Going to the Rolling Stones concert on Saturday? Here's what you can expect


By Gene Warner, Buffalo News

The Stones are coming. The Stones are coming. And some elements of the Rolling Stones’ visit to Ralph Wilson Stadium on Saturday night may surprise people – especially in the number of fans expected, when they will start arriving, the availability of tickets and the going rate for seats.

Crowd size: While the stadium has a listed capacity of 71,857 for Buffalo Bills games, about 20,000 of those seats will not be available. Even though there are added seats on the stadium floor, the location of the stage at the stadium’s tunnel end apparently knocks out sections 115 to 130 and comparable sections in the upper levels.

“We’re expecting somewhere around 51,000 people, which is basically sold out,” Orchard Park Police Chief Mark F. Pacholec said Monday.

Multiple-day event: While stadium parking lots will open at 4 p.m. Saturday, four hours before the listed concert time, camper lots will open at noon Friday. So authorities are bracing for a large, early influx of die-hard Stones fans, many of them probably unfamiliar with the immediate area.

Almost sold out: After a quick check Monday on Ticketmaster.com, the original box-office venue, showed no pairs of tickets available in the cheapest price levels, originally on sale for $88.30 and $118.85 (including sales tax) per ticket. Limited numbers of seats seemed available in the $170.35 and $420.15 price ranges.

Front-row seats: While the Rolling Stones may belt out their signature, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” that’s not exactly true of the best seats in the house.
They’re available, on the secondary ticket market – for a ridiculous price, of course.

As an example, StubHub.com on Monday listed about a dozen pairs of tickets in the front row in front of the stage. The asking price ranged from $1,405 to $9,947, and that’s per ticket. The nation’s largest secondary ticket seller had more than 100 tickets available at an asking price of more than $1,000 apiece.

Other tickets: Late Monday, StubHub listed a total of 2,984 tickets available for Saturday’s concert.

Demand for tickets lukewarm: This is tricky, but most resold tickets appear to be pricing moderately, but not ridiculously, above the original box-office price at ticketmaster.com.

For example, in Section 105, in the far corner from the stage at the scoreboard end of the stadium, StubHub listed 22 tickets for sale Monday. Those seats initially cost $170.35 apiece (including sales tax) through ticketmaster.com. The asking price for those 22 tickets on Monday ranged from $168 to $263 apiece.

Timing: The concert time is listed at 8 p.m. Saturday, but this isn’t a Bills or Sabres game. Who knows what time Mick Jagger and his pals will strut on stage, after St. Paul and the Broken Bones warm up the crowd?

Turnstiles: Bills security officials couldn’t be reached for comment Monday, but fans are expected to have to abide by the same rules in effect at Bills games, outlawing, among other things, purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, backpacks, fanny packs and most seat cushions. Binoculars, small clutch bags and small, clear plastic bags are permitted.

Parking: Similar to a Bills game, concertgoers may park in the stadium lots or individuals’ private sites.

Roads: Again similar to Bills games, a section of Abbott Road, directly outside the stadium, will be closed starting at 3 p.m. Saturday. And westbound Big Tree Road will be closed after the game.

Hard to gauge since StubHub changed their interface and no longer shows total tickets available.
Hope to score a good pair there. Either way...I am all about the party!!

FROM TODAY'S BUFFALO NEWS. JEFF MIERS "GETS IT"

The Rolling Stones defy the passage of time

By Jeff Miers

What could a weather-beaten assemblage of 70-year-old men possibly know about rock ’n’ roll? Isn’t this music supposed to be the sole purview of the young and virile?

Well, I suppose being the last living embodiment of true rock ’n’ roll – which we’ll define as essentially white people appropriating African-American blues and adding an emphasis on the back-beat – gives one permission to play that music for whoever’s interested, and for as long as you please.

The Rolling Stones – the Strolling Bones, the Rolling Uglies, you’ve heard ‘em all before, no doubt – are in the midst of their Zip Code U.S. Tour which includes a stop Saturday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The fact that Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood are able to mount a tour of this magnitude is no small feat. But the fact that, after more than 50 years in the business, the Rolling Stones are actually in peak form as they haul their weary bones across the continent? This takes us into the area of the genuinely miraculous.

In case you’re worried that such praise is simply hyperbole from a scribe who has loved the Stones since childhood, caught them in concert everywhere from a vast stadium in Syracuse to an intimate club in Toronto, and is relieved that these guys are still alive and performing, consider this: On Tuesday, the band released “Sticky Fingers Live,” an in-concert rendering of a classic album that demands to be considered one of the Stones’ finest hours. Recorded during a warm-up gig at the small Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles a few weeks back, “Sticky Fingers Live” is ferociously good. It has the infamous garage-y grit, the subtle behind-the-beat smack provided by Watts, the “ancient form of weaving,” ragged-but-right interplay between guitarists Richards and Wood, and the inimitable sass and strut of frontman Jagger all in abundant evidence.

This is the Stones as the cosmos intended them to exist. Irreverent, on fire, filthy, carrying on as if the whole world agrees with their assessment that Chuck Berry and Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters created the world, and all we’re doing is living in it – this is what the Stones have always done. And, despite their many journeys around the sun, they’re doing it today as well as they ever have.

Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood aren’t doing it all alone – the band has, for several decades, benefited from the considerable input of keyboardist/musical director Chuck Leavell, bassist Daryl Jones, and singers Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer.

All can share in the responsibility for the Stones’ late-career renaissance. Some might argue that this renaissance does not include new material worthy of standing alongside the band’s finest work, but that’s a matter of opinion. Either way, as great as so many of their studio recordings have been, the Stones always have been a live band. The stage is their canvas.

Why do the Rolling Stones matter today? Sure, nostalgia will have something to do with it for a portion of the audience set to fill Ralph Wilson Stadium. However, some of that crowd will include fans that were still waiting to be born the last time the Stones played the same venue in October 1997. (That was a killer show, too.) The Stones have become something shared between generations – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, aging musicians and young upstarts, even grandparents and grandkids.

It’s more than reasonable to suggest that this will be the last time we’ll see and hear the Stones in concert. (For some, it will also be the first time.) When the band is gone, there won’t be another like it. We don’t really call it rock ’n’ roll any more – it’s now known as rock, an incredibly broad categorization that basically means not jazz, not classical, and not mainstream pop.

But for the Stones, it means Muddy Waters. It means the blues electrified and played loud. It means that bump-and-grind drum figure that heralds the arrival of “Honky Tonk Women” and the iconic two-chord guitar intro of “Brown Sugar.” It means that English white boy trying to be James Brown, and failing, created something of his own along the way. It means that frustrated adolescent yearning that never really goes away, no matter how old you grow.

The Stones are our last true conduit to all of this. Bless their crooked little hearts.

Charlie's blasting Jazz in his hotel suite per my source at Stones Central. Charlotte is with him. A lifelong friend of mine and fellow Stones fanatic happens to be a Chef there and has been for 20 years.

Band was snuck in through the Kitchen last night.

Bellmen report Jagger was very friendly and room service reports the same regarding encounters with Keith. Theo has also been seen near the pool area.

Mick ate dinner last night at Ristorante Lombardo on Hertel Ave., a mere 4 minutes from my apartment.

Rumor has it dinner tonight at Rue Franklin; one of Buffalo's finest serving French cuisine.

I am so happy for my City. It's finally our turn and because the City has gone through such a resurgence the Band doesn't have to flee to Niagara Falls or Toronto or East Aurora for accommodations, fine dining and great sights.

Buffalove!!!

Jagger dines at Ristorante Lombardo [Buffalo]

Visitors to Ristorante Lombardo on Hertel Avenue were in for a big surprise Thursday night.

Eating dinner at another table was – apologies to Paul McCartney – arguably the most famous rock star in the world.

Mick Jagger, who flew into Buffalo Niagara International Airport earlier in the day on a 747 sporting the Rolling Stones’ logo, was at the Italian restaurant with a small group in advance of the band’s concert Saturday at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“It was a small party of maybe five people, and pretty low-key. Everybody left him alone,” Tommy Lombardo Sr. said.

There were bodyguards, too. “He’s one of the most famous people in the world, right?” he said.

Lombardo said it was also “exceptionally busy with people from out of town,” noting the irony that some were in Buffalo to see Jagger and the Stones in concert.

“For people who were here for dinner, it was a special treat,” Lombardo said. “It was nice they came to dinner, and we treated them like we treat all of our customers. We respected his privacy.

“We appreciated he chose us,” he said.

Last month, in Columbus, Jagger ended up at a place called Mangano's after reportedly asking for "the best Italian in the city," according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Pittsburgh had a lame vote also.  Paint it Black "won" in the stadium that the Steeler play in.  Based on that, Shattered might be a opt choice for the home of the Bills.

We were a lot nicer to Gazza at the Pittsburgh show.

Anyway, I assume the Buff job was great, but was it "Pittsburgh Great"?

I liked it, had a decent (cheap) seat, but I felt this:

Better Beast of Burden than Wild Horses, but OK except: no Paint It Black.

Better Shattered or Respectable than LSTNT, which was done better than in recent tours, but still not good enough, as Voo points out above.  Plus you can tell the vote is rigged, because nobody would vote LSTNT over Shattered.

The professional parts of Buffalo were better than those of Pittsburgh: Jagger forgot no lyrics because he spent less time running from one end of the stage to the other, and he put on a great show staying mostly center stage. And much better use was made of the runway than in Pittsburgh, where they almost seemed frightened of it.

But: the raw parts of Pittsburgh were better than the raw parts of Buffalo.  Guitars were louder and raunchier, a bit more inspired.

Yes, they would. It was a huge hit and is known to everyone. Shattered wasn't and isn't, even though its a better song.

No, it's rigged, to the extent that they're going to pick the choice that they want, when it suits them.  They introduced LSTNT a couple shows back and they wanted to keep it in.

You had to be at the show - and be from the Buffalo area - to sense the zeitgeist.  We don't give a shit for the historical importance of LSTNT.

Some Girls is by six-times-platinum their highest selling studio album, and its rough-and ready songs get played on local radio daily.

By contrast, LSTNT is an old-school recording from the mid-1960s, which a sizable number of the audience would not know, as it only gets radio play when the Stones are on tour.

Plus we're talking a band that had a hired sax player standing by onstage to play Waiting for a Friend during the B2B pay-per-view while the vote was allegedly being tallied electronically before our eyes.

In April when stones announced a  stadium tour I moaned deep and loud. Why? I wanted no part.Fears of nostalgia, bad playing, no new music. Then Periscope and all the great set list etc  Ladyjane does here that I check religiously and my tune started to change. If the weather is good and we can get a tix etc etc.  Well the weather was good and the band was FUCKING FANTASTIC! From 81 until present ive seen them 7 times. So no super crazy fan but a good sample. And honestly they were better then ever.  The sound people are the unsung heroes of this tour. Incredible guitars. I heard it all clear. So thinking back to April I've learned 2 things. 1 . I'm full of shit. and 2 The Rolling Stones know what they are doing when it comes to tours. Is it the last time ? I dont know and right now dont care but I know this  it was the BEST time.

It was a great night...the band was so tight. I'm not a fan of LSTNT or YGMR, but OOC is, well, out of control live. Nobody holds a giant audience in the palm of his hand like Mr. Jagger. And our guitarists continue to KILL it.

I know its largely rigged. I didnt suggest they dont do that.

But LSTNT outpolling anything else on that list is totally believable.

Great pics and much appreciated as always SV! The bus video was hysterical to watch. Looking at all the familiar faces I was really sad I didn't make it to Buffalo, because I'm sure it was an extremely fun night partying with the people who were there, even if Buffalo didn't get a dream setlist. Luckily I was able to periscope most of the show on my iphone and the band sounded tight and crisp. Now we are down to the final show on the tour ~ Quebec. Anyone from our crazy group going to Canada?

My friend Merete from Denmark (who was in Berlin with Jini, Glenn, JumpinKentFlash, Matthias, myself and a few others) is there all week for that festival.

Its very hot but last night's gig featuring the Foo Fighters as headliners had to be abandoned early due to what were apparently pretty horrendous weather conditions.

Hopefully it'll be less chaotic on Wednesday.

I must admit that when YGMR appeared at Number 3, I yelled "Fuck", sat down, started sulking like a 2 year old and then whipped out my phone to check Facebook!!! Then those CLOWNS SV and TomL decided to torture me by getting in my face and singing "Hey Hey You Got Me Rocking Now". Bastards.

What a weekend. Just got home after two nights at our Stones Central locale. I'm not one to break down a concert song by song. It was such a special night for me that they could have played a 2 hour version of Miss You and I, wait. No. No. That wouldn't have been acceptable.

OOC was a treat; I was hoping for it as I really like it this Tour. CYHMK a nice surprise that left us screaming "Who the Fuck is Mick Taylor?" Yep. Ronnie was THAT good. Didn't see LSTNT coming at all. I really thought it would be Shattered, which I don't like live so I was happy with the "Song Vote Winner".

Our Band is on fire, especially Keith and Ronnie. The guitars were loud and gritty. What struck me was just how much fun they were having. Keith's grin just screams "I've looked the Grim Reaper in the eye, kids,  and HE backed down". Charlie seemed downright giddy at times. He got a great reception during Intros and actually walked out for a bow TWICE. Ronnie is a new man. He's clearly loving life and his playing shows it. Was introduced as Ronnie "Wing" Wood, a reference to Buffalo's most famous food. And what can we say about Mick that hasn't been said? I actually thought to myself "Is he really human?" It's hard to tear oneself away from the giant monitors despite being 5 rows off the floor on Keith's side in a section closest to the stage without an obstructed view. But I did watch him; particularly when he worked the crowd from the catwalk. I enjoy watching him cast his spell; it's mesmerizing yet somewhat voyeuristic. One feels like they are watching a seduction that perhaps one shouldn't. But who can turn away? Who can not be drawn into his game??? He's the Master and we are his subjects. It feels wrong but it feels good. I guess that's what attracts us to them; maybe sometimes being bad is more fun than being good.

It was an emotional night for me as it was my "full circle" show. My 1st Stones stadium show was in Aug of 75 in the same venue. How could I not think about how my life has changed? A 15 year old "child" is now a 55 year old road weary woman. Yet the Band is still with me. The Band that I've turned to through all the ups and downs of life is right there. On stage. Playing and playing well. My tears flowed during Wild Horses, YGAGWYW and the final bow. At one point I did look up to the sky and said a little prayer of thanks. I have maintained for years that we are the luckiest fans in the world and I'm sticking by that statement.

And then there was the element of my Stones world mixing with my Buffalo world. Getting to introduce some of my oldest and dearest friends to my beloved SV, TomL, martha, Nanky etc. Looking around the stadium and getting waves and hearing shouts from old friends, former co-workers, friends from the Boards etc. On MY turf. In MY hometown. The last time The Stones passed through here was in 1997 and there was no Stones Internet community. At least not in my world. Yet last night we were one. There goes that full circle again.

Best part of the weekend was the FUN. You can't be a real Stones fan and not be a bit mischievous, especially when Rocks Off is your Internet home base. The "Fuck you Gazza" video was all TomL. He was determined to recreate the infamous vid made by our South American friends. He enlisted SV as filmmaker, explained to the Bus what we had to do and we did it. I think we did it pretty well.

I'm still feeling like I'm in a dream and I really don't want to wake up. Thanks to photos and videos, though, these past couple of days will live on.

You really can't always get what you want. Sometimes you feel like you can't EVER get what you want. But every now and then an event comes along that gives your soul a boost. A much needed boost. And this weekend, my beloved RO'ers, I got what I needed.

One love.

What a great weekend.

The weather was spectacular.
The events organized by Matt and his lovely bride, and our own LJ, were fantastic.  Just a really fun time.

The show was pounding - for all the miscues in Pittsburgh, Buffalo was smooth sailing and tight.  Awesome being back where it all started.

Wish we could do it again!
Fingers crossed.

Very well spoken LJ. I know what you mean when you say your first show was when you were just a kid and all this time went by and yet The Stones are still out there, giving your life and soul a boost. Nothing else like it. Nothing tops a Stones concert with a bunch of great friends to enjoy it with. Best times in life. Everyone looks great in the photo, but Glencar is in exile, isnt he?

Very well spoken LJ. I know what you mean when you say your first show was when you were just a kid and all this time went by and yet The Stones are still out there, giving your life and soul a boost. Nothing else like it. Nothing tops a Stones concert with a bunch of great friends to enjoy it with. Best times in life. Everyone looks great in the photo but Glencar, is in exile isnt he?

glencar is looking good. I say we lift his life time banishment and give him one more shot.

Nice header pic!   That little corner was a slice of heaven!
A private nook with stone-wall seating and nice landscaping, away from the eyes of management and any of Buffalo's finest.

Danny's was a great spot for the party.
Despite repeated violations of Danny's policies, we never once had anyone come up to us and say anything.  The closest we came to any trouble was when Virginia Tim kept hitting on the young hot beer girl.  I was concerned he was going to have to register with the county, but alas, even that turned out ok.

Also enjoyed chatting with a bunch of the stage crew at the hotel -- they were staying there as well, and I met a number of folks that take a tremendous amount of pride in putting up that massive stage/light/sound system.  Joe, Harry, Steve and the others were colorful and reminded me of the '94 official video beginning with the roadie and his girlfriend for the evening!!   And let me just say this….if you think the road crew is a bunch of dope smoking party boys, you are dead wrong -- there are a lot of girls too out there smoking dope and putting up the stage!!!

Loved it.  The only fly in the ointment was the way the Hampton Inn played bait & switch with our LJ.  That was unfortunate.  Unfortunate for us, but most unfortunate for the asshole manager that stepped over the line and pissed off nanky.  And now his soul will be damned to eternal hell as I prepare to embark on a mission….

UPDATE:  HAMPTON INN, part of the Hilton Hotel chain…is HQ'd in McLean, Virginia -- what a coincidence, that is right where my law firm is HQ'd.  That's fantastic news.  I'll send a letter to Paris Hilton on this one.

A number of things.
Long sordid story, but the bottom line, and what you will eventually see in the Prayer for Relief in the Class Action Complaint I am preparing, is how to get the smug head guy Kevin (hereinafter "the Goon") fired.

He has no place in the hospitality industry.
None.
Someone with his combination of cluelessness and self-importance can easily find gainful employment as a mall cop somewhere.

He made me so mad Friday night that I went to bed in tears.

All my hard work, checking, double checking and triple checking that we were there to party but would keep it under control.
"No problem LJ. We are here to cater to your group. We're more than happy to host you".

And then THE GOON showed his face on Friday night to inform "go ahead and start cooking the food you brought but if I get ONE complaint, just one, I'm shutting you down. And not only will I shut you down, I'll close the outdoor patio for the remainder of the weekend and NO ONE will have access to it".

Fearing I was about to punch him in the face, I stormed off to bed.
Mr and Mrs Nanky were behind me feeling the same way.
Leave it to Sai Wong to fire up the grill at 1 am and start cooking. Everyone "behaved" to THE GOON's satisfaction apparently had a great time.
I wouldn't know. I was in bed angry.

Get em Nanky.

Although we had another chat Saturday morning and shook hands, The Goon remained smug and I told his underling Manager "I see your boss is a condescending prick. Must suck to work for him." She didn't reply but I know she agreed.

I think the woman at the Hampton was quite sympathetic (as opposed to the Goon who was just plain pathetic).

She was more than reasonable and was trying to accommodate the Stones group.

Should have flushed some food down the toilet and left some leftovers somewhere in the room. Preferably in a set of drawers.

In fact, that was something I and a group of friends did in this terrible hotel in Orlando on a marching band field trip. I think we threw a hardened biscuit across the wall. It wouldn't break for anyone else, except me. I think there were still crumbs on the floor when we left. Who knows? With the condition that room was in when we got there, I wouldn't be surprised if those crumbs were still in the carpet.

Once show is announced I will start a Buffalo Pre-party thread.

Pre-party will be less than a block from the Stadium and we are looking into bus service from West Seneca hotels to preparty and back to Hotel.
We are also working on parking spaces for those that prefer to drive. Preparty will be in a bar/restaurant and food will be provided.

No need for any of us to have to worry about grills, weather issues and port o potties.

Once all the details have been worked out and we come up with prices per person it shall be posted.

One love!!!!

Got everything I needed and so much more in Buffalo. It's not surprising since this has been a theme at countless Stones' gigs and parties.
The boys were so tight with Mick just off the hook. Keith was killing it and Ronnie wings Wood was just plain ferocious.
I talked to several fans after the show with most being young and their first time experiencing the Stones. All agreed they were incredible and exceeded their expectations.
Paula, Matt and His wife, I can not say thank you enough for all your hard work and dedication.
The Hampton hiccup was just that, in the grand scheme. With someone with a Gestapo complex and probably making assumptions on what we were about, in the long term that's his problem.
My fabulous weekend ended with my flight out of Buffalo delayed 2hr 45, the exact time that was scheduled between my connecting flight. I literally walked off this flight, crossed the aisle and entered my connecting flight in a matter of 45 seconds.
By this point I actually was feeling good, as I found out earlier the flight from Chicago to Houston was United Flight 505. I had to make that flight. What are the odds of that Stones reference?
Feeling better than good. Oh yeah!

Rick

What's next?
