A recent Steve Van Zandt interview:

Last week Steve Van Zandt called up Rolling Stone to chat up his new record label Last Cathedral, which will focus exclusively on hard rock releases. “We decided to keep Wicked Cool a garage label and keep a real consistent identity,” says Van Zandt. “Lost Cathedral is going to be more the Led Zeppelin and AC/DC side of things rather than the Rolling Stones or British Invasion type of things.” The first release will be a new album by Crown Of Thorns, partially because Jean Beauvoir is the CEO of Van Zandt’s parent company Renegade Nation. Little Steven also delved into a number of topics, ranging from his upcoming tour with the Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band to why he thinks music has gone downhill since 1967 to rumors the E Street Band didn’t play live at the Super Bowl. Here’s Steve in his own words:

On rumors Bruce and the band played to a pre-recorded track at the Super Bowl: “I absolutely played live. If you were there, you could hear me fucking around before we started. Who knows what technical thing happens? We were there all week. Was there back-ups to the system in case something went wrong? Was something recorded? It’s very possible. I was singing live, I was playing live. That’s all I can tell you.

On the E Street Band’s forthcoming world tour: “We were going to start earlier then we said, ‘Wait, let’s stop a minute.’ We feel like we just got home. It was already the quickest two tours he ever done, and I think the quickest two albums. It got moved to the end of March now. Rehearsals start a week or two before. We’ll do our usual three days just to learn the new album, then off we go. The new songs are really quite good. It’s fun to keep cranking out new stuff at this high quality. At our age and position it’s kind of unique, huh? Most of the other people go out and play a song or two, we usually play most of the new album right away. I’m sure that will be the case here. What the other half of the show is, we’ll see.”

On the possibility of playing albums in their entirety on tour: “It could be something like that. We did that once for this benefit thing. It was an interesting thing to do. If I could pick, it’s gotta be The River. I’d want to include the outtakes on the Tracks collection. Then you have a hell of a show. You don’t have to do anything else.”

His advice for young bands: “I spent half my life convincing young bands to not skip that club phase, because they’re all skipping it now. The Beatles were a bar band for, what, four or five years? I tell bands, are you better than them? How do you learn how to play songs? If you can’t play someone else’s songs you can’t learn how to write songs. You can’t learn from listening to the fucking radio these days. You can learn how to be mediocre. That’s what we need! More mediocrity. Not only were the Beatles a bar band, they did covers for five albums after that! Stones too. People need to get a grip on how to do that. It’s a craft. It has to be learned. You aren’t born with it. Nobody is born great. Nobody. All of a sudden you have an entire two generations that don’t do it. They suffer for it. Once you don’t learn, you don’t learn. You may get better at your thing, but you’ll never be great.”

On his proposed TV show, Underground Garage Au Go Go: We’ve been working on a TV series for years and came very close. It’s probably my greatest frustration right now, by far. Three years in a row we came within five minutes of a network deal. They keep backing out at the last minute, they’re afraid of music on TV. They tell me it never works. I tell them, ‘I know why it doesn’t work — because it always sucks. How about we do a show that doesn’t suck? Let’s try that!’ We could do a fantastic TV show and I think that would change everything. It will completely focus this traditional rock and roll and contemporary garage rock movement and give it a face. The idea is to get a young host. The main thing we would do and what you’ve seen the last 30 years is that it will be kids dancing to rock & roll. I just feel that one day we were dancing to rock & roll and the next we started listening to it, and it’s been downhill ever since — somewhere around 1967 or so. I’m exaggerating only slightly. It may end up on cable. We may have to start it on the Internet, or a fucking cell phone. It’s something I’m determined to do. It needs it. It’s not something that’s an option. What we do won’t 100 percent make sense until we get that on.”

Agree.  Speaking of bar bands, I just acquired Steel Mill Live at the Matrix.  All I can say is -- wow.

Are all those songs Bruce originals?

More than likely. He was regularly writing for his various bands years before he ever got a record contract.

A bit of background to the songs from that era here :

Maybe you should make a road trip to Cleveland when Bruce announces his upcoming E Street show and his visit to the Rock Hall? (I've read he wants to visit the exhibit in today's paper)   We could even manage a "sporting event" (if the timing is right), in which you could see the great Cleveland athletic teams in action?!!! Grin   I know Leftie would be up for it!

From AP maven "Stan" @ btx:
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band began rehearsals today in Asbury Park for their upcoming "Working on a Dream" tour.
Today's rehearsal was at the Paramount Theatre.
Bruce worked on songs from the new album. Starting and stopping throughout.

Songs worked on today were:
1. Outlaw Pete. 2. My Lucky Day. 3. Working on a Dream 4. What Love Can Do and 5. This Life.

They worked on various parts of each song.
The new songs sound pretty good played live and should be nice when the concerts start.

A short rehearsal. Very quiet today around the boardwalk. Just myself and a couple other fans around.
Bruce left after 2 p.m.

Day 2 of rehersals, as reported by "Stan" @ btx.

Sorry for the late report today, the band didn't finish up til after 4 p.m. and then I had to go to work before I had a chance to get to a computer.

Fun day in Asbury Park, a lot of great music and it was nice to see Patti Scialfa join the rehearsals today.
Today again was at the Paramount Theatrer.

Most of the E Streeters arrived after noon, everyone commented how great Soozie looked.
Steve Van Zandt drove in and stopped and signed autographs and took pictures with the dozen or so fans waiting. Great job Stevie! Thank you. Steven also signed briefly on his way out today.
Bruce and Patti arrived together at 12:50 p.m. They also had a dog with them today, a German Shepherd.
As Bruce and Patti drove up the ramp, they both waved and smiled to the about 20 fans waiting, they did not stop though.

The music started shortly after:
1. Good Eye
Bruce worked on the bullet mic and the harmonica parts a lot. At one point he even threw a line in there from "The Jersey Devil" about being born the 13th child.
He did not play Jersey Devil though.
After about 20 minutes of tinckering about with it, they played it in full.

2. Life Itself
Real nice guitar work. They worked through different parts of the song a few times. I would assume that Bruce and Nils are the standouts on guitar here. Maybe Steven too.

3. Kingdom of Days
This was the "wow!" song of the day. Some pedal steel at the start. You could hear Patti on the backup vocaz.s
This is going to sound great live. At the end of the song, Bruce and Patti do a duet and as one fan today said "That was beautiful."
They played it three times. This is my favorite song on the new album and it was great hearing it performed today.

4. Surprise, Surprise.
They played it twice. Sounded pretty much like the album.

They took a 20-minute or so break before coming back with

5. Outlaw Pete
Started up with a pedal-steel sounding instrument. Bruce worked on a few parts of it and then they played it twice.
Sounded good. Will be powerful in concert.

6. This Life
They worked on the end "vocalizing" parts a few times. The parts I think sound like the Partridge Family. Others have said The Turtles.

That was it for the day.
Music ended around 4 p.m.

Steven came out first and signed for a few peopole.

Bruce and Patti left together at about 4:25 p.m.
They didn't stop to sign autographs but Bruce did drive slowly down the ramp and he waved and pointed to the about 30 fans waiting. A woman had two dogs on Patti's side of the car and she rolled down the window to see them.
My friend Catherine was able to give Bruce a pendant she had for him and he rolled down his window a little bit and took it from her and said thank you.

Jay Weinberg was there again today. So he could very well be Max's replacement when he can't make it to shows.
No Clarence today but he will be there next week.
We believe Charlie Girodano was there, but no one saw him yesterday or today, unless someone saw him leave after I left today.

About 30 fans around today. Security was great as usual.

I finally took the time to listen to the new CD. Thank you Meg for burning it for me!!!
Gotta say I enjoyed Magic a lot more.
There really wasn't one song, ala Radio Nowhere, Girls In Their Summer Clothes, that grabbed me.

Now am I insane (wait don't answer that!) or is there a riff in Outlaw Pete that sounds like a KISS song?
WTF is the KISS song I am thinking of??
Anyone else know what I'm talking about or agree with me????

LJ.
