Cuba and Mick Jagger's Kiss

10/05/2015

We never got to hear Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston on our national stages. Freddie Mercury died without touching down in Havana, and when The Beatles broke up, we were a country where English music was considered ideological diversionism. We followed the career of Elvis Presley from a distance and the charismatic Amy Winehouse slammed the door on life without stepping foot on this island. However, now we are about to regain part of what was lost: Mick Jagger's emblematic mouth is here, the eternal youth of The Rolling Stones has arrived.

While the analysts debate, looking for signs of change in the Cuban political or diplomatic scene, transformations are capricious and take another direction. This country is not going to change itself into a new nation because John Kerry visited, nor because of the third visit by a pope in less than two decades. But Cuba is changing when people like this British rocker, icon of good music and of the greatest possible irreverence, touch down in Havana.

The vocalist, 72, has made his way through the streets of Havana leaving a trail of incredulity and beating hearts. It is not, admittedly, the excitement provoked by Beyoncé or Rihanna with their escapades in this theme park of the past, but Jagger's visit has more profound connotations. For several generations of Cubans he represents the forbidden, an attitude toward life that was denied us by an obsessive police control.

For a political system that tried to form the "New Man," with a Spartan spirit, "correct" and obedient, this skinny guy with his turbulent life signified the anti-model, what we must not imitate. However, the laboratory man hawked by the pedagogical manuals didn't work out... and Mick Jagger won the battle against the prototype of the militant boy, hair cut short and willing to denounce his own family.

A friend close to 70 came out into the streets this Sunday with the energy of a girl celebrating her fifteenth birthday. "Where is he?" she asked the guard at Hotel Santa Isabel, where the official news reported the idol of her youth to be staying, but the man gave her no details. Like an obsessed schoolgirl, she walked all the streets around the hotel looking in the windows, to try to see the lean figure of the leader of the Rolling Stones.

The lady displayed none of these reactions toward the American secretary of state, nor before the Bishop of Rome. For her, all these exalted visitors were in the range of the possible, no longer surprising nor moving. But Jagger... Jagger is something else. "I don't want to die without seeing him," she told me on the phone, with the conviction of one who will not tolerate leaving this world without "closing an era," putting the capstone on her "best years," she told me.

My friend infected me a little with her enthusiasm, I must confess. No sermon in the Plaza of the Revolution, no speech to open an embassy, caused my stomach to jump this way, a sudden feeling of living in historic times. A nervousness that will last until we see the legendary British band play next March at the Latin American stadium, in front of a crowd that will try to recover its lost years.

Jagger is much more than the living legend of rock and roll presented by the media. This beanpole, all mouth, all energy, all life, embodies a time that they snatched from us, an existence that we could have had and that they took from us.

It seems a shame to me that the political analysts don't realize it: the future Cuba could start with the Rolling Stones in Havana.

I've seen pix of Havana street life in the Castro decades, and somehow I doubt that the forbidden has been denied.

I have been a few times...there is little that is forbidden in that respect.
Every evening, empty lots and public spaces turn into dance parties with the rum and cokes and dance moves that Jagger will have to compete with...around the copelia, the trannys and street walkers are there with their wears for sale..

the apartheid in Cuba that is the sad part...areas allowed for only the tourists and the lucky few who the state awards weekend passes for whatever reason... the person who asked about ticket prices...well, most Cubans make about the equivalent of $210/year, the national standard wage...you read that correctly...

So...either there wont be any Cubans at this show...the Stones will play for free...or there will be alot of good will cultural exchange seats that night...

I cant wait to see which.

HAVANA, Oct 9 — British singer Sting is aiming to beat the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger to perform in Cuba, his Argentine guitarist said in an article yesterday.

Dominic Miller, who has performed with Sting since 1990, told Cuban news portal cubadebate.com that his boss was vying to make it to the island before Jagger, who is reported to be considering a March concert in Havana.

The 72-year-old rocker is expected to perform on the island as part of a 2016 Rolling Stones Latin America tour.

Miller will perform in Havana Thursday night as part of British Cultural Week on the island.

You wore a bandana, I wore navy blue
We met in Havana at quarter past two
Across the Savannah and down to the beach
You munched a banana, I nibbled a peach.
You played a small solo, I muffled a drum
You offered a polo, I stuck with my gum
I danced a light polka, you threw a few hoops
I was Oscar Homolka, you were Marjorie Proops

Mick Jagger, Julien Temple and Carlos Acosta working on BBC film series in Cuba
Jagger is old friends BBC Creative Director Alan Yentob, who will also be working on the project

BBC Creative Director Alan Yentob said he hoped to capture the story of a potential Rolling Stones concert in Havana Getty

The BBC’s Creative Director Alan Yentob is working with Mick Jagger, the film director Julien Temple and ballet dancer Carlos Acosta on a series of films about the new Cuba.

Only weeks after the Caribbean nation re-opened relations with the United States, Yentob told The Independent that Temple was currently with Jagger in the Cuban capital Havana working on a “long-term project” to create the latest in a series of city-based films for the flagship BBC1 arts show Imagine. Previous films have featured London and Rio de Janeiro.

The Imagine host said he hoped to capture the story of a potential Rolling Stones concert in Havana, which could provide the finale for the band’s South American tour next spring. “We have started filming and this is going to be a project which will have a theatrical life (cinema release),” he said. Yentob, who is old friends with Jagger, also worked with Temple on Requiem for Detroit, a remarkable BBC2 film exploring the cultural and economic story of one of America’s greatest industrial cities.

BBC Creative Director Alan Yentob

The BBC Creative Director is making a separate film with Acosta as the dancer realises a long-held ambition of putting together a new ballet company drawn primarily from his native Cuba. “This is his last season at the Royal Opera House and he’s setting up his own company. It’s also his story about his life in Cuba and his family,” Yentob promised.

A new series of Imagine begins later this month with a film set in Venice, where Yentob and the author and Independent columnist Howard Jacobson examine the impact of one of Shakespeare’s most contentious characters, Shylock, the Jewish money-lender from The Merchant of Venice. The pair visit the city’s ancient Jewish quarter, Il Ghetto Nuovo, and discuss with Shakespearean academics the influence of Shylock on anti-Semitism. Jacobson’s re-imagining of the character is the subject of his forthcoming book, Shylock is My Name.

Temple and Yentob have combined again in the new Imagine series to make The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson, tracing the former Dr Feelgood guitarist’s battle with cancer and recent improvement in health. Temple previously made the acclaimed Dr Feelgood documentary Oil City Confidential and the new Imagine film was to be the story of the charismatic Wilko’s final days. Yentob said: “We started when he was going to die and then he got this redemption and discovered he was not going to die. It’s an amazing film.”

In a further adventure in music documentary, to be shown next month, Yentob has shot Who is David Gilmour? in which the Pink Floyd singer and guitarist explains the process of making his last album, Rattle That Lock, with his wife Polly Samson, the novelist and lyricist. “He does these scat verses and she put earphones on and walks across the beach and writes the words,” he said.

The new series includes a documentary on David Chipperfield – “he’s Angela Merkel’s favourite architect” – and the sculptor Sir Antony Gormley as he prepares for his momentous exhibition at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence.

Sounds a bit opportunistic and slightly exploitative...but that will happen when a country or region opens itself to the west, is it not? At least they will be beating Pizza Hut and McDonalds. However, there are plenty of American companies who have been there for years in spite of this false embargo (Coke, marlboro, DelMonte, Ronzoni, to name a few)

Would have been better if there was a series done about the "Old Cuba" because the music and art scene was not as dusted by the west. I dont really care about Cuba as seen thru the eyes of a Rolling Stone as the agenda would be skewed IMO.

A historic free concert (since they cant charge 5-10 years salary per ticket)...with Buena Vista Social Club joining them...and other Son musicians sounds interesting.

Sir Mick Jagger was in Havana last week, which was great for us because it just happened to be Brit Week 2015 – a celebration of music, sport, theatre, film and photography. Here he is with Ambassador Tim Cole following a chat about music and 2015 being a historic year for Cuba. Let’s hope Sir Mick will be back in town in the not too distant future with the Rolling Stones! Fingers crossed.
Sir Mick Jagger estuvo en La Habana la semana pasada lo que fue fantástico para nosotros porque ocurrió durante la Semana Británica de este año, una celebración de música, deporte, teatro, cine y fotografía.
