New Orleans Saints' Sean Payton skeptical of new touchback rule

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is skeptical of the new touchback rule working the way the NFL intended in an attempt to cut down on injuries during kickoffs.

In the March league meetings, the NFL adopted on a one-year trial basis to move touchbacks after kickoffs to the 25-yard line -- instead of the 20 -- to limit the number of returns.

The idea behind the rule is that receiving teams will be less inclined to take the ball out of the end zone because of the improved field position.

Payton expects the new rule may have the opposite effect.

"I think -- this is me -- the rule change is actually going to work in the opposite manner of the intention," Payton told the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Saturday at Saints training camp in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. "We're going to have more kickoff returns because I think most teams feel like you can cover a kick inside 25 yards. ... I just don't think it's going to turn out the way it was intended to, and I think there are other ways to make that play safer."

The NFL could be close to eliminating kickoffs entirely after making adjustments to kickoffs in the name of player safety.

"I know this, we're working on a hang-time kick that puts it right down at the 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-yard line, and we feel like we're going to be able to cover inside the 25," Payton said. "So, conceding touchback to the 25 is a little different than the 20 and I think that -- I guarantee you -- we're not the only team working on that."

Drew Brees got a $30 million signing bonus on his new two-year deal.
That bonus will be spread out across the next five years of the Saints' cap, lowering Brees' number significantly this year. Bress will get a $1 million base salary this season and a $13 million base salary in 2017. The entire deal is fully guaranteed.

Joan Breaux, our Ultimate Saints Fan, hasn't missed a home game in 50 years

Meet our Ultimate Saints Fan, Joan Breaux.

*****

It was like opening a Christmas present that seemed too good to be true.

"I'd never been to an NFL game in another city before, and we were getting a team here in New Orleans," Saints fan Joan Breaux said. "I just couldn't believe it."

But the news was true, as Commissioner Pete Rozelle made the long-awaited official announcement at a press conference Nov. 1, 1966, at the Pontchartrain Hotel.

And the now 81-year-old Breaux and her family wasted no time in getting their season tickets for the inaugural season in Tulane Stadium.

She was in that number when Tom Dempsey kicked a 63-yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions 19-17 on Nov. 8, 1970. They were some of the last fans to leave the stadium that day.

"We were always the first to get to the game and the last to leave," she recalled. "Most people were outside the stadium already when they heard the noise."

And she's been in that number at every home game -- and many road games -- for 50 years.

With six children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, surely she missed out on a major family event to attend a game, right?

Her daughter, JoAnn Loupe, who nominated Breaux as the Ultimate Saints Fan, laughed.

"She literally asked her children, 'Please don't get get married, have a child or a (bridal or baby) shower during a Saints game,'" Loupe said. "And we all took her seriously."

Her children look back fondly at the memories their family created because of the Saints. Among their favorite moments, they listed:

*Being allowed to stay up late to meet the team plane at the airport, back when fans were allowed on the tarmac to seek autographs

*Eating lunch in the cemetary before walking to Tulane Stadium before kickoff

*Packing the family Volkswagon "Saints van" with neighbors and friends to ride to the games

Breaux, a New Orleans native who lives in Luling but keeps a weekend condo in the city, and Loupe said that their family road trips are where the best memories are made.

"When you travel, you get to greet the players and see their families," Breaux said. "We've met Steve Gleason, Deuce McAllister, Roman Harper ... He's a real gentleman."

Loupe said the players often seek out Breaux on the road, and Michael Lewis once texted her pictures from a San Francisco trip she didn't make.

Another player the Breaux family grew close to was the late Will Smith.

The tribute came two days after both were posthumously honored Friday during the Saints Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

"He would always ask us what away games we'd try to go to," Breaux said. "We miss him a lot. He was such a kind person and treated us like part of his family."

One of her fondest memories was the first game back in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, against the Atlanta Falcons.

"It was about much more than football," Breaux said. "It was about a city coming back."

Loupe said that her mom had one item on her bucket list, and it was to see the Saints win the Super Bowl. It meant just as much to her family to see her, along with husband Charlie, have that opportunity.

"It was pure joy knowing our parents were still alive when the Saints went to the Super Bowl," Loupe said. "And that they got to go to Miami to the Super Bowl and watch the Saints win? Nothing compares!"

As for the team's chances of getting back to the Super Bowl, Breaux is still a believer.

"As long as we have Drew Brees and Sean Payton, anything is possible."

Huge game for The Home Team this Sunday! Check it sniff...

Beat New Orleans - we skip the wild card game - and will host one of these teams in the Division Round:

Seattle, Green Bay, New York Giants or Detroit Lions

If we win the Division Round and Dallas also wins - we would travel to Dallas for the Championship game.   If we win the Division Round and Dallas loses - we will host one of these teams for the Championship round:

Washington, New York Giants, Green Bay, Detroit Lions or Seattle Seahawks

Now, what if we don't beat New Orleans.   There are a couple of scenarios which would still give us a 2nd - but the possibilities of who and where we play is varied greatly:

We will host one of these teams in the Wild Card Round (unless we get the 2nd seed (case 7 and 8):

Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Washington Redskins or Green Bay Packers,

Depending on the results of wild card weekend, we would then travel to one of the following teams for the Division Round (again except in case 7 and 8)

Seattle Seahawks,  Detroit Lions or Dallas Cowboys

In case #7 and #8 - we skip the Wild Card round and will host one of the following teams based on the outcome of the Wild Card weekend games:

Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks or New York Giants

In case #7 and #8 - if we win the game - and Dallas loses the game, we would host the team that beat Dallas - either:

Detroit Lions, New York Giants or Seattle Seahawks.

Have you heard the rumour that an assassination attempt on Tom Brady will be made following which Trump, in one of his first acts as President, will cancel the Super Bowl? The litigation that will ensue is expected to take at least 10 years to resolve. It all goes back to Trump's involvement with the ill fated United States Football League in the 80s. He was the owner of the New Jersey Generals and one of the main drivers behind an anti trust action brought by the USFL against the NFL. The action succeeded on  liability but the Court awarded damages of $1.00 which were then tripled to $3.00 pursuant to anti trust legislation. This saw the end of the USFL.

Staubach recalls when Landry installed shotgun for Cowboys

by HOWARD FENDRICH, The Associated Press

All these years later, Roger Staubach remembers quite clearly what his initial reaction was when Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry approached him about making the shotgun formation a recurring feature of their offense.

"I thought he was crazy or something," the former quarterback said with a snicker during a telephone interview this week. "I mean, we're talking about 1975. Nobody used the shotgun."

The Pro Football Hall of Fame — which counts both Staubach and Landry among its members — says San Francisco 49ers coach Red Hickey introduced a form of the shotgun offense to the sport in 1960, before abandoning it during the following season. But Landry's Cowboys get credit for bringing it back and popularizing it by positioning Staubach 5 yards behind the center.

That set the stage for what today is the most popular way for NFL offenses to line up: 60 percent of plays this season began in the shotgun , up from 19 percent in 2006, according to data provided by TruMedia Networks.

So how did it originate? According to Staubach, Landry (who passed away in 2000) figured he needed to try something to jump-start the Cowboys, who were coming off an 8-6 record, a third-place finish in the NFC East and had missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Landry and assistant Mike Ditka — who previously had played tight end for Dallas and would later lead the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl title as a head coach — decided to use the shotgun formation on third downs and in 2-minute drills, because Dallas usually threw in those situations, anyway.

"We had a rough year in '74. We weren't supposed to do anything in '75," Staubach recalled. "At first, we heard some criticism. The shotgun was really unique at the time."
It also worked.

"That's when it really came into vogue," said Herm Edwards, who played against Landry's Cowboys as a defensive back for the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s and 1980s, then coached in the NFL. "It was a different look and, for a while, it messed up your way of looking at the quarterback's drop and defining that drop."

Staubach went from a 52.8 completion percentage and 11 touchdown passes in 1974, to 56.9 percent and 17 TDs the next season while in the shotgun part of the time.

He grew to like the formation, but not necessarily for how it helped his throwing.

Part of Staubach's game was running with the football. The shotgun allowed him to find lanes better as he surveyed the defense while looking straight ahead at the snap, instead of moving backward sideways after receiving a hike from the center.

"Teams weren't used to it, and they had to work to play against it. It was a real advantage," he said. "We weren't supposed to do anything that year. But the shotgun was a big part of having the success we had in 1975."

And beyond: Dallas would reach the Super Bowl that season, starting a run of three appearances in four years in the NFL's championship game.

"All of a sudden," Staubach said, "I fell in love with it."
Slowly but surely, so did the rest of the league.

Chris Wesseling has had it up to HERE with the faulty football logic he's seen flying fast and furious lately. Below, he thoroughly -- if a bit crankily -- debunks some of the more galling popular fallacies that have taken root:

Stop discrediting the Atlanta Falcons

When Matt Ryan became the first quarterback in 126 games of the Pete Carroll era to pass for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns without an interception against the Seahawks, Seattle fans dismissed that extraordinary performance as a byproduct of injured safety Earl Thomas' absence.

When Ryan eviscerated Green Bay's defense to become the first player of the Super Bowl era to record at least four passing touchdowns without an interception while rushing for at least one score in a playoff game, Packers fans pointed to defensive coordinator Dom Capers as the culprit.

To paraphrase James Carville, it's not your defense. It's Atlanta's juggernaut offense, stupid.

While the national media spent four months salivating over the Dallas Cowboys, pausing briefly to worship at the altar of Aaron Rodgers, they missed the boat on a high-octane Falcons attack that stands as one of the most effective in NFL history.

The legendary 2007 Patriots are the only team ever to score on a higher percentage of drives than Atlanta's 52.6 this season. If the Falcons emerge victorious in Super Bowl LI, they will be the highest-scoring champions the football world has ever seen.

Led by an unparalleled play-caller and schemer, this offense features the MVP favorite channeling 2007 Tom Brady, the NFL's premier complementary backfield, a Randy Moss-like talent leading the league's deepest receiving corps and the only offensive line to start the same five players in every game.

The national media might have just woken up to this offense's truly terrifying nature, but the Falconshave been here all along.

Falcons player's wife almost had baby in hallway

by Carl Willis, WSBTV.com

ATLANTA --

Parents of the smallest Atlanta Falcons team member are talking about the eventful NFC Championship that will forever be a part of the story of their daughter’s birth.
Lily Levitre was born just hours after the NFC playoff game between Atlanta and Seattle, but the story begins before the game started.

Falcons’ player Andy Levitre’s wife Katie was on her way to the game when she began to feel contractions. By the time she got there, they were seven minutes apart.

But Katie wasn’t ready to go to the hospital. She says she knew labor could take a day or more, and she wanted to see her husband play in the big game. So she toughed it out all the way through.

"The first quarter wasn't so bad. I got to see him spike the ball which was pretty cool but (labor pains) started pretty quickly after that," she said.

Katie says she took walks through the Georgia Dome halls to ease the pain.

The second the Falcons won, she says she knew baby Lily was coming and that she needed to grab her husband and get to the hospital.

"As soon as I saw him I just burst into tears," she said. "I knew something was up then," Andy Levitre said.

After a quick stop at home, they finally made it to the hospital around 10:30. Their baby was born just after midnight.

"We almost had that baby in the hallway," Katie said.

Head coach Dan Quinn heard about the sacrifice that Katie made to be there for her husband and the team so he gave her a game ball for showing the "ultimate toughness."

"I could have never expected that. It's just a nod to how much Dan Quinn really appreciates his players and their families," she said. "From the very beginning he's been amazing to all of us."

Earlier this year, Andy was asked to write out his goals for the year.

"I wrote that I want to be standing on the stage with the Super Bowl trophy in one hand and my newborn daughter in the other hand," he said.

All of Atlanta is hoping for that as well, Andy.

What is it with these choke teams?  Falcons, Bengals, Chargers, Vikings, etc.  You can just hand them the keys to victory.  What will they do?  Stagger around like spastics trying to fellatiate anything that looks cylindrical.  I just say to myself "there but for the grace of J. Christ go I."  Something like that.  Those aren't the exact words I use.  I'm not going to debate you fucking idiots about my exact thoughts.  The goddamn point is that the Falcons and their fans are mongoloids who suck on dicks all day long.
