Title: LA Forum '75 DVD to be released officially 17 November
Post by Gazza on Sep 2nd, 2014 at 5:29pm

Press release :

“From The Vault” is a new series of live concerts from The Rolling Stones archive which are getting their first official release. “L.A. Forum – Live In 1975” is the second title in this series. The Rolling Stones’ “Tour Of The Americas ‘75” was the band’s first tour with new guitarist Ronnie Wood. Even before the dates started there were dramatic scenes in New York City at the official tour announcement when the band unexpectedly turned up on a flatbed truck to play “Brown Sugar”. After a couple of low key warm-up shows in Louisiana the tour took in 44 dates between the 3rd June and the 8th August 1975. They settled into the L.A. Forum for a five night stint from July 9th to 13th and this concert film features the show from July 12th. The footage has now been carefully restored and the sound has been newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain for this first official release of the show.

Simultaneous release on DVD, DVD+2CD and DVD+3LP.

The Rolling Stones profile remains extremely high following their 50th Anniversary tour and releases

Full length 2½ hour concert of The Rolling Stones performing at their very best.

This release is a bit baffling.

Two weeks after the Hampton '81 box set? Why the rush?

No blu-ray?

And according to the press release, the DVD comes from the 12th July show . The circulating pro shot comes from the 11th and the Stones Archive download (which is presumably the same as what's on the CD of this release) is the 13th July show.

There's never been anything to suggest the 12th July show was filmed. Dare we rely on the accuracy of the press release?

If the DVD IS the 12th July show, I'll be delighted. A blu-ray would have been even better.

It would also be a bonus if the CDs are not the 13th July show, otherwise this is showing all the signs of another ruse to get us to re-buy all the Stones Archive releases all over again. All five shows were professionally recorded by the Rolling Stones Mobile Unit.

Releasing it the same month as Hampton 81 though is utter insanity. Two box sets in the same month? Whats the hurry? Is the world coming to an end or something?

I wouldnt be surprised if thy took the "best" performances from the run of shows and spliced them together to make it look like a single night. Regardless LA75 sure was a great run. Still have the vinyl boot of one of the shows.

Gazza, the release prior to the end of November coincides with the largest Christmas shopping day in the USA over our 4 day Thanksgiving week end. My hunch is they are targeting that.

With two multi-disc releases in the space of two weeks?

These are UK sites, and the bulk of the world market is outside the US.

I doubt there's an awful lot of releasable shows pre-1989 that they could put on DVD and blu-ray.

Makes sense to space such releases out a bit.

I see rs.com have finally announced this release - and  theyre still advertising it as being the 12th July show.

I e-mailed Bob Clearmountain a few days ago to ask if that date is correct and that its NOT the same show that has been circulated for years and which the Stones official page posted footage from previously. Hopefully he'll reply.

It is from LA - so presumably its from the upcoming DVD.

Its an upgraded version of the show thats been in circulation for years and which has been bootlegged as coming from Friday 11th July.

So, either the bootleggers are wrong or the official channels are incorrect in saying its 12th July.

Either way, its NOT a previously uncirculated DVD. But it is, of course, a better quality version

haha...just saw that, gimmekeef. I've no connection to Bob at all, unfortunately. And he didnt reply.

The DVD is definitely from 11th July, not 12th July as stated on the press release and DVD booklet itself. It's been re-edited slightly (as well as being a significant upgrade in quality) but its the same show thats been doing the rounds for decades. It seems its the only one of the five LA Forum shows that was filmed.

The audio is from Sunday 13th July. So, its the same show that was released as part of the 'Stones Archive' download series in 2012.

An opportunity missed. Its obviously unrealistic to expect a different show on DVD if none were filmed, but a bit of better research wouldnt have gone amiss in getting the date right.

Disappointing though that the CD isnt from one of the other four nights (although 13/7/75 is a very good show and certainly superior to the 11th July performance) because all five nights were recorded by the Rolling Stones Mobile for use on 'Love You Live' (the basic track for 'Sympathy' on the live album comes from the 9th July show, although the released version has two minutes chopped off and a sizeable amount of overdubbing (especially the vocals) added)

Gazza, completely agree with you on lost opportunities for LA 75, but take solace that we've got 2 1975 shows in pristine sound and quality as well as Hampton 81 available - it's great. It also rectifies some of the past release mistakes and pretty much, at least for me, leaves Love You Live (except the El Mocambo side), Still Life, and Let's Spend the Night Together to gather dust. I  also don't think Four Flicks will be viewed in the next decade.

Title: Re: LA Forum '75 DVD to be released officially 17 November
Post by Gazza on Nov 18th, 2014 at 10:15am
oh, I'm pleased to see its coming out. But three different shows instead of two wouldnt have been that hard to do. If youre going to aim a project at collectors, then it makes sense to maximise the likelihood of them buying each release.

The Stones Archives download series was very welcome and enjoyable - but re-issuing them all again on vinyl/CD (Brussels Affair was already issued on vinyl - if you wanted to pay several hundred quid for a couple of concert tickets) is a bit of a swizz, which is sadly typical of Stones Inc.

And it pisses me off, that with all the various permutations of the Hampton release, that if I want to buy the CD AND the best video quality release (ie, blu ray) of what is one of my favourite shows,  I have to buy it twice.  You could get Sweet Summer Sun in multiple formats in the same deluxe package, so its really not rocket science.

'Lets Spend The night Together;' is visually terrific, but musically unlistenable due to having something like 22 songs edited to fit into a 90 minute movie, effectively removing about half an hour of music. Unfortunately, it'll never get a 'directors cut' with the missing footage restored.

Bought it today and tried to watch it.
Just a big disappointment that is.
Mostly filmed either from far away or from the back.
After a few songs I decided that I had enough seen of Ollie Brown's back.

Wished instead of this they had released the 1976 'Live at the Abattoire' that was
so much better filmed.

Shit happens. Just my 2 cts.

Just got this yesterday and think it's fantastic. The DVD looks fine (not a big fan of HD anyway) and I actually like the back of the stage shots, very interesting perspective.

The CD show sounds great, and this era ('75-'77) has always been one of my fave era's for the band, especially for Charlie's drumming. Too bad the El Mocombo gigs didn't get filmed or more usable audio.
Hilarious how on "Happy" Keith completely fucks up and turns the beat around and Charlie has to quick play catch-up.

This could be a really great series ('From the Vaults') if Stones Inc. stick with it, maybe as great as Dylan's 'Bootleg Series'.

Absolutely, SCL. I'm guessing we'll never get 'Get Your Leeds Lungs Out' due to the first two songs being missing (pretty low energy gig anyway, IMO), and I don't understand why they didn't add the CDs for 'Ladies and Gentlemen...' - or maybe the '72 Philly tapes cleaned up a bit.
But yeah, this could really be a very exciting project - never mind when they start digging into the studio stuff! (btw - what ever happened to the expanded 'Sticky Fingers' release?).

Title: Re: LA Forum '75 DVD to be released officially 17 November

No idea.

Always thought it was a potentially strange choice anyway, seeing as we've had an expanded Exile and about half the songs on BOTH the original Exile and the extra disc originate from the Sticky Fingers sessions  (or earlier)

Have never really been convinced that there's much mileage in expanded versions of old albums, personally. The two they did put out, while very enjoyable musically, were only fully realised due to a combination of new overdubs, new lyrics and questionable research regarding the authenticity of the dates given for the original basic tracks (eg "Title 5" is no more an 'Exile' outtake than "Doom and Gloom" is, and some of the songs on disc 2 of "Some Girls" werent even begun until after the original album was released)

I'm unconvinced that there are that many finished original songs in the Stones vaults. Most of what is finished are covers or alternate takes of released material. Its pretty evident from the hundreds of studio bootlegs down the years that finished lyrics and final vocal takes are added pretty late on in the recording process, which pretty much makes the chances of most Stones albums having a surplus of several finished songs as highly implausible - if they're finishing lyrics at the eleventh hour to get a record ready they're very unlikely to waste resources on finishing lots of extra songs.

I think you'd be lucky to assemble a 3-CD set of finished outtakes spanning their entire studio recording career. And probably about half of those would be covers like "Still a Fool", "Drift Away", "For Your Precious Love" and the like.
