Thanks for posting the article, Gazza.  That explains why Big Man was sitting on a stool  during the DC show.

I wish Big Man speedy recovery and great health.

Oh the horror. The Springsteen thread got pushed to page 2 What the fuck?...So to bump it back up. Let me post the wisdom and logic that is Jon Landau Wink:

AN UPDATE ON TICKETING ISSUES FROM JON LANDAU June 22
Somehow, a new flurry of interest has been created around Thrill Hill's ticket holds for the recent Izod Center shows. These are the same shows that became such a subject of controversy when they went on sale on February 2nd. The new theory is that Bruce's holds were the problem on February 2nd, and not Ticketmaster's already acknowledged failures on that day. But the truth is that Bruce's holds had nothing to do at all with the breakdown of Ticketmaster's system.

These are the undisputed facts about February 2nd. On that morning, when our fans went to buy their Bruce and Band tickets for the face value of $95, they were in many cases immediately linked to Ticketmaster's wholly owned ticket reselling company TicketsNow, where prices were many times higher than $95. We call this "bait and switch." As a result, an undetermined but large amount of money flowed into TicketsNow (and eventually Ticketmaster) even though there were still tickets at normal prices yet to be made available on Ticketmaster. We perceived this to have been a major abuse of our fans, complained about it mightily, and added that because of behavior like this, the pending merger of the number one ticketing company and number one management company (both owned by Ticketmaster) with the number one venue owner and operator (Live Nation) might not be such a hot idea.

How do we know that all this is true?

1. On February 2nd, when the ticket fiasco occurred, Ticketmaster's CEO wrote to Bruce, myself, and our fans to generously apologize, which apology we promptly and graciously posted on our site. The letter stated that the problem was the product of an inexplicable "glitch."

2. The volume of complaints received by New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram exceeded anything ever experienced before and she ultimately secured a consent degree from Ticketmaster, in which they promised that some of their practices ("glitches") with regard to its sister company TicketsNow will never be repeated.

3. The CEO of Ticketmaster openly testified as to their responsibility for these "glitches" in front of Committees of Congress.

Based on all of the above, we can safely conclude that on February 2nd, Ticketmaster transferred legitimate requests for tickets at face value over to their TicketsNow site, where they could charge people hundreds and hundreds more dollars for the same ticket. The amount of additional profit generated by scalper type prices through this now famous "glitch" remains unknown. Whether this was merely an extremely profitable "glitch" for Ticketmaster/TicketsNow or something else, we have no way of knowing.

Last Sunday, June 14, the Newark Star Ledger ran an article entitled "Springsteen withheld best tickets from the public at NJ concert, records show." This is the same article that the Star Ledger runs whenever we do a few indoor shows in New Jersey. It suggested that we were in someway responsible for the Ticketmaster/TicketsNow problem. On Thursday, June 18, Hits Magazine ran a summary of this article, On Friday, June 19, Ticketmaster's Chairman attacked Bruce personally in the New York Post, in an article called "Ticket Blitzkrieg." In this article, Ticketmaster's Chairman deploys by implication Ticketmaster's new line: despite their apology, despite the consent decree with Attorney General Milgram, and despite their testimony in Congress, the ticket catastrophe was actually Bruce's fault.

Of course, the only thing wrong with the Chairman's spin is that it's flatly untrue. He is merely using the time honored tradition of blowing smoke to distract attention away from Ticketmaster's already acknowledged responsibility for their "glitches" on February 2nd, the on-sale date of the two Izod Center shows.

Now lets talk a little about Thrill Hill's ticket practices. Perhaps the first thing to be said is that when we play New Jersey, our fans know that we are usually going to do more than two indoor shows in order to ensure, among other things, that during the course of a tour, Springsteen tickets will be plentiful so as many fans as possible will have a chance to get great seats (hence the five upcoming shows at Giants Stadium.) As our fans also know, we have kept all of our tickets under $100 and do all that we can to ensure that as many as possible are sold at face value.

Yes, we do hold significant numbers of tickets when we play New Jersey, New York and Los Angeles, as does every arena headliner. These holds are used by Bruce, his band members, and longtime members of his extended organization, their families and close relations; by the record label for their staff, for reviewers, and for radio stations; by charities who are provided with tickets for fund raising purposes, such as special auctions; for service people who help us on a year-round basis; and for other similar purposes. Unlike some Ticketmaster managed artists, no tickets are held for high dollar resale on TicketsNow, or through any other means.

Where are the Bruce holds? The 2,000 to 3,500 tickets closest to the stage are on the floor and more than 95% of them go to the public, making the basic premise of the Star Ledger headline inaccurate. Secondly, with regard to seats held in the best sections on either side, we always blend guest seats with fan seats so that there are never any sections consisting entirely of guest seats.

In addition, it is well known that we sometimes release a significant number of excellent tickets on the day of the show at the box office, which can only be bought with direct entrance to the venue. It's known as the "drop." Many think that is done on purpose to help combat the scalpers who prey on fans at the last minute. That is a good thought.

(Also, in connection with the Izod Center shows in particular, we released some of our holds to Attorney General Milgram to go into the lottery she created to help deal with people who were penalized by the Ticketmaster/TicketsNow "glitch" on February 2nd.)

Those are our ticket practices, as they have evolved over more than 30 years of experience. Does anyone seriously imagine that any element of these practices caused Ticketmaster to redirect ticket requests to TicketsNow for the Izod Center shows? What would our incentive have been? It's not we who earned vastly larger sums when fans paid way over the face value of the tickets. It was Ticketmaster/TicketsNow.

Final thoughts: We have no interest in having an ongoing conflict with Ticketmaster/TicketsNow or anyone else. That has not been part of our history. And it is generally not our purpose to spend time on this site on matters of this kind. But we do get upset when we see fans being taken advantage of, as they were on February 2nd. So, when that stuff stops happening (and the Ticketmaster/TicketsNow problems surrounding our recent show in Washington D.C. shows that these issues are far from resolved) we will stop complaining. And when the facts cease to be misrepresented, we will stop explaining.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Str…

1988 marked the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In an effort to raise world consciousness about human rights and of the plight of political prisoners worldwide, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour, and Tracy Chapman, embarked on the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour. The tour was an ambitious undertaking that criss-crossed the globe during September and October of 1988, where these artists performed before monumental crowds in Europe, Asia, Africa, as well as North and South America. This rollicking performance by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band was captured for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, recorded on the final night of the tour at el Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti, the home of Argentine footballing giants, River Plate.

The Boss and co. kick off the night’s activities with a lively cover of Bob Marley’s classic “Get Up, Stand Up,” just as they did on every night of the tour. Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Tracy Chapman join the group for the reggae classic. The powerful vocalists co-exist comfortably for a surprisingly tight, enjoyable performance, avoiding the vocal toe stepping that commonly takes place when rock stars share the stage.

The band returned to take the stage later on in the night to close out the concert. To kick things off, following a belted “1-2…1-2-3-4,” the group bursts into the famous melody of “Born in the U.S.A.” Though this was the last performance of a world tour, Springsteen’s voice shows no signs of weakness or strain.

From there, the classic group blasts through many of their greatest hits, electrifying the crowd with anthems like “The River,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Glory Days.” They also break out a punchy version of Edwin Starr’s soulful classic “War.”

One of the show’s standout tracks is “The Promised Land,” which is full of spirit and features a stunning solo by the great Clarence Clemons. “My Hometown” also carries a lot of weight, as Springsteen talks about his dreams of “creating a world without torture and disappearances,” without brutal dictators like Agosto Pinochet (Chile) and Anastasio Somoza (Nicaragua), before easing into the famous ballad.

The group closes the set with a powerful version of the Bob Dylan protest song, “Chimes of Freedom.” It is a hopeful way to end a special set that shows how much of a success the tour really was. Obviously, Springsteen has played many, many shows, but this is certainly one to cherish.

Born in New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen aimed at a folk career in New York City, but returned to Asbury Park, redefined his style, and found a place fronting the E Street Band on his way to a contract with Columbia Records in 1972. 1973 saw the release of his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., and established Springsteen as a songwriter as fine as the untouchable Dylan, but with working-class, identifiable roots that spoke of everyday heroes and man’s universal throes. A dispute with his manager silenced Springsteen for three years after 1975’s hugely successful Born to Run, and the issue released a logjam of creativity upon its resolution.

With the E Street Band, he released Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1978, The River in '80, and the brooding and beautiful Nebraska in '82. "Hungry Heart" from The River cemented Springsteen’s status as an international star. His abandonment of introverted lyrics for the exuberant sounds of Born in the U.S.A. in 1984 let him embark on a two-year, highly successful—and hugely publicized—tour.

Springsteen’s career has been characterized by its versatility and longevity, swinging from soulful introspection to plugged-in arena rock, group to solo efforts, and widespread touring to intense periods of writing. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, Springsteen reunited with the E Street Band to go on tour.

The shattering events of 9/11 sent the Boss back into the recording studio and led to The Rising, an eloquently honest message of hope wrapped in rock 'n' roll rhythms which earned multiple Grammy awards in 2003. Magic, released in 2007, also garnered rave reviews from critics and fans, and further cemented Springsteen's reputation as one of the finest and most accessible songwriters ever to grace the hallowed halls of rock ‘n’ roll.

according to Monday's  London evening newspapers, Jon Bon Jovi, was left bitterly disappointed in the wings, at Hard Rock Calling,
when his planned duet with Bruce, "Hungry Heart" had to be cut, due to time constraints and the strict Hyde Park curfew.

what a bummer for Mr Gazza.  Kiss my undercover ass you made a grown man cry Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

Well, I suppose for starters youd have to say its 27 songs as they did actually perform "Good Lovin' " in full. Bruce also guested earlier in the afternoon on '59 Sound' with Gaslight Anthem as he'd done at Glastonbury the day before.

To say he conquered the often cynical UK festival circuit over the weekend would be an understatement. The 90 minutes that the BBC showed of Glastonbury on Saturday night (even though it was delayed and hardly on at peak time plus the fact that they had multiple interactive channels and hundreds of staff present on their annual junket at the license payers expense, they reckoned that a 160 minute set from the headline attraction was "too long" to be shown in full) was an impressive enough appetizer for a highly energetic Sunday show at Hyde Park, which clocked in at about six minutes shy of three hours. (Although having read the above post, this may be the first time ever I've been to a Bruce show where I'm glad it didnt go on any longer than it did).

I really dont know where he gets the energy from. As he reminded us at one point, "I'm fuckin' SIXTY!". This was one of the best shows I've seen from him, and after a few shows early on the tour where I thought they were taking a bit of time to find their feet and pace things as they should and where I though his voice sounded like it needed a longer rest after the last tour, this show (my first this year) was very much on a par with last year's Magic tour (which I thought were the best shows I've seen since 1981).

Highlights were a great choice of 'London Calling' to open (I should have guessed he'd have started with that) which the crowd went nuts to, the superb 'depression'; trilogy about a third of the way through (Seeds/Johnny 99/Youngstown). a glorious 'Racing In the Street' where he managed to achieve the near impossible by keeping a raucous festival crowd paying rapt attention for about 9 minutes, a beautiful gospel flavoured arrangement of 'Hard Times' and what appeared to BOTH be unplanned performances of 'Rosalita' and 'Jungleland'.

The crowds really lapped it up. I was a bit dubious about him playing festivals but its great to see a crowd which has a higher percentage of first timers 'getting it'. I was at the Saturday night show at Hyde Park too (what a moment to see Macca singing 'A Day In the Life' with Neil Young) and the whole thing was easily the most enjoyable and best organised festival I've ever been at.

Bruce should definitely now have opening acts at his show. Whilst Glasto was a genuine festival where the tickets were sold prior to the acts being confirmed, Hyde Park on Sunday was basically a Bruce show with four opening acts. Surely preferable to getting into a pit early and then waiting four hours for the show to start with only barely audible piped music for company. This was a far more enjoyable way to wait for his set and its also a good way for him to properly champion acts like the excellent Gaslight Anthem to an audience who may not have previously been aware of them. They certainly won me over as a fan with that performance.

Nice Strummer cover. Did you see this?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009...er-glastonbury

At first I thought 'Coma Girl' a really odd choice of song to open with at Glastonbury, then listening to those lyrics yesterday on the way home about "playing a festival way out west' it made perfect sense.

Plus, Glastonbury is not only in the 'west country' but its actually in Somerset. The same county where Joe died in seven years ago.

I was crawling through a festival way out west
i was thinking about love and the acid test
but first i got real dizzy with a real rockin' gang
then i saw the coma girl, and the excitement gang

and the rain came in from the wide blue yonder
through all the stages, i wandered

oh coma girl, and the excitment gang
mona lisa, on a motorcylce gang
coma girl, coma girl

The coma girl was beating with the oil drum gang
some fast food fanatic was burning down a burger van
somebody was waling off their head
oh!
Nobody was rippin the teen scene dead

and the rain, came in from the wide blue yonder
i thought you and me might wander...

oh coma girl, and the excitement gang
mona lisa, on a motorcycle gang
coma girl, coma girl, on a motorcycle gang

And then the nineteenth hour was falling upon desolation row
some outlaw band, had the last drop on the go
lets siphon up some gas!! lets get this show on the road!!
said the coma girl, to the excitement gang
Into action , everybody sprang
and the oil drums were beating out, doolang, doolang

coma girl and the excitment gang
mona lisa on a motorcycle gang

Quite a few folks were apparently able to lip-read this onstage conversation off the Hyde park video screens at the finale of the show...

Steve - "One More?"

Bruce (shakes head) - "No. I'm fucked..."
