Title: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Hypnotic Eye
Post by Maxmeister on Aug 2nd, 2014 at 4:28pm
This album is a must have whether you are a Petty fan or not.

It's a straight up, jamming, tight, rocking album a bit reminiscent of their early albums but definitely 2014 fresh.

Eleven tracks at 45 mins. with no duds.  It just doesn't get much better.

Whether your preference is cd, ITunes, Rhapsody or whatever, do your self a favor and procure this album ASAP. I promise you will be rocking big time.

Rick

It's all about the music........and the beer of course!

This track reminds me of the Stones. Keef-esque riff, rock solid Watts-like drumming, and harmonica like Mick.

I love it.

I'm buying it!  I love Tom Petty music.  What a great rock and roller Gainesville's number one son has been all these years.

Chart Watch: Tom Petty's Record-Setting American Band

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a73/LadyJane1/Hear_Tom_Petty_s_Old-School_Rocker-8de08e54b3da0d1320cc51841cef1efd.jpg

Nearly 37 years after first cracking The Billboard 200 with their eponymous debut album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have finally landed their first No. 1 album with Hypnotic Eye. This constitutes a new record for an American band. That's fitting, because Petty and the Heartbreakers, which formed in Florida and found their footing in Los Angeles, are a quintessential American band. Their debut album included the classic "American Girl."

This is the 15th top 10 album of Petty's career. That tally that includes nine albums with the Heartbreakers, three solo albums, two albums as a member of Traveling Wilburys, and one as a member of Mudcrutch. Hypnotic Eye is Petty's first No. 1, period, with or without the Heartbreakers

Petty and his band had climbed as high as No. 2 twice, with Damn the Torpedoes (which logged seven weeks in the runner-up spot in 1980) and Mojo (one week at No. 2 in 2010).

They're in San Francisco this weekend for the Outside Lands Festival. Haven't heard much of Hypnotic Eye. But congrats to Tom and band. Longtime fan. Seen them many times. Always good. Tough to get excited about an arena or festival show after seeing the at the Fillmore twice and at the Fonda in LA last year. Don't wanna hear the hits. Too many deep cuts I want to hear. Like this gem.

One thing I'd like to check with you guys: whenever I hear the opening of Fault Lines I think Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are about to cover Walk Like An Egyptian by The Bangles. Does anyone else hear it or am I nuts? Just checkin..

Me too.

I like the first track, but tracks 2-5 are weak.

Tracks 6+ are much better - they should have changed the order and it would have helped bury some of the weak numbers.

Then again, I didn't care for Highway Companion until about the 10th listen.  Sometimes Tom takes a few good listens.

Tom Petty is awesome, and so is Neil Young. I was dumb enough to think that they were "overrated", but I was wrong.

The acoustic Wildflowers is an underrated Petty album.

I agree that some of the tracks off Hypnotic Eye sound like Petty from the first two albums.  But I hear shades of Long After Dark too.  And two of the tracks (Fault Lines and another I can't recall) have a very spanish sound, which is different than most anything I can recall from Petty.

Red River and All You Can Carry are the weakest tracks for me.

American Dream is great but my fave is Burnt Out Town. Nice blues track that sounds like it could have done by a band that we all seem to worship for some reason.

I don't skip any tracks when playing. It's not often that I get off on a complete album on first listen[super rare the past 2-3 decades] and it just gets better.

I'm ready for my first Petty concert 9/25.

Rick

I have just joined a Tom Petty tribute band as the Scott Thurston guy but am fairly new to his stuff besides the big hits.

Any deep cuts/gems I should drop everything and listen to?

Funny thing Maxmeister, All You Can Carry is probably my favorite track on the album. So to each his own I guess.

@Bucks: not exactly a deep cut, but IMO you can't be a Tom Petty tribute band if you don't play Rebels. There's this outstanding take on that song by DBT, see if you guys can raise the bar even further..

There are a ton of great Petty deep cuts that he doesn't play nearly enough of live. Anything off the first album that isn't Breakdown or American Girl comes to mind.As well as this gem off of Hard Promises.

I was doing pretty good until today.

The Philly show is Monday.
I have been trying not to think about it.
Although the set lists and reviews are amazing.

And work has been a little slow lately, and I just got over a nasty ass bout with food poisoning, so I have laid off the sauce and rested for a few whilst the antibios do their thing.

Getting a little bored, you know?
Idle hands are the devil's playground, and right now, with a looming weekend and show…..the devil's playground is newly refurbished!!

There are other issues…complications, if you know what I mean.
I know a certain other partner in crime that is struggling with the same issue.
Some time on his hands, going to the same show, getting close to the weekend…..

And then there is the new release.
It really is pretty good Petty -- and it sounds better as the show nears.  That doesn't really help the situation.
First you listen a bit, then you air guitar, then you go plug in and really try to rip it.

It's Thursday, son.
Calm down.

Okay, okay…..calm down.
Hydrate.
Just hydrate….

Philly was good. He did all of the big hits and about 4 new cuts. No deep cuts at all.

Some things I noticed from my floor seats:

1. The new songs were reason to go get two more beers.
2. Every song was a singalong.
3.  Tom Petty die hards gave the new material a great response.
4. The sound system was good, but not nearly as good as what the Stones show sounded like.
