Don Henley Sets Release Date for 'Cass County,' Announces Solo Tour

With the Eagles' farewell shows coming to an end, singer-songwriter plans his own cross-country run in support of his new country album

BY ANDREW LEAHEY July 17, 2015

Don Henley, performing here with the Eagles in 2014, is eyeing a solo tour later this year. Tommaso Boddi/WireImage

When the Eagles' two-year farewell tour comes to a close in late July, Don Henley will head back home for a few months of rest. . .then hit the highway all over again. This time, the singer-songwriter will be playing songs from Cass County, his first album of solo material since 2000's Inside Job. The new record, which Henley co-produced with former Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers drummer (and Hell Freezes Over collaborator) Stan Lynch, is due out September 25th.

Inspired by the country music that soundtracked Henley's early days in east Texas, Cass County finds him harmonizing with Miranda Lambert, trading verses with Martina McBride and duetting with Merle Haggard. Although it's unlikely that any of those country stars will join him on the road, Henley has already tapped folk veteran Shawn Colvin to open his string of cross-country solo shows, which kick off in October. Exact dates have yet to be announced, but Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington, D.C. are among the confirmed stops.

"I'm associated with California a lot because of that other band that I play in, but I really and truly was born and raised in Cass County, Texas," Henley said last month during a private listening party in Nashville. "I'm a Southerner and a Texan. I have ancestors in Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia. So this is a natural progression for me. It's not me trying to do the 'Don Henley country album.' It's who I am and where I come from."

While the upcoming run will be Henley's biggest non-Eagles tour in more than a dozen years, he has played his share of solo shows since the Inside Job Tour, including a string of shared dates with Stevie Nicks during her 2005 Two Voices Tour.

Here's the track list for Cass County. A deluxe edition will include four additional songs.

1. "Bramble Rose" (with Mick Jagger and Miranda Lambert)
2. "The Cost of Living" (with Merle Haggard)
3. "Take A Picture of This"
4. "Waiting Tables"
5. "No, Thank You"
6. "Praying for Rain"
7. "Words Can Break Your Heart"
8. "That Old Flame" (with Martina McBride)
9. "When I Stop Dreaming" (with Dolly Parton)
10. "A Younger Man"
11. "Train In The Distance"
12. "Where I Am Now"

When Don Henley was a boy growing up in rural Texas, he used to listen to country greats like Hank Williams and George Jones on the legendary Louisiana Hayride radio show. For Cass County, his first solo album in 15 years, Henley went back to those roots, recording in Nashville with singing partners like Mick Jagger, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Miranda Lambert and Alison Krauss. "I got people whose voices move me, people whose music I respect," says Henley. "They're real singers who can really get the job done."

Henley wrote songs for the album during the 160-mile drive between Dallas and his tiny hometown of Linden in Cass County, Texas, drawing inspiration from a landscape he describes as "where the Old South meets the West." Co-produced by former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch, the songs stretch from country and blues to rock and Americana, the kind of organic blend he's specialized in since the Eagles' early days.

Henley spent five years on Cass County, recording in Dallas and Orlando as well as Nashville. Henley, Jagger and Lambert mix voices on "Bramble Rose," originally by singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, and there are hints of the Eagles' "Desperado" on the understated Haggard duet "The Cost of Living." Parton appears on "When I Stop Dreaming," a bittersweet 1955 classic by the Louvin Brothers. Henley had hoped to record with Jones, but that collaboration couldn't be arranged before the iconic singer's death in 2013. "I'll always regret that," says Henley.

Henley — who has toured steadily and recorded one studio album with the Eagles since the band re-formed in 1994 — enjoyed the process of getting back in the studio, and also spending time in Nashville. "They have the heart-attack food that I grew up on," he says. And he doesn't expect it'll take another decade and a half before he releases his next album. "I write a little bit every day," he says. "I still hope that my best work is ahead of me."

Let's write alternate titles of songs for Henley's album, and produce an alternate cover.

Suicide may be something I do one of these days (likely, in fact), but it won't be because of Eaglismness.  All kidding aside you guys, I fucking hate the Eagles, I really do.  I despise the fucking Eagles and their vast fans.  I think  of Eagle fans and I auto-wretch in a putrid bowl of liquid swill that I keep in the garage for just such purposes.

The Eagles were trendsetters. They were charging $100 for regular tickets for their tours before the Stones did it and took it a stage further.

Mick owes Henley a LOT.

And Glenn Frey. The Eagles have to charge $100 or more for Frey to buy his Lakers tickets.

To be able to do the final touches on it?

" Eagles To Receive 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors

Jul 23, 2015

America to Celebrate Honorees' Lifetime Artistic Achievements Sunday, December 6, 2015

The Honors Gala will be broadcast on CBS on December 29, 2015 at 9:00p.m., ET/PT.

The Kennedy Center announced the selection of the six Honorees who will receive the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors. Recipients to be honored at the 38th annual national celebration of the arts are: American rock band the Eagles, singer-songwriter Carole King, filmmaker George Lucas, actress and singer Rita Moreno, conductor Seiji Ozawa, and actress and Broadway star Cicely Tyson.

"Quite simply," said Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein, "our Honorees represent the voices, soundtracks, and stories of our personal lives and memories."

"When I look at this year's outstanding slate of Honorees, I am struck by a powerful common theme-artists as history-makers, artists who defy both convention and category," commented Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter.

In a star-studded celebration on the Kennedy Center Opera House stage, produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment, the 2015 Honorees will be saluted by today's leading performers from New York, Hollywood, and the arts capitals of the world. Seated with the President of the United States and Mrs. Obama, the Honorees will accept the thanks of their peers through performances and tributes.

"We are deeply grateful to have been named a Kennedy Center honoree. The members of the Eagles hail from different regions of this great nation and we feel very fortunate that our music has been embraced by people from all walks of life, all over the world. Popular music is one of America's greatest exports – a bridge that spans geographical and cultural boundaries. We are truly humbled to have been able to be a part of this global connection. Many thanks to our fans, our fellow artists and the Kennedy Center for this recognition.”

Jerome Bettis Says He Sold Drugs and Shot at People While Growing Up in Detroit
Jordan Strauss/Associated Press

With his entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, Jerome Bettis is ramping things up with a media circuit discussing his life and professional career.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers halfback gave an interview to Graham Bensinger (h/t Detroit Free Press' James Jahnke), which was posted to Yahoo Sports on Thursday.

In the interview, Bettis spoke on his rough beginnings as a kid growing up in Detroit. He told Bensinger how he and his brother began dealing crack cocaine to make money for their struggling family:

The mind-set was, "We're in the hood. Mom and Dad, they're working their butts off. There's no money around. We need to make some money." So we said, "You know what? Let's give it a shot." And it was one of those moments that you regret, but at the moment, that was the only thing that was really available to us.

Bensinger pursued the point, asking if violence—specifically shooting at someone—had ever been a part of his life. Bettis said it had:

Yeah. That was part of growing up in our environment, in our neighborhood. That wasn't out of the realm of normal. When you go back, it's nothing that I ever wanted to glorify, because I know in retrospect that it was awful. Here you are in a position to take someone's life, and that's never a good thing. And so as I look back on it now, I always see the wrongs that are in it and never want to bring light to it in that respect: that it was a good thing. It was the worst thing that I could've ever done. It was a bad decision, but it was the decision that I made and that I lived with at that moment.

Life could've been a lot different for The Bus.

Clearly, he regrets the bit of it he spent doing things that could've quickly curtailed his life, much less his chances at becoming a professional football player and Hall of Fame member.

Never go full Bodie, guys. It's not worth it.
