About Janis, and Holding Aloft Her Torch
It’s pretty hard to underestimate the influence Janis Joplin has had on my life; for better or worse, she was my only female role model from about 1985 onwards. I used to relish getting a sore throat with a cold and take advantage of that rasp to scream at the top of my lungs; I think at the beginning there, I may have only had “Piece of My Heart” on cassette–taped off the radio. I remember freshman year in high school getting on the bus and my friend Heidi being like “You sound sick!” and I said “I know! It’s great for trying to sing like Janis!”
