You think ? I know they did exactly that in '94 when they had the stiltwalkers and then they briefly had that daft thing on the No security tour when Mick was in a cage (which was very out of context on a tour which was intended to have things stripped down) but generally the stage concept or 'theme' has been an integral part of a tour from beginning to end - be it inflatables, on stage seating (or rather 'above stage standing' as it should have been called although they DID give that up as a bad job for the 2007 leg), b-stages, cherrypickers etc.

I can understand WHY they do it - because if they're playing some stadium the size of Wembley or the Maracana they want to give people 150 yards away something to look at - but sometimes it can take away from the music TOO much. I think most of us by now have seen it enough times and would prefer the shows to be stripped down and downsized a bit, though.

I dont think the Stones are quite at that level yet, although they're getting that way. Its certainly far more of an issue when putting their show together than it should be, however.

well mister, i guess we just have to agree to disagree...no biggie.  as far as i'm concerned...the stones have been all bells and whistles since steel wheels to a bigger bang.

:funny

Its certainly not a good thing.

If I knew what the hell you were talking about, I might have a suitable response, but if you think a spectacle is more important in a concert than the music, then I'd love to read why.

Yeah, like the cage in 'Out of Control' from the NS Tour.

Stones are still heavy on the spectacle, especially in stadiums.
I much prefer the pared down arena shows - more focus on the music.

IMO, one thing that continues to work indoors and out is the b-stage.

when it comes down to dealing with the stones...both are equally important.  bells and whistles are important to keep peoples interest.  you don't rent a stadium for a day for that amount of money just to see plain jane.  people pay lots of money and they want a nice night out.

the cobra thing was cool
the onstage thing was cool
the largest screen was cool [voodoo lounge] at the time
the large curtain deal for bridges to babylon was cool.

these are all bells and whistles

That was clever

Oddly enough lefty, thats one gimmick that I think is past its sell by date. Time was when they'd use the b-stage to play something interesting - like some blues or 'Midnight Rambler' and the like - now its pretty much 100% warhorses. A total waste of 15-20 minutes. Lets face it, if youre at the back of an arena or stadium and the Stones are ten feet in front of you, you shouldnt need them to be playing 'Honky Tonk Women' or 'Start Me Up' to make you go mental. They could be playing 'Popeye the Sailor Man' for all I care.

Ok, now I get ya. I guess then that youre suggesting Stones fans have a low attention span when it comes to appreciating music and need to get spoon-fed a 'spectacle' so that they can enjoy themselves. Not sure I think that's necessarily true. And like I said earlier, paying a shitload of extra money for a ticket and getting a fancy stage to look at in return isnt really a good trade off in my book. I couldnt care less if its a plain stage or something that looks like it descended from Mars - as long as I can hear the music properly, its well performed and I get a good view of the artist, I'm happy enough. Whilst some of those effects have been fun, I've never gone to a Stones show giving a shit what the stage looks like, but if other people feel its important, good for them.

don't deny yourself.  you mean to tell me you have walked into a stones show to see the simplest of stages.  somehow i just don't believe that...i believe that just as much as i believe you are wondering what the first song will be.  where is your sense of excitement?

The music of the greatest rock n roll bands in the world is my 'sense of excitement'. I'm in it for the music and always have been. Nothing else.

My favourite Stones shows of the 47 Ive been to have almost all been in theatres or small arenas - Shepherds Bush 1999, London astoria , The Point Theatre in Dublin and Wembley Arena in 2003. Why is that so difficult to grasp?

A stage in a stadium in Los Angeles is the same as a stage in Madrid. Whats to get excited about a few lumps of metal that are the same no matter where you see them? At least the performance changes from one night to the next.

That seems a very long show - surprisingly so this early in a tour. They tend to get longer towards the end.

I hope his voice can take the strain. It's sounded a bit rough at times on the first couple of shows I've downloaded

Well I've been there early early in the day and I've been there mid day and even towards the end of the lottery.  CCM , it is truly  "the luck of the draw."  I'm due to hit the jackpot this time though-been unlucky the last 2 times-LOL. I keep going back for more, as there really is nothing better than experiencing Bruce in the Pit (and standing for 5 hours!! Grin).  Although some of us do like relaxing near the soundboards! Wink

Wish you the best- put on your lucky face (clothes or shoes) and your Vegas smile!

It didn't seem that bad to me Gazza. I've listened to a little bit of the San Jose boot. Still seems fine. You want a rough voice, try listening to Roger Daltry sing these days. A moose in heat would sound better....But I digress Undecided

yeah, its a pity about Roger's voice - because Pete has been playing so great.

Bruce tends to take a few gigs to get the pacing of a show right. The 'Magic' tour didnt really kick in until after a couple of weeks. There's also a few gaps in this schedule to maximise the rest time between shows. He'll be fine I'm sure.

Well only 24 songs in Tulsa last night. But he has back to back and 3 shows in 4 days. So now he is pacing himself.

Austin's a favourite place for Bruce, and was one of the first places outside the north-east where he had an audience in the early 70's. He didnt play there on the Magic tour, so I think the 28-song setlist was a bit of payback.

On the Stones 2010, the 28 song set list will have to broken into 2 seperate nights.

Stones 2010:
14 songs. $590 tickets. You heard it here first.

I could see 2 nights, 2 totally different setlists with no repeats as the next gimmick. Saw the Pumpkins do that last year. The Stones could do that and still do a basic predictable hits oriented setlist.
