Post by angee on Dec 22nd, 2014 at 1:30pm
Hi, everyone,
After a long period of working on this,  interviewing fans, including a few from Rocks Off,  and writing, the book is up on Amazon in paperback.
In a few weeks, you can get the ebook and read inside with the "Look Inside the Book" feature.

http://www.amazon.com/You-Get-What-Need-Stories/dp/1939282330/

Many thanks to participants and to any future readers of the tome, and to all of you fans of The Rolling Stones.

Feel free to send me questions or reactions in IM, in email (andeedotgmail.com) or post in here.

I got my own book today! In a few minutes I was on page 25!

Very good reading, a real dissertation on psychology of the fans, LOL we were described as "Rocks Off is a Little bit too wild and crazy" and "the irreverent tone of Rocks Off comes from its membership, supported by the leadership, there is even more joshing, jesting and personal slamming, pseudo or real, here than the other two places" (Shidoobee and IORR)

Now I see angee reads the Joey thread and RO in general

Really loved the quick read of chapter two! I finally am in a same book with Timothy Leary! WOW

Fantastic work angee, congratulations and yes… I’m waiting for the movie!!!!!

Yep, that's me.

Got my first home computer in late '96 or so.
Hooked up to that fancy Internet thang, and promptly punched in "Rolling Stones" into the old Webcrawler search engine (with the spider that everyone got when they bought a Windows system I think).

Found Stonesworld and the games began - late '96 and early '97.  Then Stonesworld went belly up, and Exile from Stonesworld cropped up.  That place had a full blown meltdown and then a bunch of us ended up at different message boards.  I ended up at Lew's which used the same format as the old Stonesworld (cascading threads).

Ended up here because it is truly the asylum!!
Hard to believe almost 20 years a posting!

The C10 movie grossed over $ 250, 000 , 000  [ U.S. Dollars  ]  in the United States ALONE  ( World Wide Figures are reported to be nearly 3 Billion  [ Again , U.S. Dollars   ]  ) and won seven Academy Awards  ( Best Editing  , Screenplay  , Directing , Costume Design  , Sound , Cinematography  ,  Lighting   .   Amazingly the movie did not win any awards for Acting    --  which is surprising as nearly every individual present put on the performance of a friggin lifetime pretending that they enjoyed The Lugar's presence throughout the weekend    .... but I digress  )  .   Unfortunately there was not much demand for the movie over in South East Asia  ( Go Figure )   .  I STILL have not seen a dime / cut of ANY of the box office receipts ( ... not to mention a cut of the money from all the C10 action figures [ complete with Man- Gina  ( " Hog's "  )  ] ,  posters , tees ,  restaurants  , novelty shops , theme parks , Winnebago's , etc ...............  WTF ?   )   .

The Couch ?!

Really ?!  :

" I can't be held responsible for blown behaviour
I lost all contact with my only saviour
No-one locked me out because I failed to phone up
I can't bear to live forever like a loner

Don't let go the couch

It's easy to be sad: when you lack a partner
But how would I react to a broken heart now
It ain't really true rock and roll unless I'm
Hanging onto you and when I hold it next time

I won't let go the couch

I try to explain but you never understand it
I need your body but I can't just demand it
I won't let go like a stray at heel
(Never let it out of your sight)
Every lonely wife knows the way I feel
(Don't let go tonight)
Don't let go the couch
Never let go the couch

Your friends all pass for life is just a market
But you have to finish everything you started
So I live my life tearing down the runway
Sure to get the hang of hanging in there someday

Don't let go the couch
Won't get no more chances - forget the war dances
Go blind and hang on - don't try the slang son
Never let go the Couch  !!!!  "

Actually "Howe hilarious"

I know Dandelion did not film it because she was not there, unless she was disguised as Stonesalot.  Doubtful.  Not a strong resemblance at all.

I believe, if memory serves, that both FPM and SDH filmed their separate drives to Cleveland, and maybe even the hotel and other items.

I did not film it, and I was not there the first day when everyone else was -- I missed Maxmeister's Vesuvius imitation , for example.

I met up with the rest of them on Saturday at the RRHOF for the memorabilia show, and then we lunched at the Hard Rock, bought New York strips at the local mart, and drank home-brew Milk Stout that 2000Man provided.  Again, if memory serves, he and some friends leased some commercial brewing equipment at a local Cleveland brewery, and he got a fridge full of a most delicious Stout.  Of course we ran out of gas and light during the cooking of the steaks, but we all ripped raw meat with our teeth by a bonfire in 2000 Man's backyard, so it was all cool.

Tom, yeah, thanks, good thoughts, more of youse, next time!

Hey, I really enjoyed that three-part video, pre-9/11, those were the days.  You could go and meet people at their gates, what a concept!  Looks to be a whole lotta comaraderie among the boys in the gang there!

The film has a "Jim Jarmusch" sort of feel to it.  I looked him up, and darned if he isn't from Cuyahoga Heights, near Cleveland.

Hmm, Ken-no or Key-no?

Some Guy  ..........................

The most important thing to remember about the Maxlugar is that in real life he is a very big / tall man who thus encompasses all of the strengths and weaknesses of a big / tall man ( See : LBJ , 1963 - 1969  )  .

OUL professor releases book on Rolling Stones' fans

Posted: Thursday, January 22, 2015 1:00 am

LANCASTER – Ohio University Lancaster Emeritus Associate Professor of Sociology Andrea J. Baker has put her love of the Rolling Stones and its fans into her new book “You Get What You Need: Stories of Fans of the Rolling Stones.”

The book examines the online life of the fans of the Rolling Stones and the online communities of which those fans are a part. Baker’s book is billed as a book for anyone who likes rock music or has ever followed a band. Experiences of Rolling Stones fans of different ages, from different countries, and from different fan boards form the basis of this book. Baker interviewed more than 100 fans from 2007 to the present. The only thing the fans have in common is their passion for the music and performances of The Rolling Stones.

“What I found was all of the old things fans used to do, like wait in long lines to buy tickets, were changed dramatically by participating in these online communities,” said Baker.

The book was released on Amazon by Miniver Press for sale at the end of December. Baker was inspired to look at the lives of Rolling Stones’ fans because she is a big fan herself.

“I was a fan of the Rolling Stones early on after seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show, and one thing I noticed very early on was my parents became speechless which was not something that happened too often,” said Baker. “So I knew I had to pay attention to the band.”

Baker’s book examines how the online communities of Rolling Stones’ fans are focused on getting and finding tickets. Fans plan events around the shows online. During the shows, fans post set lists online and make videos of the shows. Then they discuss what was played and how it was played online after the show.

“The social part of the fan experience used to be waiting in line for tickets,” said Baker. “Now that time is spent in your own home.”

The book is available in a Kindle version or in paperback. You can find the book on Amazon.com by searching “Andrea J. Baker” or the book’s title “You Get What You Need: Stories of Fans of the Rolling Stones.”

LANCASTER – It was 1965 when Andrea J. Baker first saw the Rolling Stones play rock ’n’ roll on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

She knew there had never been another band like them, but there were many that followed.

The Stones’ eerie, sexualized, bluesy/rock sound with interesting lyrics of stories and life intrigued Baker, a high-schooler at the time the Stones were breaking out in the United States market.

“I just kind of captured me,” she said. “The fact that my parents didn’t know what to make of it — that was a draw too.”

Baker’s love for the Stones grew from there, prompting her to attend more than 20 of their concerts and eventually leading her down a path of professional pursuits in studying the band and its fans.

Baker, an Ohio University-Lancaster emeritus associate professor of sociology, combined her love for the Stones, their fans and study of human behavior for her latest published work: “You Get What You Need: Stories of Fans of the Rolling Stones.”

“You Get What you Need” was published by Miniver Press at the end of December, giving readers an inside look at the Stones’ fan culture. Baker interviewed more than 100 fans from 2007 to 2013 found in various online communities.

The idea, she said, was to examine the online life of die-hard fans of the Stones and the online fan boards they take part in.

“The social part of the fan experience used to be waiting in line for tickets,” Baker said. “Now that time is spent in your own home.”

Baker heard many stories from fans along the way attempting to meet the band members or at least get a closer look at them performing on stage.

One of the stories included fans climbing up an electrical tower for a better view, which followed with security guards attacking them and trying to get them down. Baker said it didn’t take long for the band singer Mick Jagger to tell them that what they were doing was dangerous and they had better get down.

“That’s what people live for in a way, even if the attention isn’t really positive,” Baker said.

Baker met one of the Stones’ band members, guitarist Ron Wood, who she said is supposed to be the friendliest to fans of all the members, at his art show in Las Vegas.

“He shakes my hand and says, ‘Thanks for coming,’ ” Baker recalled of her interaction with Wood.

Like many fans, Baker said, she wants to meet the rest of the band someday, and she has plans to send some of the band members copies of her book.

“I just want them to read it,” she said.

In addition to Baker’s fascination with the Stones, she also is interested in people’s interactions online. That has become a theme in her published work, including her first book published in 2005, titled “Double Click: Romance and Commitment Among Online Couples.”

Baker’s newest book, “You Get What You Need: Stories of Fans of the Rolling Stones,” is available in Kindle version or in paperback at Amazon.com by searching “Andrea J. Baker” or the book’s title.

Interesting insight, CS!

For anyone who might be around next Friday Feb. 20 at 7 pm eastern time in the US (EST), I will be on, talking about the book for a little while
at the start of "Ripper's Rarities" radio show.

The show runs from 7-10 pm out of Sarasota Florida on WSLR.  Listening options, such as iTunes, are shown under the "Schedule" menu tab at: http://wslr.org/show/rippers-rarities.  Ripper (aka Russ Bodice) often plays deeper cuts, including live ones, and this coming week is an all-Rolling Stones show!
