Title: Mick's Voice in 2018
Post by StonedInStatenIsland on May 22nd, 2020 at 10:03am
Hey all, been a minute since I've posted, hope everyone is well.

I was listening to some 2018 shows and I noticed that especially in the first few gigs Mick's voice really gave out near the end in a way I never heard it do before. The "Gimme Shelter" performances from London 2 and Manchester are great examples. Mick started these gigs strong but by the end his voice suddenly lost all its elasticity and he sounded like he was chewing peanut butter and singing at the same time. I know he was 74 but I've never heard him sound this worn out before. Did he have nodules? Was he sick? Just curious.

He was still highly convincing live (not bootlegged) in 2015, but I don't think his voice has measured up to that since the surgery.

He had problems with nodules in 2003, I believe.

When they had to postpone a few shows towards the end of the European tour that summer, he was told that he shouldn't  do back to back shows anymore, and he hasn't done so since then.

There were tentative plans to extend that tour into 2004 which didn't happen, so it's probable that he may have had some treatment. There's no record of him having sung again for about six months until he started work on the 'Alfie' soundtrack.

Who's voice wouldn't crack just a little by the end of the day if Florence W had been shimmering around and around in a Nightie, her vastus lateralis and gluteus maximus playing havoc with all rhyme, reason and silken material??

Apart from that, Florence so overrated.

I personally disagree with this. I thought Mick sounded the best he had in a long time in 2019. Not just the quality of his voice but his delivery had a lot more conviction in it. "Gimme Shelter" is a great example, he no longer rushed the phrasing (listen to how he phrases "threatening last year to, say, 2015), plus there are a few versions where he sings the lyrics 100 % correct!

Just luck of the teleprompter being close by, IMO...

I think he sounds fine, but I don't dissect the shows to that point...unless its really noticeable.

MICK gives it his ALL whenever he puts on a show, Never heard him sing a bum note. Voice is holding up way better than his colleagues - McCartney's voice is shot, so is Axl Rose, Dylan`s voice is gone, Daltry cant hit the high notes anymore, Brian Johnson from AC/DC's voice is a total wreck, Steve Perry from Journey - done, Mercury, Prince, Michael Jackson and Bowie - dead.  Plant can still hold a tune fine as can Billy Joel and Elton John is still holding up well. Springsteen and Bon Jovi are still good but not as good as they were.  Only MICK's voice remains perfect from many years of perfecting his craft.  ;D

Not so much no more, nah.  It was a shock to me how little he was able to do with "Mercy, Mercy" most recently.
