Post by steel driving hammer on Oct 5th, 2014 at 5:26pm
Who was the first to say that?

For me, it never did.

But Rap music did happen sorry to say.

I think rock and roll is here to stay though.

That is too bad...NY in the late 70's (which I barley got a glimpse of) and 80's was AMAZING for Punk...and DC was as well with respect to Hardcore...Being only 13 in 1977, I often felt I was born about 5 years too late

Rock and Roll is on life support...even good current bands are barely a blip on the radar...

The Stones need a milestone like "50 and Counting" to stay relevant...U2 needs a
cause ( (red) ) and and literally give away it's latest CD to make a mark....other bands...Jack White...freakish talent who seems to do no wrong as long as he keeps reinventing himself a bit...like Clapton in the 60's-70's (who??), a new band every 18 months...Foo Fighters...Dylan...a true, deserving  fan base...but nothing else...Prince...true genius that will never fit in...Neil Young...always (well mostly anyway) a god-like figure who is also with a well deserved fan base, but nothing else in the music industry stratosphere...

I now struggle to come up with any other names...I know they are there...but again...not with any idea of longevity like when RnR ruled the airwaves along with Soul, Disco, Motown, and RnB...

You make liquid shit drip Joey with your stupid comments…
for something you say never happened, it is beyond strange that tens of thousand of bands have made punk music, and many have not only had success, it had such an impact, it even made bands like The Stones re-think their own direction…

'Punk rock' is a phrase used by dilettantes and heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies, the bodies, the hearts, the souls, the time and the minds of young men who give everything they have to it.

That's pretty well done and sadly true.  I'm sure there are some (Sir Stonesalot types) who can say I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, and then reel off the names of a dozens bands I've never heard of and never will (and who if I sample on youtube, will sound just like revved up or bluesed up wannabes from any decade), but rock and roll seems to be dying a sad and slow death.

thank fuck it happened.

A universe dominated by bands like Yes, ELP, Rush and the like would have seen rock n roll disappear up it's own pretentious arse sooner rather than later.

Thank god for Dave Grohl and Oi! and streetpunk bands, there about the only ones doing triage!!!

Steel Driving Hammer…
He's trying to be relevant in post-irrelevant type of way.
Seems he got sirmoonie to buy into it a bit, he thinks naming bands that he hasn't heard of, may add credibilty to this…
which in rebuttal, I say rhetorically, tell me more about an experience you haven't had… seems like a really bad argument when discussing the impact of a genre of music that changed music for decades!!! But I like Moonie, so whatever!

I don't understand this thread either. But the phrase 'like punk never happened' is the title of a book on UK music from the '80's that I've been meaning to read for years but haven't yet. Supposedly it's quite good.

The whole entire album Tattoo You was as if Punk never even happened.

I don't like disco but disco affected The Stones more than Punk.

Just look at Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You which both albums were written during about the late 70's.

The entire Tattoo You tour was a direct response to what was called "punk", what with accelerated tempos even faster than the '78 tour, and free-wheeling, raw and tremendously wild guitar playing.

Jagger has always known what's going on musically, and it's pretty obvious that Some Girls left-overs such as Hangfire, Little T&A and the more recent Neighbors were all written, performed, and mixed in response to the numerous great young bands often called 'punk rock' bands who had been reviving the rock n' roll spirit for the last few years.

Had it been full of seven minute guitar solos, sword & sorcery type epics and mini operas you may have a point.

Instead half of it consisted of shouty, three minute, three chord guitar based rockers. Most of which were recorded around 1977-79 when punk was at it's height.

And most of the other half were ballads which pre-dated the entire genre.

Hold on, my comment that you are referring to was in response to the rock is dead sub-theme here.  With respect to "punk never happened" statement, I am in complete agreement with Gazza: "thank fuck it happened."

Because old blues was not famous at the time, for white folks.

Like some black people say "Word Up"

Come on face it my Stones Brothers!

Many white people didn't show up for those GREAT Bluesmen anyway.

So fuck racism also cause Blues fucking ROCKS.

Blues is my 2nd favorite music btw.

Cheers nonetheless.
