Title: What's your favorite era of the Stones
Post by BrianRollingJones on Apr 2nd, 2017 at 6:23pm
Myself I prefer the band from '63 to '69. I feel that in the 1970s - not necessarily because of the loss of Brian, or because of the audition of Taylor - that the Stones lost a certain darkness to them. You never really saw them make a song as haunting as Gimme Shelter or as creepy as Midnight Rambler after 1969. You never had stuff as melodic or simply pretty as Ruby Tuesday or Child of the Moon again. You never saw the dark medievalism of stuff like Play with Fire or Citadel again.

I feel that in the Taylor years they went from being a blues based pop-rock band to just being a 70s rock band with over the top guitar noodling. I think that with the loss of The Beatles as their main competition, they didn't try as hard to be melodic and a lot of the melody and musicianship was tossed in favor of pure rock.

With Ronnie they began to experiment again but it was very disjointed. You'd have a Keith by  numbers rocker one track, and then a cool piece of experimentation by Mick the next.

That said, I think "Happy" and "Dance Little Sister" are my two favorite tracks by the Stones of the entire '70s.

Era?

Depends how you define "era"...we have the "Brain era"...The Wyman Years...The Taylor Era...The Oldham period...The pre-Ronny...The 60/70/80/90/etc...The fighting years...

Ahhh...I am just kidding...I love the Stones of the 70's...but I do love Beggers Banquet and Undercover...with GHS as my fave

Thats if you are talking MUSIC...if you are talking TOURING/Performances...Jagger sounds so much better now that he is no longer clocking in 5 miles of running around each nite (forward AND backwards) in a stadium...so that would prolly be VooDoo Lounge to present...maybe even 40 licks to present...hard to tell w/o looking/listening

Edith... Even that I said "1966-1976, specially the Jimmy Miller days" I gotta say that LIVE the 1978 tour was one of the most "Stone" tours, almost as dead drunk and high as the New Barbarians tour next year!

I've always felt the 1975-1976 shows are underrated personally. The band is sloppy, messy, and all strung out, with an awesome backing band. It's also cool because Woody still played lead guitar in that era before doing the weaving thing.

Roughly autumn '65 to Spring '67. Aftermath, Between The Buttons, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint It Black, Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Let's Spend The Night Together, Ruby Tuesday, Got Live If You Want It!, those classic appearances on Ed Sullivan/RSG/TYLStars... They never looked or sounded better!

I'm OK with the mick-no-keith era starting in 2033,
but it will never be my favorite...

Call me old-fashoned

68-82 for me which is quite a long period but every studio album they produced was a winner and some great tours right up to the UK one in 82 which sadly was Stu's last.
