Real, though only 75% of the house even went on sale  it looks like. Short tour, hitting mostly just major markets/strongholds and an overall limited amount of tickets available.

Bruce Springsteen Shows Taylor Swift Who's Boss

There's a reason they call him the Boss.

Bruce Springsteen just accomplished what eight weeks of challengers failed to do, namely knock out Taylor Swift from atop the Billboard 200. The Boss and his E Street Band took the No. 1 spot as Working on a Dream worked up 224,000 in sales for the week ended Sunday, per Nielsen SoundScan.

With his ninth chart-topper, Springsteen is tied with the Rolling Stones for the fourth most No. 1 albums of all time. The Beatles have the most with 19, followed by Elvis Presley and Jay-Z, both with 10.

The Boss' album clearly got a boost from Super Bowl XLIII hype. The Jersey rocker played an electrifying halftime set, which will have a further impact on next week's sales chart as the game averaged 96 million viewers.

While the Boss scored a touchdown on the charts, there was a yellow flag thrown over tickets for his upcoming tour.

Fans trying to buy tickets to his Meadowlands show from Ticketmaster.com received messages saying the shows were sold out and pushing would-be concertgoers instead to the company's ticket reseller TicketsNow, where plenty of seats were available at jacked-up prices.

Springsteen today issued a statement saying he was "furious" at the move. "We perceive this as a pure conflict of interest," Springsteen and the E Street Band said. "Ticketmaster is there to ensure that we have a good, fair sale of our tickets at their face value plus normal ticketing charges."

The rocker says he has a promise from Ticketmaster to stop redirecting fans to TicketsNow. But that's not good enough for a New Jersey congressman who is demanding that the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department investigate.

looks like Conan may soon have other issues to deal with....

CONAN O'Brien's drum ming sidekick, Max Weinberg, is not expected to be joining "The Tonight Show" when O'Brien takes over the show next month.

Weinberg, the longtime anchor of O'Brien's house band, The Max Weinberg 7, is also the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band.

It is understood that Weinberg, a father of two and a Newark native, rakes in bigger bucks from Springsteen and does not want to be forced to leave his south Jersey home for the move to LA.

He is also said to loathe the notion of giving up his season tickets for the NJ Devils.

As Conan's move to LA has been approaching, there have been published reports about Weinberg's attempts to sell 22 acres of his 40-acre estate in Middletown, NJ, to developers. The proposed sale is not sitting well with some neighbors and officials in Middletown Township, the story said. According to reports, Weinberg plans to keep his New Jersey home - where he lives with his wife and two children - while living at least part-time in the LA area.

Weinberg has reportedly been looking at homes in the LA area, but has apparently chilled on the idea. NBC officials say "Tonight Show" producers have not yet given up trying to woo Weinberg.

"The show would like him to [move] and we're trying to figure it out," a NBC spokesman says.

Weinberg could not be reached for comment yesterday.

On "Late Night," Weinberg is occasionally presented in sketches as a twisted character with sexual fetishes and homicidal tendencies.

Weinberg joined Conan back in 1993, reportedly after a chance meeting with the late-night host outside the Carnegie deli.

I disbelieve this Pitchfork article.

E Street Band Didn't Play Live at the Super Bowl, OMG
So what?

America's self-righteous obsession with real-time musical integrity never ceases to surprise me. We already know Jennifer Hudson and Faith Hill's Super Bowl performances were sung along with backing tracks, and now the Chicago Tribune reports that the E Street Band were playing to a pre-recorded track for their halftime appearance. Producer and Grammy Awards audio supervisor Hank Neuberger told the Tribune that Bruce Springsteen's vocals were the only live audio element of the show.

Potentially indignant fan: "Next thing you're gonna tell me Clarence was a hologram!" (We're almost positive Clarence was not a hologram.) Really, this is not a big deal. If you're seriously peeved by this news and feel absolutely betrayed, hear me out.

It's not like Jennifer Hudson can't sing "The Star Spangled Banner"; it's not like the E Street Band can't play "Born to Run". As the three (?) other Pitchfork readers who watch American Idol know, Hudson can sing pretty well. And, as the four (?) other Pitchfork readers who saw Dreamgirls can tell you, Hudson can do a mean version of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going", too. Guess what-- she didn't sing that live in the movie, either. It was dubbed. But it was still mighty effective. If you're still pissed at Hudson's Super Bowl backing track, why stop there in your quest for artistic honesty? Why not take that volume-enhancing microphone away from her too? Only a handful of listeners would be able to hear her...but it would be the real her. Please.

Of course, the E Street Band pre-taping seems more egregious because Springsteen is a pillar of all things non-phony. He tells it like it is, etc. But he's also a genius entertainer who knows that, as Neuberger told the Tribune, "there is no way you can set up a full band in five minutes with microphones, get all the settings right, and expect to get quality sound."

The trade-off is a great-sounding performance with Bruce keeping it relatively spontaneous (hello, Bosscocked!) versus a logistically inescapable shitty-sounding halftime show with sub-par music no matter how well Little Steven picks at his guitar. I mean, arguably the worst part of the performance-- that "guacamole" line-- was totally live.

The Super Bowl is a show, hence the emphasis on showmanship. It's not a Bruce Springsteen concert. If the halftime show got you excited, or if Hudson's performance got you a little tingly, those reactions are no less valid now that we know they weren't 100 percent live.

Worth noting: Looking back at Prince's Super Bowl halftime performance, I can't help but notice the lack of close-ups on his stunning "Purple Rain" guitar solo. In fact, dude is behind a fucking curtain for the whole thing. Was it pre-taped? Probably. Was it amazing? Definitely

It's funny how far his sycophants will go to justify his dishonesty. I myself don't have a problem with the backing tapes for Miss Hudson & the extremely dull Faith Hill but the "boss" & his crew acted like they were playing live & now it turns out that the only live thing was the incredibly bad voice? TOO FUNNY!

there's actually a bit of truth in that article, but a bit of distortion too.

From people who were actually there, they did seem to play live (theres enough flawed notes which would have been covered up had it been pre-recorded). The producers now seemingly insist on each act at the Superbowl pre-recording a backing track as a 'safety net' which they can mix up or down for the TV broadcast as they see fit because they reckon it's pretty nigh impossible to get the sound balance right in the short time they have to set up the stage.

the TV producers are responsible for what you hear on the broadcast

Nonsensical stuff, but thats TV for you. Its a Tv show, not a mini-concert.

Springsteen bashes Ticketmaster

By JASON MacNEIL - Sun Media

While concert goers are increasingly at the mercy of Ticketmaster’s TicketsNow resale website regarding purchasing tickets for big-name acts, Bruce Springsteen is taking up the cause for his own devout followers.

And it appears he’s already made some headway.

Earlier this week, when tickets for Springsteen and The E Street Band’s shows in New Jersey went on sale, fans going to Ticketmaster’s website to buy tickets were instantly redirected to TicketsNow, a page which resells tickets for up to several times face value.

In a letter posted on the musician’s website Wednesday, Springsteen condemned the practice, saying he and his management were unaware Ticketmaster were “in effect ‘scalping’” tickets through its TicketsNow site.

“They did this even when other seats remained available at face value,” the letter, written by Springsteen, Jon Landau and “the entire Springsteen tour team” said. “We condemn this practice.

“We perceive this as a pure conflict of interest. Ticketmaster is there to ensure that we have a good, fair sale of our tickets at their face value plus normal ticketing charges. TicketsNow is supposed to be a secondary site where people who already have tickets may exchange, trade, and, unfortunately, speculate with them.”

The letter added that this method of selling tickets, at least to future Springsteen concerts, will not happen again.

“The abuse of our fans and our trust by Ticketmaster has made us as furious as it has made many of you. We will continue to do our utmost now and in the future to make sure that these practices are permanently curtailed on our tours.”

Late Wednesday evening, Ticketmaster Entertainment CEO Irving Azoff responded in a letter by apologizing to Springsteen, his management and fans. Azoff also added that in the future, “we will not present an option to go to TicketsNow from Ticketmaster without the consent of the artist and the venue, both of whom work together to bring the joy of live entertainment to millions of fans.”

The company also agreed to refund the difference for any fans that purchased tickets off TicketsNow believing they were purchasing them from Ticketmaster.

Springsteen’s lone Canadian date is at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on May 7. Tickets for that show, $67.50 and $115, go on sale at noon tomorrow (Friday) through Ticketmaster.

That sounds like a logistical nightmare, especially for a rock band. Does that mean they have to play with earphones & follow some kind of metronome/backing track ?

Since they obviously have the money, wouldn't it be possible to have several soundboards w/microphone sets (then they'd do the soundchecks in the morning and just plug in a different soundboard for each band) ? Just curious.

I've no idea, Caro - however it just emphasises that when you're the half time sideshow at a sporting event - especially one where ratings is such a big deal - then you're not really a major priority. Which isnt really a big surprise, to be fair. Its all about the spectacle more than the substance, after all. No big deal.

Funny, I was thinking that too. As I'm sure you're aware, those shows featured backing tracks as well. The bands didnt play at all, and only the vocals were live. It seems that when it comes to rock 'n' roll, nothing much has changed on prime time US TV for 50 years.

Springsteen is a huge fav of mine. And he's so great live. But am I only one who thought he piled on the ham & cheese a little too much at the Super Bowl performance??

I proudly ordered the bartender to crank up the sound when he came on but by the time that Joey came out dressed as the referee and threw a penalty flag at him I wanted to crawl under my bar stool and hide

in retrospect, I'm so glad that the Stones just came out and played at the SB and didnt try to camp it up like that

If Chuck weren't around, Keith and Ronnie would need to have an E Street backing tape for the entire tour Smiley
