"Shine a Light" was a song featured on the Rolling Stones' 1972 album Exile on Main St.. A version of the song, under the title Get a Line on You, was made by Russell at Olympic Studios in October 1969 with assistance from Jagger (lead vocal), Ringo Starr (drums), Russell (piano), and probably also Bill Wyman (bass) and Mick Taylor (guitar). The recording was made during the recording sessions for the album Leon Russell (released 1970), where both Starr and Wyman contributed drums and bass to some of the tracks. However, the song "Get a Line on You" was not on the released album, but was shelved until 1993, when it finally surfaced as a bonus track on the 24K gold re-release by DCC Compact Classics (DCC Compact Classics GZS 1049) - Wikipedia

On his recording of "Wild Horses" Leon wrote a whole new verse that was a tribute to Gram Parsons.

I saw him when he was young and fresh and then a few years ago when he was old and in rough shape. His career spanned his whole life so you gotta respect that. RIP Leon, you were an original!

Public memorial services are planned in Tennessee and Oklahoma for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leon Russell, who died Sunday at the age of 74.
Bond Memorial Chapel says a funeral will be held Friday at Victory Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, then another service will be held Sunday at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center in Tulsa. The Oklahoma native died in his sleep Sunday. The funeral home says Elton John, Bruce Hornsby, Willie Nelson and others will serve as honorary pallbearers. Russell recorded hit songs such as “Tight Rope” and “Lady Blue,” and participated in “The Concert for Bangladesh.” John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison played on his first album, Leon Russell. http://www.pollstar.com/news_article.aspx?ID=828049 |

Coming in late to say I finally saw Leon in person this summer, about a month before his heart attack. My expectations were low, having heard he was not performing too well of late.
Well, from the front row in a theater setting, I saw a master of the piano, a compelling singer and a talented songwriter, in his later days, yes, but still terrific. His lengthy version of "Come On in My Kitchen" was bluesy and ballsy, my favorite of the show. And then there was "Your Song," with all the miles and years behind it... I sat to his right, so had a view of his hands on the keys, and the side of his face while he played. He came onstage with no fanfare, told a few stories, but mostly just went from tune to tune. I am grateful to have gone to the show. Voodoo, I will listen to your tracks--thanks for putting up your tribute show for us. |

Is that his family, and does he have kids? I don't much about his private life.
I saw him about 2 years ago in NYC and he was in a wheelchair at that time, so it was obvious he had health trouble but he played his heart out, literally. |

Fuck me! As if Bowie's death wasn't enough, now we lose an absolute genius, I'm trying to hold of a copy of Mad Dogs & Englishmen. That record is so hard to find, my video( remember them Grandma ?)fucked up just yesterday. I just decided to watch it, and no dice; dead as a dodo. Fuck off 2016.
