Thanks Lefty. I didnt know there actually was a 'place' called Mary's Place! I wonder if that's what Bruce was referring to in his song. Nah, probably not.

I always got the impression that the song was about a wake for the girl in the title.

Heard from a friend who was at the Alejandro Escovedo show tonight at The Stone Pony.

Bruce joined him for three songs, including 'Beast Of Burden'.   Cool

he's already done one - the Seeger Sessions.

If he's going to do a 'left of field' project next, my vote is for a country album.  I think he'd make an absolutely brilliant one.

This version seems fine - dont know if its the same as what Meg posted as it seems to have been removed. Gina seems to have fixed the synch problems.

Its on facebook, so you'll probably have to log in to view it - http://www.facebook.com/index.php?lh=d4509eef0352ff08d5b918c5b99f617f&#!/video/v...

Very nice version. Probably the most 'recent' Stones song that Bruce has ever covered?

Fixed version's been upped @ YouTube - www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBPDqtZBFeg

Definitely the most recent Stones cover.
Not totally out of left field, though. Alejandro's been playing it for a while.
'Sway', too.

Darkness reissue package almost done, documentary premieres next month

Today's Shore Fire press release reads: "Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau Management, and Columbia Records are working on completing a new package related to Darkness on the Edge of Town, which will include the new Thom Zimny film The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Further details will be announced when they are finalized."

Zimny created the Wings For Wheels doc for the Born to Run 30th Anniversary box; before his new film about Darkness comes home on DVD, it will premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, according to the press release.

Speaking to IndieWIRE, festival documentary programmer Thom Powers says that The Promise draws on "a treasure trove of footage from the 1970s. You see all the twists and turns of the making of this album. And we're the first people to announce that this film even existed... It's been in the works for a couple years now in total secrecy. And we're very proud to be presenting it."

The description of the film from TIFF.net: "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town takes us into the studio with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for the recording of their fourth album. Grammy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny has collaborated with Springsteen on this documentary, gaining access to never before seen footage shot between 1976-1978, capturing home rehearsals and recording sessions that allow us to see Springsteen's creative process at work."

TIFF runs from September 9 - 19. According to the festival website, a confirmed schedule will be posted August 24. Tickets are available now.

Amazing that, despite the fact that Bruce NEVER did much in the way of TV in the 70s (in fact, for much of the 80's too), that there was so much studio footage captured on film which has remained in vaults for over three decades and which has never even really been rumoured to exist.

Sounds very nice. (And hopefully the title suggests that a 1977 version of 'The Promise' will feature amongst the bonus material on the reissue.

Hopefully though this documentary ISN'T at the expense of a 1978 concert being included. That really would be a missed opportunity, if so.

Details Revealed About New Springsteen Documentary

'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' film features unseen studio footage band interviews

By Andy Greene
Aug 13, 2010

...

The forthcoming Bruce Springsteen documentary The Promise: The Making Of Darkness On The Edge Of Town opens with spare but powerful imagery: black and white footage of a young Springsteen working in the studio on his landmark 1978 album Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The film will air on HBO in October — about the time Springsteen plans to release a deluxe edition of the disc — and screen as part of the prestigious Gala section of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14th.

Rolling Stone recently spoke to Thom Powers, the Toronto festival's documentary programmer. "Lots of rock & roll movies are about something [besides artistry] — substance abuse, ego problems or the glamour of being a rock star," Powers explains. "What's missing from those films is an emphasis on what makes us interested in this artist, their creative process. The strength of this movie is that is just concentrates on the making of just one album. There's not even much concert footage." (It's been widely reported that Edward Norton will interview Springsteen at the Toronto Film Festival. Powers, however, can't yet comment on that.)

The doc combines the studio footage — previously unknown to fans — with present-day interviews with main members of the band, including Danny Federici before he passed away. (Patti Smith is also interviewed in the movie, discussing how she co-wrote "Because The Night" with Springsteen.) "What really struck me about these interviews is the vivid sense of recall that they have," says Powers. "You don't get the feeling that these are the same old stories they've polished up for the press all the time — especially with Springsteen. He gave long interviews for the film and just about everything he says is really interesting."

Powers points out a special bonus for fans of the music: a trove of original studio recordings. "In the video footage there are scenes of Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt improvising songs you've never heard before," he says. "Making use of the audio tracks you really get a sense of how those songs came together."

....still no mention anywhere in the last paragraph of that article or in those quotes about a 1978 concert DVD being part of the 'expanded' reissue package.

It'll be a HUGE anti-climax and a wasted opportunity if there isn't because there at least half a dozen full length concerts that are known to exist - Phoenix (8th July), the three Passaic shows (19.20,21 September), Landover, Maryland (15 August and probably the 2nd November show as well as theres a soundboard from that taken from the in-house feed) and the never publicly seen but known to exist 'Holy Grail' that is the Winterland, San Francisco gig from 15th December.

MR. SPRINGSTEEN GOES TO TORONTO
The Toronto International Film Festival confirms today that, in addition to the premiere of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, the festival will also be hosting an appearance from Bruce Springsteen himself. As part of TIFF's Mavericks series, Springsteen will be interviewed by actor Edward Norton, to "discuss the film as well as the relationship between his music and American filmmaking." Read more about the Mavericks series here.

TIFF.net also has additional information about The Promise, including a newly announced schedule: the documentary will premiere on Tuesday, September 14 at 9:30 p.m., with additional screenings on September 15 and 18.

For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after 'Born To Run' and before the collection of songs that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' became."

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Brokenhearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. Advanced word on the documentary is so strong that it was invited to debut at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and will make its television debut on HBO on October 7.

DVD 1: "THE PROMISE: THE MAKING OF 'DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN'"

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' in its entirety from Asbury Park.
