Rolling Stones in Belfast: Stunning pics of fresh faced Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and co

These stunning pictures show the Rolling Stones in Belfast in 1965.

The snaps were taken before their performance at the ABC Theatre in Belfast on the 6th January.

The previous year they had only managed to play 13 minutes of their gig before it was called off due to hysterical fans breaking up the show.

Girls were fainting and had to be passed on stage because Ulster Hall was so packed before they were brought out.

Some of them were put on stretchers such was their excitement at seeing Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts.

The British overuse the word "stunning" almost as much as "brilliant."  They should try "awesome" or "righteous" once in a while.

Naturally, I'm all over this.

Righteous seems appropriate (I'm happy to delegate the use of the word 'awesome' exclusively to Americans, due to your overuse of it)

This was their second of three visits to Belfast in a 14 month period. The September'65 show (captured in "Charlie is My Darling") was their last to date.

The ABC is long gone, alas, and is now the Jurys Inn Hotel. The Ulster Hall is still a great music venue and has been there since 1862. It's the venue where Led Zeppelin first played "Stairway to Heaven" and a few other songs off their fourth album in 1971.

The Stones gig there in July 1964 ended prematurely due to a riot as mentioned above. Some girls were reported as being taken out of the venue in straightjackets. The Stones were playing only their fourth song of the night when it was abandoned. The newspaper report Ive read of that gig actually said it only lasted eight minutes.

A woman I used to work with was at both this gig and (as she was on holiday with her parents) the infamous one in Blackpool seven days earlier where the band were lucky to escape with their lives after Keith kicked a drunken Scotsman in the face for spitting at him and Brian.
