Downloaded the new album off demonoid last night and have got to hear it a few times (albeit in mp3 format) since.

Even allowing for the diversity of Bruce's last few albums, this is an unusual record musically. More reliance on strings at times than guitars. Most of the songs clock in at around three minutes with the opening track, an eight minute epic called 'Outlaw Pete' being totally different in feel, length  and lyrical style to what follows.

Strikes me that it's going to be a grower more than a record that a lot of people will love instantly. Some songs I still cant quite warm to (I cant see what appeal some people find in 'Life Itself' so far) but there are some that jump out at me straight away.

Outlaw Pete - In short - the best opener on any Springsteen album since 'Badlands'. A glorious return to the style of his early story telling epics. An often amusing Western yarn with about five changes in tempo over it's eight glorious minutes. With the church bells, atmospheric harmonica and soaring strings, two words spring to mind - Ennio Morricone. All that's missing is Claudia Cardinale. Absolutely majestic.

Good Eye - a terrific bluesy romp which sounds a bit like a cross between "Spare Parts" and the live version of 'Reason to Believe' from the 'Magic' tour. Killer harmonica playing on it. I can see now why they omitted the bonus track 'Night with the Jersey Devil' from the original track listing for the album, as they're a bit similar. This is better, though - and probably the bluesiest song he's released until now.

Tomorrow Never Knows - Shortest song on the record (2:17) and one which will probably be the most overlooked. Personally, I love it. Gorgeous little toe tapper in the style of 'Early Morning Rain' which convinces me further that Bruce has a great country album in him. Short but sweet.

The Last Carnival - If 'Gypsy Biker' was a sequel to 'Shut out the Light', then this is a sequel to 'Wild Billy's Circus Story' and - appropriately as Danny Federici was all over the earlier track - a song that is unquestionably a fond farewell to his band mate. Very poignant stuff at times ("we wont be dancing together on the high wire/facing the lions with you at my side anymore" and "we'll be ridin' the train without you tonight/the train that keeps on movin', it's black smoke scorchin' the evenin' sky") which closes with a choral finale which is absolutely eerie and then is followed by about a 20 second silence before the bonus track, "The Wrestler" kicks in.

The Last Carnival

Sun down, sun down
They're taking all the tents down
Where have you gone my handsome Billy?

Sun down, sun down
The carnival trains leave town
Where are you now darling Billy?

We won't be dancing together on the high wire
Facing the lions with you at my side anymore
We won't be breathing the smoke and the fire
On the midway

Hanging from the trapeze,
My wrists waiting for your wrists
Two daredevils high upon the wall of death
He throws the knife, it lands inches from my head
Sun down

Moon rise, moon rise
The light that was in your eyes is gone
Daybreak, daybreak
The singing you had made me ache is gone

We'll be riding the train without you tonight
The train that keeps on moving
Its black smoke scorching the evening sky
Millions of stars shining above us like every soul living and dead
It's been gathered together by God
Sing a hymn over your bones

Sun down, sun down
Empty are the fairgrounds
Where are you now handsome Billy?

I had tried to post earlier today that I couldn't wait either- (although a paid copy will come in the mail end of Jan)!!!

Had planned to listen to it today at work- no such luck!!

After two  complete listens I've gotta say, I pretty much agree with Gazza about the entirely different style of this record.  I am really enjoying the "orchestral" sound.  There are some really great moments- Outlaw Pete, Good eye, Tomorrow Never Knows, and The Last Carnival.  Gazza's review pretty much says it all and he says it so much better than me anyhow!   I am not including The Wrestler, as it stands alone on it's excellence.

One song that has me entirely enthralled is "Queen of the Supermarket"- a pure work of genius!!  I shake my head in wonder at the talent of this man to write a meaningful song about the supermarket- the ordinary things of life!!" Grin

Definitely think the rest of the songs are "growers" and maybe just a tad too short for Bruce productions.

Oh.. a keeper by golly and a record that will be played over and over. Cool

At first I wondered how these songs would hold up under live performance.  Now I think they will be even better...

P.S.  There is no "political" message in this great album.  Just Bruce doing what he does best-writing about life......

Apparently, Danny Federici's son Jason plays on "The Last Carnival". Very fitting.

Nice review Gazza ~ I'll be making my purchase on Jan 27. It will probably be sold everywhere because I've seen Bruce's posters and signs in several record store windows in the shopping malls. This is Jersey, man, lots of Bruce fans here, it's home of The Boss and we're damn proud of it!

Bruce Springsteen leaks: The new album is out there

Jan 13, 2009, 02:01 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: Music, Waiting, Web/Tech

Last night brought a surprise for Bruce Springsteen fans: Right around dinner time, his album Working on a Dream leaked online all at once, two weeks before its scheduled Jan. 27 release date. I'm not about to provide any links to pirated music, but I hear that those so inclined shouldn't have much trouble finding this. Now, as it happens, I already wrote a review of Working on a Dream for the issue of EW that will hit stands on Jan. 26. So with these songs already spreading like wildfire, I just want to make it known that this album is absolutely one worth waiting to buy on release day.

I love Working on a Dream. I say that based on hearing the proper CD, not some random digital rip, and I have a feeling most Springsteen fans will come to agree. It's very different in tone from the last two records Springsteen has made with the E Street Band: Personal rather than political, subtle gestures rather than grand statements. What's more, you can just tell it's the kind of album that will reveal more of itself the more you listen. I can't wait to really dig into Working on a Dream in the weeks and months after I get my hands on a physical copy.

All that said, have any of you caved to temptation and heard the leak yet? If so, what's your favorite song so far? Mine at the moment is "My Lucky Day," which those of you who are staying strong and waiting for the actual release date (bravo!) can enjoy in the Boss' official promo video below. It's a real sugar rush of a tune in the best way, don't you think?

I found my early copy of Magic just yesterday.
I recall when the lp came out, I was indeed disappointed a bit.
Now, I will wait for 1/26, run to the store, purchase it.
Just like the old days....that rush of waiting was always just like the first.. smoking more weed is good for your health

Arent cds normally 'sold everywhere'? Or do you mean some Walmart exclusive? Theres a new greatest hits CD out this week which for some reason is only sold in that store. A bizarre move on Bruce's part

Wasnt really a review, but thanks all the same.

Quick synopsis after a few listens :

Outlaw Pete - An epic masterpiece. Cant stop listening to it. 'Can you hear me...?'
My Lucky Day - pretty good rocker. One of the few bonafide rockers on the album.
Workin' On A Dream - Bruce-by-numbers. Charming but lightweight. Needs another verse
Queen of the Supermarket - Filler
What Love Can Do - Solid. Will probably be a grower.
This Life - Liking this one more & more. Sounds very Brian Wilson influenced. Gorgeous arrangement.
Good Eye - a gem.
Tomorrow Never Knows - likewise, but over too soon.
Life Itself - good lyric, but a half decent melody might have been a good idea.
Kingdom of Days - see 'What Love Can Do'..
Surprise Surprise - catchy tune, but no more than filler. Forgettable.
The Last carnival - superb, eerie and moving. The backing voices are absolutely haunting.

Bonus track - The Wrestler - Oscar #2 beckons. A fucking gem.

Sometimes CD's and DVD's are NOT sold everywhere. Some examples are Stones 4 Flicks was sold only at Best Buy, or Walmart only for AC/DC, or Starbucks only (I think this was McCartney) then others are sold everywhere, which is better IMO.

yeah, I thought that's what you meant. You're correct about the McCartney album.

This is the new greatest hits Walmart only album (US release only in other words)

...

Credited to the E-Street Band, which is unusual. Track listing :

1. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
2. Born to Run
3. Thunder Road
4. Darkness on the Edge of Town
5. Badlands
6. Hungry Heart
7. Glory Days
8. Dancing in the Dark
9. Born in the U.S.A.
10. The Rising
11. Lonesome Day
12. Radio Nowhere

Big division on the Bruce forums about the merits of someone of Bruce's 'image' doing an exclusive deal with a company with such a negative reputation regarding it's employees, but there you go. Certainly a head-scratching decision which hasnt as yet warranted any comment from him or his management.

Great cover though.

Yeah nice cover. Would have liked to see that on WOAD. But the greatest hits release is just fluff. Apart from the merits of the exclusive Wal-Mart deal. Off the top of my head,I know at least half of those songs were released on the first GH album. What, did he owe the record company an album or something?....But he does appear to be going all out to promote himself......So bring on the fucking tour already. Maybe instead of playing at halftime of the SB. He can just hold a 12 min press conference and announce tour dates. What the fuck?

I'm assuming its some kind of contractual obligation as part of that megabucks deal he inked with Sony a few years back (he trousered something like $65 million in a deal whcih will run for about ten years and basically allows him to put out some archive projects, 'vanity' releases as well as the occasonal mainstream/ESB record. Nice work for a guy in his late 50's).

Cant see any other reason, especially as we had a two-CD 'Essential' album in late 2003 (with a bonus disc). Still, he's been mega prolific this decade - 5 studio albums since July 2002, the excellent BTR and Hammersmith archive releases, Live in dublin, touring endlessly - and he's kept up a career-long trend of NEVER doing two similar styled studio albums in a row (very easy to be tempted to do that when you know that certain types of albums will sell by the shitload), so I guess we can't complain too much. Can't think of any artist around who has released four such diverse sounding records in a row - and within the space of four years.  Seems a long way away from the days when he'd take two years to make an album, procrastrinate for months over shit like the album cover picture (see 'Darkness') and would throw away about 6-7 songs for every one he'd use.

Have to say I dont care for these promotional tie-ins to plug the new record, though. Superbowl, Walmart etc. Ugh. He resisted pandering to the 'casual' fan for decades so why start now. At least the concerts won't be like that. Bring them on.

Doubt the pandering has much to do with him, Gazza.  Music labels ain't making any money and they are doing whatever it takes to rake in a few bucks. Sad situation for the music industry.  And even tougher on the artists..  I'm just glad Bruce is still "creating" good music and we both know the concerts won't be affected by this music industry bullshit. Cool Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

He can pander all he wants but he'll never be as big again as he was in 1984/5. The market has changed & his stuff won't be played on the radio like it was then. This new album won't be #1 for more than a week if it even attains that status.

Eh, either the music stands on its own merits or it doesn't. Everything else is bullshit. As for Working On A Dream, early listenings leave me with nine songs I really like (tracks 1,4,5,6,7,9,10,12,13), three I'm on the fence about (tracks 2,3,8), and one I find unlistenable (track 11). It's only been a couple of days though, so that could change. I'm not too crazy about all the synthesizer on this album (some of these songs sound like he sat down with an old Casio and just beat em out). There are times when it creates a veritable "wall of sound," especially on "Outlaw Pete" - a song I love for lots of reasons, but on which I also hear the riff to KISS's "I Was Made For Lovin' You"...*shiver*. Don't know how all this will translate live, but I aim to find out.

Little Steven Interview in Esquire:
http://www.esquire.com/features/what-ive-learned/steven-van-zandt-quotes-0109

Steven Van Zandt: What I've Learned

The entertainer riffs on The Boss vs. the boss, Pink Floyd vs. "Louie Louie," and European vs. American music fans.

By Ryan D'Agostino

Raised on the Jersey Shore, the E Street Band guitarist played Silvio Dante on HBO's Jersey-based The Sopranos.

You gotta have cinnamon in your coffee. Pour it on.

The Super Bowl — they ask us every year, literally for twenty-five years. Since Born in the U.S.A. You can only do it once, I guess. You want to save some things.

Here's the wonderful thing that Bruce Springsteen and David Chase are capable of: Those two guys have the remarkable talent of transporting you to their own time zone, to their own rhythm, and slowing things down. That's an extraordinarily important talent these days, when everything is temporary and disposable and going by at a hundred miles an hour. In the old days, they would have been called wizards, because they control time.

Scandinavia is another planet. They get health care, education, there's no homeless, they barely have a prison system. We joke about how they're overtaxed, but it's the same fucking 50 percent I'm paying.

Art is not a luxury.

I remember when flying was fun. When did we become a Third World country? What day was that?

February 8, 1964, there was not one single rock 'n' roll band in the country. February 9, the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan Show. February 10, everyone had one. In the garage. "Garage rock" is traditional rock 'n' roll. If you think of it as the early Stones, you're fine.

My life began on February 9, 1964.

To have impact in two minutes and thirty seconds — that's very hard to do. It's much easier to write Pink Floyd's The Wall than it is to write "Louie Louie."

The history of rock 'n' roll is the history of America in the twentieth century.

Bruce wasn't gonna get a third shot. His first record did like ten thousand, second one did like twenty thousand, and they were just done with him. And somehow, by sheer willpower, that song got done — four or five months recording one song. Turned out to be worth it. They sent it out without the record company even knowing, and a couple of big rock stations picked up the song, the "Born to Run" song.

People got upset when we'd start playing bigger places. But you can either play sixty nights in the club, or you can play the arena. Hmm, let me think.

I modeled the role on The Sopranos after my real role in life with Bruce. You'd see Silvio have to deliver bad news, Tony Soprano would get totally angry, and guess what? That's part of the job of being the consigliere, or being the best friend in real life. The main job of a producer is telling the artist the song's not good enough yet. You try to be as truthful as you can be without being insulting. And then you get past it. I enjoy doing that.

Every successful person needs to have at least one person in their life who's not afraid of them. That you gotta give Bruce credit for, because it's easy to surround yourself with people who don't know your character flaws and you can pretend to be God.

Nebraska was written and recorded as a demo. He played it for me, and I said to him, I think you should put it out as is. He said, What are you talking about? It's just demos. I said, Because you didn't intend to put it out makes it extraordinarily intimate. Eventually, he agreed and they put it out.

We have no place for greatness in our society anymore. Is there no talent, or is there no infrastructure to support talent?

I remember a kid running into band rehearsal one day, in '68 or so, and saying, You're not gonna believe this, but Rod Stewart is white! We said, Get outta here. We didn't believe him. There was just not that many places you could see pictures of people. There wasn't MTV. And we never heard any white person sing like that. We knew he was black.

Immediately upon working for fifteen years to make it, as soon as we make it, what do I do? I leave, right before the Born in the U.S.A. tour. Everybody bought houses off that tour. I'm in Africa with an eleven-piece that I'm paying for, using my little money to keep a band on the road talking about politics.

I learned everything I know from leaving the E Street Band. And of course, one of the things I learned is, I never should have left.

The Beatles were a band, which we had never seen before. Four guys working together. Brothers. I had no interest in being Elvis Presley. We thought the Beatles were best friends. We thought the Stones were best friends. We bought the illusion, and it's the illusion that matters sometimes. That's what makes art work; that's what makes religion work.

Believe me, your parents would have preferred that you be a criminal — anything more respectable than a rock 'n' roller.

We are all suffering from a terminal time-deficit disorder. What'd you do today? I don't know, but I had no time for it.

I believe that hundreds of years from now, history will be divided into pre-1960s and post-1960s. Questioning things as a regular part of normal life — that didn't exist for my father's generation.

I ran out of money every year for the last thirty years.

Little Richard opens his mouth, and out comes liberation.

In Europe, everybody in the audience has the new record before they come to the show. Why? Because that's the script of the stage production they're about to see and participate in. They come, and they all sing every word of every song. They don't move, they don't go to the bathroom, they don't order hot dogs.

I've had offers through the years to write a book, but I don't feel that I've quite done enough yet. I got some big ideas left.

He can pander all he wants but he'll never be as big again as he was in 1984/5. The market has changed & his stuff won't be played on the radio like it was then. This new album won't be #1 for more than a week if it even attains that status.

Thank fuck hes not as big as 84-85. Nor does he need to be. He's 59 for fucks sake.

His last album reached #1 despite not being played at all on the radio.

Get over it.

Get over it? I actually bought it the week it was #1. That said, it's really not that good. It's got a great lead-off single & then bleh.

I have to disagree, Glenny.

It's a great album. I was on a road trip Monday and played it beginning-to-end in the car. It was the first time I'd listened to it  in a few months and I remembered why I liked it so much when it came out. Thoroughly enjoyable.
