Title: The early days!!!!!! Post by BobD on Oct 23rd, 2014 at 4:04pm
Thought this little bit of info might give someone a chuckle.
Who knew that Brian tried to replace Mick ?? I was the vocalist with Ritchie Blackmore's first band "The Dominators". Dave (Screaming Lord) Sutch used to come and watch us shortly before the Dominators broke up. I followed The Savages for some while until Ritchie left for the first time in Oct.'62, so I knew the lads in the band. In the severe winter of '63 I rolled up at the Station Hotel Richmond to see "Savages" Ricky Brown and Carlo sitting in with a new band. With the weather conditions it was not unusual for bands to arrive late or not at all ! It would seem that the singer had not arrived at the start and Rick, knowing that I sang a lot of the old rock/blues standards suggested to me that I might do a couple of songs to fill in. Apart from Little Walters "My Babe" and a couple of Chuck Berry standards the rest of my "set" is lost in my memory.Later I was approached by Brian ( I think) who suggested I might consider making my efforts more regular !!! My having a deep/low singing voice he made the comment that it was more suited to blues than their regular vocalist !!!!!!! That is NOT a blues voice I remember him saying, nodding towards the singer !!!!!!!!!!! Approaching the end of an apprenticeship with BOAC I was not about to embark on a full time spot in a band which, to be honest apart from Ricky Brown (bass) and Carlo Little (drums) sounded crap; considering some of the guys that I had played with in the Dominators. I thanked Brian but "no thanks". He did however buttonhole me a couple of times later on with a similar offer. I'd love to know what Mick would think of the fact that Brian didn't have a very high opinion of his vocal prowess early on. The funny thing is, I only put the whole story together when I read the early '63 set list on this website. I knew that Ricky and Carlo were "auditioned" but only when I read where and when did the penny drop that "I woz there". For the record I think you will find that they didn't have too high an opinion of the lads in the early days either. I would also question the exact timing of Rick and Carlo's "audition" I would have thought it was a month or so later ?? Anyway I was far too good looking for that lot (lol). BobD. |

Welcome, Bob!
Sooner or later, someone's gonna ask your opinion of Undercover. I'd like to hear more about the "early days." |

So Brian was not a fan of MICK's voice? I believe it!
