NEW YORK January 15, 2010 (AP) The Associated Press

E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons says he's "in great spirits" after undergoing back surgery.

Bruce Springsteen's longtime sidekick issued a statement to The Associated Press on Friday saying he's "looking forward to a brighter future and playing more music!"

The Big Man's already doing a little Tweeting.

Clemons, who turned 68 on Monday, sends his love to fans via Twitter. He adds that after he recovers, "We can dance again!"

He also Tweeted: "Bless the people in Haiti."

Clemons had the surgery on Wednesday at a Manhattan hospital.

The band's taking a breather after globe-trotting for the better part of two years.

Bruce was at the beach again yesterday.
Asbury Park, not St. Barts.

The Paramount Theatre was the site for night two of Light Of Day 10, and Bruce made another appearance in support of his friend Bob Benjamin's charity.

He sat in with Willie Nile for 'Heaven Help The Lonely' and Jesse Malin on 'Broken Radio' early in the show, and later joined Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers for an hour plus.

Highlights included a raucous 'Johnny 99' and a greazy 'Pink Cadillac' with Danny Clinch on harp.
Lots of great guitar work from Bruce throughout the set.

Plenty of cameras in the house, so the YouTube's should be popping up soon...  Smiley

Little Steven defends his 'coolest garage rock of the last decade' picks. 'Bruce Springsteen? Call it employment insurance'
by Clark Collis

Steven Van Zandt recently counted down what he believes to be the coolest garage rock songs and albums of the decade on his Undergound Garage radio show. There’s a lot of great music on both lists. But there’s also some eyebrow-raising choices. For example, several of the acts Little Steven recommends are on the guitarist’s own Wicked Cool label. It also transpires that Steven is a huuuuuge fan of the CD Magic by Bruce Springsteen, who really is Van Zandt’s “Boss” when he’s playing with the E Street Band. We asked Van Zandt to defend five of his more “interesting” picks.

And he agreed!

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Magic
Van Zandt-featuring 2007 collection, widely regarded as being inferior to 2002’s The Rising
“Call it employment insurance [laughs]. I do have to occasionally see the man, you know! Obviously I can’t be too objective about it. But I honestly believe that was a terrific album. I think it’s a great statement that at this stage of his career my friend is continuing to write songs that are vital and serious. I looked at the three records we did in the last ten years (The Rising, Magic and last year’s Working on a Dream) and that one had the most resonance for me. It just seemed to be the one that was the most consistent. But it was a close call. It could have been any three of them. They’re all quite good, I think!”

The Beatles: The Beatles Mono Box Set
Van Zandt’s coolest album of the last ten year’s is 2009’s stereo-free re-release of the Beatles back catalog. Is he being old-school-for-old-school’s sake? “No!” says the guitarist.
“My last five conversations with [Apple executive and "fifth Beatle"] Neil Aspinall, who we all love and miss, had to do with, ‘Please, Neil, I know you’’re busy,  but re-release the Beatles in the original configurations, in mono, the way God intended.’ He was finally getting that done when he died and Jeff Jones, the new guy over there at Apple, thankfully got it done. People don’t realize they’d spend all day on the mono mixes, and then usually George Martin would leave, and occasionally the first engineer would leave, and then the second engineer would throw up a quick stereo mix. They considered stereo a gimmick. Nobody took it seriously up until the last two albums or so. The mono mixes sound better, without question. They’re quite different. [On the stereo versions] there’s overdubs missing, there’s instruments missing. And that’s all that was available all these years. This was the way George Martin and the Beatles intended them to be heard!”

The Rolling Stones: “Rough Justice”
Lead single from the Stones’ 2005 album A Bigger Bang. “Honky Tonk Woman” it ain’t.
“My love of Stones albums ended with Exile on Main Street and I actually prefer the first seven, I prefer the Andrew Loog Oldham era even to the Jimmy Miller era. But I thought that was a fabulous single actually. The best thing they’d done in a long, long, time.”

Kelly Osbourne: “Come Dig Me Out”
This 2004 tune from the Oz sprog is a nicely high octane number. But does Kelly really count as garage rock?
“The song was quite a shock to me, actually. One of the people in the office was playing it, and I didn’t know who it was. It just caught my ear from across the room. The craft on that record alone is really quite good. The composition is great. The arrangement is great. And she does a great job singing it. It’s a great, great, record and I thought, well, she deserved to be on [the list]. We have a broad definition of garage rock. The British Invasion is what we consider ‘the Big Bang’, and we play everything that influenced the British Invasion, and everything the British Invasion influenced. It’s a bit eclectic. But when you really examine it, the dots are pretty well connected.”

The Chesterfield Kings: Psychedelic Sunrise
Steven Van Zandt placed the most recent studio collection by these somewhat obscure retro-rockers at number 4 on his coolest albums list, which must have really pleased their label boss. The name of that label boss? Steven Van Zandt!
“You’re right, most people would not know them, they just never quite broke thorough. But they pretty much define the modern contemporary garage rock world. And what’s nice is their last two albums have been their two best. (EW: And they also happen to be on your label!). They are now, yes. I’m sorry, do I have to put a disclaimer on this thing? I don’t mind some self-boostering. I don’t mind that at all. Especially since they deserve it. We wouldn’t sign them if we didn’t think they were great!”

THINGS WILL GET WORSE, THEY GOT TO GET BETTER…
Talk about your Blue Mondays. On January 25, the U.S. Justice Department’s Anti-Trust Division officially approved a “watered-down” version of the merger between ticket-sales agency Ticketmaster and concert-promoter/venue-owner Live Nation, creating a new company called Live Nation Entertainment.  (One of the better initial reports/analyses of the deal can be found here.)  In reality, there’s very little “watered down” from the original proposal first made a year ago, which essentially will solidify and strengthen what many considered to be a live-entertainment monopoly already since Pearl Jam et. al. unsuccessfully sought restrictions on Ticketmaster from the Anti-Trust Division back in the ’90s, during the Clinton presidency. Springsteen fans in particular should be appalled that not a single item in the “significant changes” ordered by the Justice Department even pretends to address the blatant conflict of interest that is Ticketmaster’s wholly-owned “secondary ticket market” (legal scalping) subsidiary TicketsNow, the source of so many problems for fans who attempted to buy tickets during the Working on a Dream tour last year.

Speaking of conflicts of interest, one of the other "concessions" that the new company surprisingly did not have to make allows it to keep its artist-management wing, headed by Irving Azoff, to boot. To understand just how anti-artist and anti-fan this move is, just remember that when Springsteen was forced to mount his famous lawsuit against former manager Mike Appel, Bruce's major source of revenue to sustain him and his band through that period came from their live performances. Any artist managed by Ticketmaster could be restrained from repeating such a strategy now, with the new company's increased power to control access to venues, ticket sales, etc. Even if you're an artist who's not directly managed by Azoff, if you don't like any aspect of how you or your audience get treated by Live Nation Entertainment, it now will be even more difficult, if not impossible, to oppose the company's policies and continue to make a living as a professional musician.

This latest action (or, more accurately, inaction) from the Anti-Trust Division comes in spite of the public opposition of many, including Bruce Springsteen, his management and touring organizations, and many of his fans who wrote letters, sent e-mails and/or made phone calls urging the Anti-Trust Division to stop this merger. As Springsteen's official website previously noted, "[T]he one thing that would make the current ticket situation even worse for the fan than it is now would be Ticketmaster and Live Nation coming up with a single system, thereby returning us to a near monopoly situation in music ticketing." Barring any significant actions from Congress or the President (who still could actively oppose the Anti-Trust Division's ruling if they chose to do so), it looks pretty certain now that we're headed further down that road.

News Updated February 5, 2010

MEATY BEATY BIG AND BOSSY
The Who shortly becomes the first act to perform at the Super Bowl Bridgestone Halftime Show after Bruce and the E Street Band's stellar performance last year. (Super Bowl XLIV will be broadcast live on CBS this Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. ET.) When I think about Springsteen/The Who connections, I think of Pete Townshend's famous quote about Bruce, specifically regarding Darkness on the Edge of Town: "When Bruce Springsteen sings on his new album, that's not about 'fun' — that's fucking triumph, man." Leave it to Shawn Poole, who emailed today, to go deep.

Shawn writes: "The connection starts early on in E Street pre-history, back when 'My Generation' was one of the only songs that young axe-wielder Bruce Springsteen sang onstage with The Castiles. It also remains as current as Working on a Dream's epic opening track, 'Outlaw Pete,' in which Springsteen directly echoed The Who's own epic Tommy, with each saga's main character repeatedly being asked, 'Can you hear me?' On the Working on a Dream tour, Bruce often performed 'Outlaw Pete' with classic 'windmill' guitar moves a la Pete Townshend.

"And now, at least for the next few days, Springsteen and The Who both will be bouncing off a satellite on their own separate Sirius/XM Satellite Radio channels. E Street Radio (Sirius 10/XM 58) continues its successful format of 24/7 Springsteen and just a few knob-twiddles away, The Who Channel (Sirius 16/XM 40) briefly joins the fun, celebrating their Super Bowl appearance by airing all-Who-all-the-time (including a live feed of Sunday's halftime show) through February 8. Beginning today at 2 p.m., the channel also airs an exclusive interview with Townshend and Roger Daltrey conducted by E Street Radio’s Dave Marsh, author of both Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story and Before I Get Old: The Story of The Who.

"Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band may have entered the Super Bowl Halftime performers' club first, but on the other hand, Townshend and Daltrey got their Kennedy Center 'rainbow ribbons with dreamcatchers at the end of them' before Bruce got his. Here’s another great way to celebrate the passing of the batons in both directions: Check out Daltrey's unique take on 'Born to Run.'"

COME ON, STEVE!
Keeping up with the Van Zandtses
Last night in New York, Steve Van Zandt appeared at the 92nd St. Y for an evening of discussion with NY1 anchor Budd Mishkin. Scott Black reports back:

It was a very informative hour and a half. Steve is devoting a lot of time to a number of projects, including the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, which is developing a History of Rock and Roll curriculum for all grades in all schools, scheduled to pilot in 2011. Some treasure nuggets from the talk included Steve saying that the E Street Band was going to take a “two-year break” from touring, and that Bruce is “in the greatest (physical) shape of his life.” Steve also spoke a lot about the Born to Run recording sessions. He told a lot of funny anecdotes about how his relaxed, indifferent commentary on the progress of the recording compared with the super-tense atmosphere among the record executives and band members, given the significance of the record to prolonging Bruce’s career. As you know, Steve was not in the band at the time, and he was playing in bars down by the Shore; he said he was making more money than Bruce, and would repeatedly taunt him to give up trying to make records and join him at his gigs so that he could actually earn a living. One particularly interesting story is that when Bruce played Steve the "Born to Run" riff, Bruce claimed he was bending the last note, but Steve heard it as a minor chord. When Steve complimented it, Bruce insisted there was no minor chord, and that he was bending the note. Steve retorted that Bruce wasn’t, and slowly everyone else in the studio came to hear it the way Steve heard it — which is how Bruce ultimately recorded the song.

Still no more definitive word on the 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' deluxe reissue, I presume?

Last gossip I read was that it should be out by early June (to coincide with the 32nd anniversary of it's original release)

Shaping up to be a great few months for expanded reissues of some of my favourite records - Exile, Darkness & Station to Station (although it's possible that EMI's appalling financial position may mean a postponement of the latter)

Well we'll have to settle for reissues. Since we have no live shows to go see. Cry
Plus the 2 year hiatus caught me off guard. I thought previously it was going to be 1.

Two years for the E-Street Band doesn't necessarily also mean two years for Bruce.

I would personally be very surprised if he does three ESB albums and tours in a row.

I think he'll do either a solo record or Sessions-type project in between. He's mentioned wanting to do both and about midway through the Magic tour hinted in an interview in Ireland at a possible solo record being next, as he had written quite a lot of 'storytelling' -type songs.
