Title: New Eagle Rock DVD release - Hampton '81 - and more to come!!!

FROM THE VAULT – HAMPTON COLISEUM – LIVE IN 1981
The Rolling Stones DV Release: 03 November 2014 Catalog No.: EREDV1052 Barcode: 5034504105270

“From The Vault” is a new series of live concerts from The Rolling Stones archive which are getting their first official release.

“Hampton Coliseum – Live In 1981” is the first title in this series. The Rolling Stones American Tour in 1981 was the most successful tour of that year taking a then record $50 million dollars in ticket sales. The tour was in support of the critically and commercially successful “Tattoo You” album. There were fifty dates on the tour which ran from Philadelphia at the end of September through to Hampton, Virginia on the 18th and 19th of December. The show on December 18th, which was also Keith Richards’ birthday, was the first ever music concert to be broadcast on television as a pay-per-view event.

The footage has now been carefully restored and the sound has been newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain for this first official release of the show.

Opinions...remixing/color corrections aside...how do you think this will compare to LSTNT?

I was at the NJ shows for the indoor filming portions of that film...(dont know if there were other indoor shows in it)...

LSTNT is visually wonderful, but a mess of a film with all the cuts.

88 minutes of music with about 22 songs, at a time when they were playing 24-25 songs in concerts lasting about two and a quarter hours.

The only shows used were the Sun Devil Stadium gig in Arizona for the outdoor footage and the first and second of the three shows at the Meadowlands (5th and 6th November)

They probably needed a bit of restoring for this release as I think it was shot on videotape?

Its a fantastic gig that should have been released a long time ago. I'm intrigued by what else there will be in this series as I cant imagine there's much from earlier in that era that was filmed that we dont know about.

I have a friend who works for Eagle Rock who told me Hampton '81 was ready to be released last November but was pushed back by Sweet Summer Sun, so it took them a year to release something that was ready nearly a year ago? He has told me what they have coming eventually, I just hope I live long enough to see/hear the real gems he has told me about!

I read the Hampton show was recorded to videotape, so this won't be available as a high definition blu-ray. It will be standard definition.

Ahh man, that's a drag. The 81/82 tours are to me the last tours where the Stones still ruled. There's gotta be something of better quality in their vaults. If they could find Leeds '82...

The audio will be great on this.

High Def is only available for film elements, not video from that era.

These are the ones that jump out at me the most, in no particular order...a three or four DVD set of the Stripped concerts in London, Paris and Amsterdam...the 1999 San Jose No Security U.S. tour finale, originally scheduled to be shown on Showtime but withdrawn...Shepherd's Bush '99 with some excellent rarities...the Licks tour theater shows...it's early in the morning for me and I can't remember all of them but these make my head spin!

L&G and Live in texas '78 were filmed for cinema release, though - wouldnt that be superior to something just being shot on video tape ? (16mm, as SW says above)

(the 1978 one was originally supposed to come out as a movie at the time, but it was shelved)

The fact that they started uploading videos from Leeds 82 on their youtube channel around the time the audio download release came out would suggest to me that the whole thing was filmed - presumably for posterity, in case it turned out to be their final gig!

Oh good holy fuck. I was at that one - dont remember noticing much in the way of cameras at it at the time, but coincidentally enough I was burning a copy of the audience dvd about 3 days ago, watched a bit of it, noticed a cameraman filming onstage and wondered 'why would he be doing that when this was a theatre show'?

We already know there's pro shots in circulation of the theatre shows in Munich '03 plus (in much more limited circulation) Brixton '95. so it'd be great to see more extensive releases of stuff like that.

Still think pre-1981 DVD's are going to be very thin on the ground though, which is a pity as they'd be good sellers. The Stones didnt really do much TV after 1969 and there was otherwise no real need to film their shows throughout the 70's unless it was for a potential broadcast or movie.

SD-Blu ray is correct, see the cover

The formats, as I understand it are :

1. DVD
2. Standard Blu-ray
3. DVD & double CD
4. DVD & triple vinyl

Gazza, 16mm was vastly superior to what was being done on video during those years. It's only been over the past 15 years or so that video has achieved a high enough visual quality.

When I mentioned this on Shidoobie several people said they want a Brian Jones era proshot concert, I asked him about it and he said the only Brian era stuff he'd seen was Charlie Is My Darling, R&R Circus and the Ed Sullivan shows. You are right about there not being too much pre-1981 shows filmed, I know since 1989 they've filmed every one via their screen feeds for the shows ala Voodoo At Halloween in Oakland.

A classic line Available on the classic STILL LIFE (American Tour 1981)
What a waste of good vinyl...
What was the reason for that release???

It got pretty good reviews at a time when new Stones releases generally didnt. In the UK anyway.

I'm hoping that the new DVD/blu ray will include the extended Hampton backstage scenes in 'sheep vision'.

Maybe we'll also get a modern day interview with the young girl at the start of the broadcast who had all the local TV or radio  station logos painted over her naked body. Although as she's probably middle aged with about six kids by now, I hope they wont ask her to re-enact her performance ...

Lots of folks backstage there who are sadly no longer with us...

Stu, Joe Seabrook, Freddy Sessler, Chuch Magee, Bill Graham.....

Keith embracing Marlon and Angela at the end just before he goes onstage is really sweet, I think.

I found it a weak vehicle to just present a new (cover version) for MTV...Going To a Go-Go...which i happen to think is a highlight on the album...
aside from the Intro/Outro...30% of the album is /are covers...
for a 10 song live album...kinda weird, innit? Here is a review from RS Magazine:

well, singles from live albums is a pretty crappy idea, to begin with. This was the first time theyd ever done one.

The version of 'Going to a Go Go' from Largo on 'Still Life' isnt that good. The Hampton version (which they used for the promo video) was far better.

That clip was first shown a few weeks before my first Stones show in July 1982. As a result, I've probably watched that one performance more times than any other clip in history. To the point where I can copy every one of Mick's arse wiggles in my sleep and 32 years later could probably identify in the street pretty much every audience member that the cameras focussed in on. Its brilliantly edited.

(the other verison of the video with the nightclub scene edited in is toe-curlingly awful, though)

RS Official App(?) is now touting both '81 & '75 release and have posted Shattered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj96Tau44OA

Nothing new, but obviously best quality ever. I can now clearly see Keith switching the pick up toggle and finally confirm that he turns off the phase during the bridge/solo.

Just picked up the SD Blu-Ray from Best Buy . . . who had to retrieve it from the stock room for me after i was told that if it isn't on the shelf, they don't have it. My showing them it listed as 'in stock' on their website from my phone allowed me to spend money there. No wonder they're struggling. . .

The booklet is zero insight and rife with errors, including citing Bobby as playing the sax on Waiting on a Friend. Is their no quality control or review of this crap?

The tattooed naked girl begins the disc in all of her natural glory. Greatly edited backstage scenes that many of us know follow. We don't get Keith's coked plea for rehearsal nor any sheep. A bit of the ping pong game and the tuning room are included (no jamming with Thorogood - probably couldn't get rid of the distortion) and the line up in the hallway before taking the stage is largely intact.

I don't remember every frame from the bootleg, but it's seemingly the entire show as broadcast - including, for what it's worth, the between song comment about a Turkish taxi drivers jock strap and feedback before Imagination.

Time is on My Side contains the Still Life overdubbed vocals as well as some dubbed vocals for Miss You that was broadcast on KBFH. Intact backing vocals seem mixed down, but overall the surround sound is FANTASTIC. Great sounding and clear guitars, Bill's bass is thumping - it's better than I'd hoped.

Since its standard definition, don't expect HD quality - some of the colors run, etc. You'll despise the color green after viewing, but again it's obviously the best quality video ever and it's great, despite the familiarity of Hampton, to have it in this quality.

You'll despise the color green after viewing, but again it's obviously the best quality video ever and it's great, despite the familiarity of Hampton, to have it in this quality.

it's out already?

I got it. They did not have it out for sale. The first person told me they could order it. The 2nd person told me they had 4 in stock but they would need to order the 75 show. They turned it back over to the first employee to locate it. He was busy with a customer and would return. I went back over to the dvd section where a guy was putting out new dvd's. He goes to the back and gets me my copy on blueray!

I will be in seclusion.

Agreed. Again, there's nothing surprising to see, but the quality of the video is good and the OUTSTANDING audio on the Blu-Ray in surround sound is tremendous - it's '72 Tele Custom heaven - I miss that tone.

Avoid the booklet - it'll only frustrate.

Just got Hampton today, watched with me sister. Tremendous sound and great visual. Never seen/heard the boot of this show. Clearmountain did a fantastic re-mixing job, so much better than his work on 'Still Life' - that cloudy, mushy sound he had back in the early '80s as a producer. Listening to the CDs now - makes 'Still Life' fairly redundant (though I do love Keiths backing vocals on "Going to a Go-go", even if they were overdubbed).

I just received my 3 LP +dvd  LA 75 this morning !!

One word  FANTASTIC sound and vision , the dvd quality is awesome , the packaging is also with a terrible picture of Keith with his macabre Zemaitis 5 strings guitar .
really it's a pleasure ...
They put a sticker on it " les archives des Rolling Stones , enfin éditées ! "
Happy is a highlight , Keith teeth werent so brights as today.

does it make sense to buy the Blu-ray, instead of the DVD.

Cos the footage is old as fuck, so I doubt
it makes a difference..?
