Title: Liverpool Accent
Post by gorda on Sep 18th, 2016 at 1:01pm
I guess I had never heard a real Liverpool accent before!  Wow!  I could barely understand him!  I have to pay real close attention, otherwise I can't decipher what he is saying!

Anyways, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez knocked him out! Sad!  It's always sad when someone falls.  But, then again, that was good for Canelo!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuvPg35tUWY

The accent was borne out of the filthy air produced by soap factories in particular that led to catarrh.  It then got inherited!

It was not my intent to offend anyone.  I apologize if I unintentionally hurt your feelings.

I love languages, and I thought I had heard all the British accents, but I guess not.

Anyways, when I went to England, I was the one with the accent.  As soon as I opened my mouth, people would get a little smile on their face.

(I have an American-California accent.  Over the phone, no one can tell I'm a Latina, until they actually meet me face to face!)

A long, long time ago, like 10 years ago, I spoke, by telephone, with a guy from the old Rolling Stones' website.  He had no idea I was Hispanic, until I told him!

Anyways, I have been bilingual (Spanish/English) my entire life!  Actually, I am now trilingual, because I am pretty fluent in Portuguese, too!

Hey Gorda.  I am absolutely not offended in any way whatsoever!  Far from it I find accents fascinating especially when they change over such short distances.   On the subject of old Liverpool catarrh I remember rowing in a race at Runcorn, (near Birkenhead / Liverpool).  I got light headed in the final stages as the air was so filthy.  That was 46 years ago!!  I assume that the air is much cleaner now!

Not quite sure about the poor air quality relating to soap factories.  There are some on the Wirral - the other side of the Mersey from Liverpool.

The air quality is now very good - we have the prevailing westerly winds to thanks for that. Although as previously stated Runcorn and Widnes upstream of Liverpool are still pretty smelly due to the chemical works.  There is an old joke - take your girl to Widnes and kiss her somewhere smelly!

The origin of the accent is generally considered to be due to the mass immigration to Liverpool of the north Welsh and to a lesser extent, in terms of accent, the Irish.
