-haired comic to the new digs was centered around whether the drummer’s dual career as a TV bandleader / E Street Band drummer was in conflict.

Although Weinberg took some time off from last year’s Working On A Dream tour so he could be in Burbank for the start of “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien,” the rumor mill whispered that O’Brien was less than pleased about Weinberg splitting his time between Bruce Springsteen and the TV show. Which really doesn’t make all that much sense when you consider that O’Brien is a fan and a friend of The Boss.

Yes, sometimes the rumors are wrong, demonstrated with Weinberg's recent revelation during an interview with Fancast.com’s Adam Buckman that it was his heart that held his fate. Specifically, a malfunctioning heart valve.

“I can make a little news here, which I haven’t talked about to anybody,” Weinberg told Buckman during the interview set to coincide with the debut HBO’s “The Promise: The Making Of Darkness On The Edge Of Town.” “But on Feb. 8, I came to the end of a 26-year watchful, waiting odyssey that culminated in 12 hours of massively invasive open-heart surgery.”

Although Weinberg lived with heart problems for nearly three decades, the drummer said his condition didn’t become life-threatening until two years ago, resulting in heart surgery on Feb. 8, only two weeks after Conan’s last “Tonight Show” aired on NBC.

As to the entire Leno mess involving the magnificently jawed comedian handing over reins of the “Tonight Show” over to O’Brien only to take them back a few months later, Weinberg did say the stress resulting from the NBC / O’Brien conflict may have contributed to his heart condition.

“It was very dramatic,” Weinberg said. “At my age, just being in this business for as long as I’ve been, nothing really surprises me, particularly in the landscape of television. [But] any abrupt ending to anything is shocking. It was very weird and awkward and, of course, I felt really bad for some of the people who moved out there – over a hundred people from New York who really took the hit, people who had purchased homes.”

As O’Brien prepares for the November launch of his new show on TBS, the bandleader role will be filled by guitarist Jimmy Vivino. Meanwhile, Weinberg is touring with his 15-piece big band as well as looking forward to what the future might bring.

“I’m playing better than I ever did,” Weinberg said during the Fancast.com interview. “I’m not looking backward. I feel wonderful about where I’m at – physically, personally, professionally.”

There’s a throwaway bit in the 1977 studio footage at the heart of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town  where co-producer Jon Landau points to Bruce Springsteen’s fat song notebook and blames it for everyone’s exhaustion. “The only thing that can come out of this book is more work!” he announces, only half-joking.

Behind the scenes at Springsteen's Darkness sessions

It’s a telling moment in the documentary, which begins airing on HBO tonight (and will be released as part of the forthcoming Darkness box set). Sure, the singer and his band worked obsessively on Born to Run’s eight songs — a process captured on a documentary included with that album’s recent reissue. But its follow-up, 1978’s Darkness on the Edge of Town, was recorded under different circumstances. Born to Run made him a star beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. At the same time, a lawsuit between Springsteen and his then-manager Mike Appel effectively prohibited any follow-up recording for the next 18 months.

Photos: See vintage shots of Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen dealt with the roadblock by gigging and working on new songs at his house in Holmdel, New Jersey. The Promise has some priceless footage of one session there: a 27-year-old Bruce, stripped to the waist, hair exploded into a near-afro, working the E Street band through “Candy’s Boy” and “Something In The Night.” When the lawsuit was finally settled in June 1977, everyone piled into the Record Plant in New York City to begin work on Darkness with Landau and a young engineer named Jimmy Iovine. The ambitious bandleader had around 70 new songs in his book.

At this point, the narrative arc of The Promise becomes the carving of Springsteen’s vision from that songbook, like statue from marble. The vision was a dark one. “I felt a sense of accountability to the people I had grown up alongside,” Springsteen says in the film, reflecting back. “It’s a reckoning with the adult world … with a life of limitations and compromises.”

The songs that made the final cut, hardbitten tales of struggle and dashed dreams, did not make for a mega-hit album. Yet, influenced by both the punk rock exploding in New York City at the time, and the classic country music that Springsteen was beginning to explore, they have proved quite durable; if anything, being less over-exposed than the material from Born to Run, they’ve only accrued power over the years.

If all The Promise did was revisit that material, it would be a worthy project. But many of the doc’s best moments involve songs that never made the album. Patti Smith tells a touching story of completing the lyrics to “Because the Night,” a half-finished song begun during the Darkness sessions but given away because it didn’t fit the album’s theme. (Smith’s version, ironically, became a bigger hit than anything on Darkness.) And the film’s most electric moment captures Springsteen, in a tight white v-neck tee, pounding out a rough sketch of The River’s “Sherry Darling” on piano while Stevie Van Zandt, in headscarf and tracksuit jacket, drums on a packing blanket, howling jive-talk backing vocals. It’s two close friends goofing around, cracking up, totally stoned on invention.

The 90-minute film drags a little near the end, dawdling in studio-wonk territory. Springsteen scholars, though, may feel questions remain unanswered. The specifics of the lawsuit with Mike Appel (who, surprisingly, appears in the film) are a bit fuzzy. And it’s never quite clear why the titular song “The Promise” — long speculated to be about Springsteen’s relationship with Appel, a notion untouched here — was cut from the final album when it had once been its lynchpin.

In the end, Van Zandt delivers the film’s most startling line. “It’s a bit tragic, in a way,” he muses in hindsight, referring to Springsteen’s decision to make concept-album art like Darkness on the Edge of Town at the expense of hits. “‘Cause he would have been one of the great pop songwriters of all time.”

Well, it’s a thought. But as The Promise shows, and Van Zandt surely knows, greatness takes many forms.

Bruce Springsteen and Joe Grushecky are celebrating the 15th anniverary of Grushecky's Bruce-produced American Babylon. Let's say that again: it's been 15 years since the release of American Babylon and the pair's October Assault tour, which made Bruce an honorary Houserocker for a string of dates in 1995.

To mark the occasion, Bruce and Joe are teaming up again, with two Pittsburgh-area shows scheduled at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum on November 4 and 5. Billed as "Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers with Special Guest Bruce Springsteen," the concerts include opening acts Jill West & Blues Attack on 11/4, and I Drive (featuring Joe's son Johnny Grushecky) on 11/5.

Tickets, ranging from $45 to $75 with limited $100 gold circle seats, go on sale October 20 at 10 a.m.

Bruce live on E Street Radio, 11/15
Wanna join him? 20 lucky fans will do just that.
The night before The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story is released, SiriusXM will broadcast a special, two-hour live show on E Street Radio, featuring none other than Bruce Springsteen in the studio. He'll be answering questions from fans - from a lucky group of fans right there in the studio in the first hour (more on that in a sec), and taking phone calls in the second hour.

E Street Radio's On the Edge of Your Town contest is giving 20 fans the chance to be there in the "intimate studio audience" to ask your question to Bruce face to face:

To qualify, SiriusXM will be asking E Street listeners to submit their most creative, original, insightful and relevant questions about Bruce Springsteen's The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story for the opportunity to pose the question in person to Bruce Springsteen directly, at the event on the evening of November 15 in New York City, presented by SiriusXM host Dave Marsh.

In addition to being invited down to the studio for the broadcast, each of the 20 winners will win a copy of the 3CD/DVD box set.

The contest runs through November 5 at noon Eastern. Ready? Set? Get insightful! Just keep it to 1,000 characters, chatterbox. Click here for complete details, rules, and to enter.

Already in the top 5 or 6 Bruce albums ever for me. Honestly.

Which is some going for a selection of 22 songs that were leftovers from a 32 year old album (10 were released in 1978 and 6 others were included on 'Tracks' in 1998)

I've long maintained that 'The Promise' (either of the two 'Darkness' outtake versions that have been bootlegged) is one of the top 10 Bruce songs ever (the 1998 remake on 'Tracks' didnt do it justice) - the version thats on this album seems to be one of those two takes, but tweaked a bit.

No matter - it remains wonderful beyond words.

Other early favourites for me are the alternate 'Racing In The Street', 'One Way Street', 'The Brokenhearted' and (especially) 'Breakaway' (love the 'Something in The Night' guitar riff).

Not a single weak song amongst the whole collection. Ridiculously brilliant.
