Title: UNDERCOVER: 500 ROLLING STONES COVER VERSIONS THAT YOU MUST HEAR! (BOOK)
Post by Sleepy City on Nov 10th, 2022 at 3:40am
Hi all,

My thanks to Gazza for inviting me to the forum (I used to be on IORR for years under the same user name but for some reason my account disappeared).

Anyway, I've just published a new book, see below.

UNDERCOVER: 500 ROLLING STONES COVER VERSIONS THAT YOU MUST HEAR!

by Peter Checksfield

Mick and Keith learned fast. Initially Rhythm ‘n’ Blues purists who believed that only ageing black Americans could write decent songs, they released their first original song ‘Stoned’ (a group-composed near-instrumental) as the UK B-side of their version of Lennon-McCartney’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ in November 1963; within 18 months they had written and recorded ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’, and had become The Beatles’ biggest musical rivals. Now that is fast!

In the 60 years since they started, there have been thousands of Rolling Stones cover versions. Music historian Peter Checksfield listened to most of them (so you don’t have to), and came up with the best 500, in a staggering variety of genres: Rock, Blues, Soul, Garage, Psych, Prog, Beat, Reggae, Ska, Pop, Funk, Disco, Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Glam, Metal, Punk, New Wave, Indie, Gothic, Grunge, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Bossa Nova, World, Gospel, Electronica, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, even Cabaret, Polka and Classical.

Also included are a mammoth 130 exclusive interviews with many of the musicians involved. Which former Rolling Stone recorded ‘Play With Fire’ in the 90s? Who’s favourite album is ‘Jamming with Edward’? What legendary Punk group wanted to cover the entire ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’ but ran out of time after 1 song? Read on…

Thanks, Peter and welcome.

Book looks really interesting and is certainly something different. I dont envy you having to listen to some horrible covers as well as the really good ones!

Best of luck with it!

Thanks Gazza!

It was hard going at times, but I stumbled across some interesting ones too.

Subtle as a sledgehammer, but impressive:

This sounds a bit like David Bowie:

One of the best covers from the 80s:

Hillbillies from Hell?

I think this has the edge over the Stones' original:

(This cracked me up as per the recently opened thread about this very phenomenon...)

Really interesting concept you haver there...I look fwd to this...I am assuming these are all covers that have been officially released, but I will find that out once I read it...I say this because as a former Deadhead (are you ever really a former Deadhead??), the Dead are famous for their version of The Last time,(played 69 times) an occasional Satisfaction (31 times)and a one-off of Off The Hook in 1965.

Congrats and best of luck!!
What's the next project gonna be???

Not sure what happened on IORR. I'm never particularly rude or controversial, apart from "My Obsession" with BTB! Can't be bothered to re-sign (though if anyone wants to mention this book on there they're more than welcome!).

Yes, I've only featured officially released versions, including Spotify and Bandcamp as well as vinyl/CDs/etc. The only Grateful Dead-related song in the book is NRPS's 'Dead Flowers' (though a couple of interviews reveal others with GD influences).

As for next? A few weeks break!   :)

I love covers, sometimes are better than original, even for the Stones, that a few are better... in the case of Dylan and Donovan, sorry to say this but many times the cover is better; I think it was a hard work to reduce the list to 500, will check later your book

Great you have Merry Clayton on the cover of your book! I made this website with her blessings CLICK

There ain't no covers of her music there, but I made this website with covers (and more) for Donovan, now with 31 more to add this weekend, CLICK

Thank you.

Here's one which I think has the edge over both RS versions:

We do not know if or when this product will be available again.

Some artists I just HAD to include! Merry Clayton, Marianne Faithfull, Chris Farlowe, Ike & Tina Turner, The Mighty Avengers, etc.

Chris Farlowe has 7 entries in the book, more than anyone else (just behind him is Jerry Lee Lewis with 5, and Marianne Faithfull has 4 songs).

Even Bill Wyman is in there:

Which former Rolling Stone recorded ‘Play With Fire’ in the 90s?

Did anyone guess the answer? It's...... Dick Taylor!   ;)

The Pretty Things did a fabulous version of 'Play With Fire' for a 1999 album, one of my very favourite Stones covers:

I did a zoom interview with a guy in Australia today, for anyone interested (though we ended up chatting more about 'Ready, Steady, Go!' than the book!):

I was asked by the excellent 'Strange Brew' website to come up with my top FIVE Stones covers, not easy!

This one seems a popular choice:
