Thanks, Tom - I changed the thread title if thats OK, as it'll give more people a clearer idea of the subject matter

Anyway, more here :

Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake docs to bow at TIFF

After documenting British musical acts such as One Direction and Coldplay, director Paul Dugdale is setting his sights on The Rolling Stones for a new documentary world premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America was among two docs revealed at a Tuesday (July 26) press conference announcing special presentations and galas playing at the Canadian festival, which runs from September 8 to 18.

The doc isn’t the first of Dugdale’s dalliances with the iconic rock band: the director previously directed The Rolling Stones: Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live (2013). His latest effort, which will receive the fest’s gala treatment, follows the band’s recent Latin American tour, which culminated with a gig in Havana, Cuba, in March.

More acts are playing in Cuba since the country began restoring diplomatic relations with America, but shows are nonetheless tricky to organize. Olé Olé Olé! covers all the logistical issues that arose in arranging the Cuban gig.

“There’s a lot of twists along the way and a lot of suspense as to whether the concert will come off,” TIFF Docs programmer Thom Powers tells realscreen.

He adds that Dugdale’s familiarity and easy rapport with the Stones comes across on screen. “There’s a scene with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger hanging out and doing an unplugged version of ‘Honky Tonk Woman,’” he says. “You don’t see that very often.”

Keith Richards, Morgan Neville
Keith Richards and Morgan Neville at TIFF ’15
Stones founding member Keith Richards was present last year at TIFF for the Morgan Neville-directed Netflix doc Under the Influence. The guitarist is also the subject of the BBC’s recent hour-long doc, Keith Richards: The Origin of Species, helmed by The Filth and the Fury director Julien Temple.

A second music documentary bowing at TIFF is Jonathan Demme’s concert film JT + The Tennessee Kids, following pop star Justin Timberlake and his touring band’s closing performances from the 20/20 World Experience World Tour in Las Vegas. The doc will also play as a gala.

Demme is known for such dramas as The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Rachel Getting Married (2008), but has a number of music doc credits, including the Talking Heads’ landmark concert film Stop Making Sense (1984), Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006) and Kenny Chesney: Unstaged (2012).

“You can see little touches in this film that will feel familiar to fans of Stop Making Sense,” Powers told realscreen. “The symmetry in which Jonathan frames shots and the careful attention that Justin Timberlake brings to his stage presentation is equal, although on a much larger scale, [to] the attention to detail that Talking Heads brought.

“This is the work of one of the most skilled directors of performance documentaries ever and you feel it in every frame of the film,” he added.

The TIFF Docs program will be unveiled on August 9. Powers is staying mum on the line-up except to say that several of this year’s selections will seek to “change the conversation around important issues.”

One film that is definitely not on the slate is Sydney Pollack’s 1972 Aretha Franklin doc Amazing Grace, which was pulled from last year’s festival amid a legal dispute between the Queen of Soul and the filmmakers. “Short of some very big surprise to me, I would not be stirring anticipation for that one,” said Powers.

Elsewhere, Lo and Behold director Werner Herzog is following up his 2015 drama Queen of the Desert with Bolivia-set natural disaster film Salt and Fire, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Michael Shannon and Anita Briem.

Another doc-related premiere is that of Jeff Nichols’ drama Loving, which is based on Nancy Buirski’s titular 2011 documentary The Loving Story and tells the story of an interracial couple who was arrested for getting married during the civil rights movement era in the U.S.

During the press conference, festival director and CEO Piers Handling said to expect “exciting news” in the coming weeks regarding diversity and gender representation among this year’s films. More countries are represented by the 2016 line-up than in past festivals, he added.

Cristiano Radtke posted this on our facebook page

That map refers to the Keane movie that was also distributed by Musicscreen (http://www.musicscreen.co.uk/keanetrailer.html). There's no Italy on it (just to mention one example), but Havana Moon will be screened there on a lot of cities (here's a list of Italian cities: http://www.nexodigital.it/the-rolling-stones-in-cuba/).
Also, the Stones' website mentions that there will be screenings in Russia, but you don't see any movie theater in Russia listed on that map.

A bit confusing. The 'Havana Moon' concert movie and 'Olé Olé Olé' documentary appear to be two different projects.

Here's a newly released trailer for the latter. It looks pretty special

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/7511245/the-rolling-stones-concert-doc-goes-to-cravetv-toronto-film-festival

Ole x3 coming to cable faster than you can say GRRR!!!

The subscription VOD platform Crave TV has bid against Netflix for movie titles at the Toronto Film Festival, and nabbed the concert feature The Rolling Stones Ole! Ole! Ole!: A Trip Across Latin America from Eagle Rock Entertainment. CraveTV bought out the Canadian theatrical and all other windows to keep the concert film and travelogue away from Netflix.

Otherwise Netflix had a busy TIFF, having snapped up the worldwide rights to the Justin Timberlake concert film Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids, which debuted earlier in the festival. And Netflix launched in Toronto four documentaries -- Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn's Amanda Knox; Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer’s Into the Inferno; Leonardo DiCaprio's executive produced The Ivory Game, by directors Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson; and The White Helmets, from director Orlando von Einsiedel.

CraveTV has spent heavily on U.S. TV shows to fend off Netflix in Canada via package deals with HBO, Showtime and the major Hollywood studios.

The deal for The Rolling Stones doc, the first by CraveTV at the Toronto Film Festival, followed director Paul Dugdale's film having its own world premiere in Toronto on Friday night, with Rolling Stones band members Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on the red carpet.

As part of the deal, CraveTV also acquired the Stones’ companion concert film, The Rolling Stones Havana Moon, a film based on the mega group's Havana show, and also directed by Dugdale. Previously CraveTV acquired music specials in post theatrical or pay TV windows. This makes taking all Canadian rights a first.

The SVOD will stream The Rolling Stones Ole Ole Ole: A Trip Across Latin America from Oct. 14, with The Rolling Stones Havana Moon to follow with a Jan. 2017 launch. After their exclusive first-windows on CraveTV, the concert specials will move to parent Bell Media's pay TV platform, The Movie Network, and then to cable channels like Bravo! and MUCH.

The specials will then air in Canada on the top-rated CTV network.

Just got back from the screening of Havana Moon.

Can't give much of an objective review right now :D but... absolutely amazing energy, I loved Midnight Rambler.

Some great camera shots throughout, of the guys walking from backstage, on stage, very good directing-wise.

And I also liked that the director caught all the little interplays, the details, Keith with Charlie, Mick thoroughly enjoying the show and playing with the audience, very good film. And rather sentimental at times. It never ceases to get me, these guys are the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever, and yet still somehow they don't get half the credit they should be given. What they do live is just beyond words. I guess what I'm trying to say is all other live acts can just pack it and go :D

And, before the concert, there's a funny interview with all four of the Stones together in the same room-rather rare, I'd say!

"Havana Moon" will be released in multiple disc format (CD, DVD, Bluray, vinyl) by Eagle Rock Entertainment on November 11th.

The link on amazon.uk seems to suggest the expanded version is four discs - which is presumably 2 CD and 2 DVD's.

The running time of the concert DVD is 116 minutes. I'd like to think any extra DVD would be the 'Ole Ole Ole' documentary.

A boy-band, Exhibitionists, amigos, Trump's soundtrack, a blues band and fine humourists & diplomats - all in one year.

In 2017 they should consider going semi-professional.

I heard him this morning as well...called it the worst rock documentary ever...with some good points as you said...Stern...a HUGE Stones fan......and said there was too much focus on Stones Mania...not so much a documentary on the band...as it was a giant ego trip in his opinion.

haha, yeah he's an ego maniac with a huge inferiority complex. which is what makes him what he is and he's worked it to his benefit. he's even helped me deal with my trauma and mental health.
I think he missed how much this documentary was about south american history and not just the band... it blended the band in well, which they did pretty well, now that I really rethink this.... not an easy thing to do.
