Title: lost Top of the Pops 1969 performance of HTW surfaces
Post by Gazza on Nov 21st, 2018 at 5:28am
Long lost footage of the Stones’ performance of their final UK number one single, taped for Top of the Pops on 3rd July 1969, a few hours after Brian’s death.

Footage comes from a Swiss TV broadcast in September 1969

Thanks, Gaz !

Morbid curiosity has me asking, were the Stones aware of Brian before recording this ?

yes. Brian was found dead on the evening of the 2nd July(although for some reason its always commemorated as the 3rd).

the band were recording in Olympic Studios when they got the call - supposedly it was during sessions for  'I Dont Know Why'

the TOTP taping took place was scheduled for the 3rd. They went ahead with it -  I've always read that they had images of Brian erected behind them during the taping but there's none visible here.

however nzentgraf.de lists that they cut 2 versions - one was broadcast on BBC1 on 10,17 & 31 July and the other shown on 7,14 & 21 August.

The broadcasts have long been wiped by the BBC. Note that there is a performance of HTW which some people attribute to july '69 but it was actually recorded on 12th December for the Christmas Day special (the dead giveaway is Jagger's outfit which was unveiled during the November-December US Tour and on the Ed Sullivan Show in November).

Note that the December broadcast is in colour. While BBC2 first broadcast in colour in 1967, BBC1 didnt do so until November 1969.

They also taped 'Gimme Shelter' the same day for the BBC special 'Pop Go the 60's' which aired on 31.12.69
