Title: Tribute bands
Post by Starbuck on Oct 1st, 2018 at 7:16am
Just played a tribute band festival this weekend in Seaside Heights NJ. We had a Fleetwood Mac tribute band called Tusk that opened for us, and let me tell you - absolutely amazing. The vocals in that band were on a level I've not seen in the ten plus years I've been playing in bands. Not sure where they are based, but if you get the chance, check these guys out. I play in a Petty tribute, and their Stevie hopped up on stage during our set and did "Stop Draggin My Heart Around". She was incredible, and very nice. Check them out if you can! The only downside I saw was that their Mick looked a bit too much like General Zod's henchman from Superman II.

Played another gig at a casino in Atlantic City last summer with a Police tribute band out of NYC called "New York's Finest". Wow. If you live in the City and haven't seen these guys, you are missing out!

Not really into "tribute" bands but I attended a festival over the weekend that included a Beatles trib band.

These guys played an entire set costumed as the Sgt. Pepper characters in 80+ degree heat.

Wouldn't want to be near these guys after a gig!

I have enjoyed a few of these bands over the years. Some are very good. Some though give the impression they think its "real". Ever see the Joey tribute band? The Toilets kick ass!

The concept of a Joey tribute band is not possible. See, tribute bands perform the works of artists who 1) have their own material, and 2) are worth listening to. Both of those points remove the possibility of a Joey tribute artist's mere existence in the first place.

Never liked Tribute Bands.
To me it's nothing but horrible to see them try acting, sounding and even looking like the originals.
No matter how good the musicians may be.
It's just crap to me.

Phil, you need to rethink your position on tribute bands. First off, they are cheaper to get in to see.....and many of the artists being mimicked are no longer around for you to hear....plus, as a musician, it is awesome because you basically enjoy every song you play and don't have to play Jesse's Girl every goddamned night.

I'm with Phil.  I see the real thing or not at all.  Although I will accept an argument that Aerosmith is a Stones tribute band! ;-)

It may also be argued that The Stones are their own best tribute band...What tribute band could resist playing Miss You every...goddamned...without even blinking...show....

I like both just for entertainment, just to see them live, I do prefer cover bands, as far as I understand this is the difference:
  • Cover bands: Play music composed by others but most of the times with original arrangements made by the band, like the Rolling Stones in the early days.
  • Tribute bands: Play covers in exactly the same version of the original studio album, dress like the band they are paying tribute the the band and imitate the stage movements and styles.

I see every Stones tribute and cover band whenever they are playing nearby. Its the best music so its always a fun night out. If they look and act like the band members I yell MICK!! KEEF!!  I try to make them feel good, I stand in the front and dance and tease them by stroking my bottle, and they like it! ;D
