Title: Brian's performance on 'Rock n' Roll Circus' question.
Post by Mr. Yeats on Jul 23rd, 2014 at 9:39pm
On the official release, Brian's guitar is mixed so low as to be nearly inaudible (other than his slide on "No Expectations"). Does anyone know (Gazza?) why this was: was it really bad playing or out of tune. And too, are there raw mixes that have his guitar more prominently in the mix (I realize that the released performances were the last of many, very early in the morning after a long day of filming/recording).

Can anyone shed any light on this? Cheers.

I ask myself the same. Itīs frustrating to watch. His playing on No Expectations is beautiful, and he seems to be doing right on the other songs. Why the world was not allowed to listen?

They should release the rehearsals too, and remix Brian's guitar. From what I can tell h was alreight there, and they played stuff even like 'Confessing The Blues'' on the rehearsals

I would guess that technology also played a serious role in this...this was 1968...recorded for the telly...remember, TVs back then had a speaker...again A speaker...likely about 3-4 inches across...TV broadcasts were not in stereo yet...and I would guess that most LPs were not either quite yet.

Why would the BBC try to make a decent mix of it? That's my take...no capability  8 or  16 track TV...

PA - Brian's guitar is clearly down-mixed from the master tapes. I'm assuming Glyn Johns was recording on an eight track console; Brian would surely be prominent in the mix, as the rhythm guitarist.
Apart from No Expectations, he's partly audible in Parachute Woman, otherwise his guitar has been mixed into the bass guitar frequencies. There was clearly an obvious decision to mix him low/out in '95. But why?

I thought it was because he was wasted. Look at his eyes, when he is in the audience you can clearly see he is flying!

No, no, mate! No humility or yielding about it! I'm just hypothesizing about stuff here, I truly can't feature why he was mixed out of the official release, cause he sounds pretty together when you can hear him. And I've not heard any rehearsal tapes, so that's why I'm asking you cats/chicks here.
Maybe Brian really did screw up some of those takes (JJ Flash, YCAGWYW); maybe the Stones Inc. were trying to pull one of those weird things of writing him out of the band's history (ala what they tried to do with Wyman for most of the '90s and later).
Yo Gazza - can you shed any light here mate?
