Anyone venturing early picks? One thing I'm fairly sure of as much as it bugs me, USA is doubtful to get out of the group stage. One hope is that Ronaldo is hurt and Portugal falls.

Americans are always so funny when they call REAL football players foot fairies while theirs run around in tights and shoulderpads. The only thing missing on those guys is a nice purse. I don't mind of course...but lets not pretend its very masculent.
With that said: 1-5 for the Orange Boys against Spain last night! Didn't see that coming.. |

I'm married to a German. Having Germany and the US in the same group sucks!
This is football. The NFL is another thing entirely. I love it too, but it's closer to rugby with helmets and pads then it is to football. I fell in love with the sport as a kid while I was a goal keeper. Finally in the last 10 years or so we are getting decent football coverage here in the US. Not just MLS, but Premier League, CONCACAF, UEFA and World Cup. Love it! |

At least you don't hear N Americans say things like " Let's go watch The Footie!" Of course, not much better than " Are you ready fo' sum footbaaaaawwwwwwlllll?!?"
There is only one place in the US that truly celebrates the World Cup and makes it so much fun to follow...Washington, DC....those embassy folks are CRAZY!!! They have gatherings all over town. And whether your team loses or wins, there is always somebody ready to buy you a drink to celebrate or console. :booze :booze :booze :booze |

I guess the vast majority of Americans will never get football, as most people in Europe won't get most of your sports..I don't see any harm in that. @Moofie: Rhodesia is not in this one. Sorry man. New round of Africa Cup is in 2016. Perhaps they fare better there. But I hear Belgian Congo has a mean striker, so I wouldn't bet on you favorite. |

If all goes according to plan, the USA team will be home by round 2. Still: no one expected Spain getting spanked by my team, or saw the Costa Rica win coming. So never say never.
It is obviously not very likely though. Portugal and Germany have teams that could reach the final. Could bena special match. Yours I'll catch in the 2 minute highlights clip, as I'm sure you'll understand. |
Title: Re: World Cup 2014 - Real football! Post by Pdog on Jun 16th, 2014 at 8:10am
everyone so quick to rule out USA and Portugal…
games have been great to watch so far, except for for France, I can't stand that team… my least favorite. Honduras looked like shit against them too… only game that I recorded and skipped the last 25 minutes. It's has gotten more popular in the USA (the real football) but we don't promote it to boys, as a mans game. And if you took most of these shit talkers and had them try to kick, pass and run the field their fat asses would keel over. And they would tell you how bad ass they were at high school sports. Anyway, more americans might like the game, if they released how lucrative it is… sports aside, there's a shit load of money to be made. You'd think we'd at least be down with that… I support my country USA and Germany. Sucks… same fucking group. I'm always pulling for the underdogs too… I love a good upset game. and if Brazil advances because the refs keep giving them the calls… fuck that… I will pull for them to do well, until that shit happens… and it's bullshit.. I bought a $50 sling box, so I can watch the games on my phone and anything I record, from anywhere I got wifi or my data plan gets a signal... |
Title: Re: World Cup 2014 - Real football! Post by Teiz on Jun 16th, 2014 at 11:54am
Agree with you on the Brazil match. There was a lot of opposition against the tournament (or better: the circumstances under which it is held) and adding a ref that acted like a 12th player for Brazil the only way the corrupt FIFA could help putting a stop on it. Shameful.
Team USA is a group no one liked to play against. Obviously the Germans and Portugese have better players, But they wont be getting a win for free. Never say never... |

From what I've seen so far, the US were a better side than Portugal.
Ronaldo apart, they're an ordinary side. Keep him quiet, and you should do OK. Easier said than done, though. Ghana's performance against Germany puts the US team's win over them in perspective. A draw tonight should be enough to put the US in the next round. |

It's complicated Angie. The Germans and US are still in the drivers seat. Goal differential is the tiebreaker (NFL Tiebreakers are easier to figure out) plus I believe everybody in the group plays Thursday, although I'm not sure what time. But overall, what a tournament. The 2 USA games have been absolutely, edge of your seat exciting. Great competition overall. :willya |

Very entertaining match last night. In the end the better team won. Given the shape Argentina is in I'd say Belgium has a shot at the semi's. So if my guys beat Costa Rica that would be a Battle of the Low Countries in the semi-finals. There's been more than a 100 of them in the past. This would be the most important one. So I have my fingers crossed. Not holding my breath though. Both teams are not there yet.

I'd like to say the US accomplished a lot and had a great tournament. But looking back. They only won 1 out of 4 games they played. If it wasn't for Germany blowing out Portugal in the first game. They would have been going home sooner. They got just as far as they did in the last Cup. Being competitive isn't enough anymore.

Germany wins in workmanlike fashion. Brazil wins in a dirty, foul ridden game against Columbia.I guess we'll find out which continent plays the more beautiful football. :boring

I thought the Indian takeout guy threw some LSD in my curry last night..Brazil had it coming though.
So depending on what happens tonight, my guys are up against an unchained Germany or a frustrated Brazil this weekend...Oh well: I hope to meat our national next door neighbours again this sunday. (seriously: is there anyone who is insterested in the match for the third place?) |
Title: Re: World Cup 2014 - Real football! Post by Gazza on Jul 9th, 2014 at 10:13am
No. Not even the teams themselves or their supporters. Once they get knocked out, they just want to get the fuck home.
Unfortunately for Brazil, they're already home. Cant be easy going out and playing again after a drubbing like that. A lot of teams play mostly 'fringe' players who havent had much game time in the tournament. |

The players are fresh. And in a 23-man squad theres usually about 5-6 players who havent got any game time to that point.
I get what youre saying - there's a risk of losing the game (although its less of an issue if both sides do it) but the third place game is a bit of a dead rubber. Its a good achievement to finish third in the World Cup but even most diehard football fans would find it hard to tell you who won the various Third Place Play Off matches down the years. |

That 0-0 game was almost as boring as Germany's romp. For such a compelling tourny with great action. Not much of a Final Four. I sure hope the final game doesn't come down to a shootout. Just play until you drop. :will-ya

Title: Re: World Cup 2014 - Real football! Post by Teiz on Jul 10th, 2014 at 4:31am
I totally get why it was a boring game for the casual spectator. Thing is: they were more or less each others equals on the pitch (maybe Argentina was slightly better, but not by much) and each team had one player that had to be stopped (Messi and Robben obviously). Both teams succeeded in that. With so much at stake, football matches turn in to chess sometimes. I had a good time last night, though of course I would have loved to see my team in the final.
And thanks Voodoo, but I guess that's the role the Dutch play in these tournaments: they come close to the gold medal very often, but never grab it (save that one time in 1988 when we became European Champions). Each league in any team sports has those squads. Compared with some big football leagues you have that role for Tottenham Hotspur in England, or Schalke 04 in Germany.. |

why not play until someone scores..even take a few players off each side in overtime like hockey does to make scoring a bit easier? Yesterday was like deciding an NFL playoff game by sending out the kickers

I wonder if shit like this happens with concert tickets:
British World Cup ticket exec turns himself in: Brazil Ray Whelan, of Switzerland-based Match Services, arrives at a police station after being arrested in Rio de Janeiro, July 7. A British World Cup ticketing executive accused of involvement with a scalping network blamed for fraud worth tens of millions of dollars turned himself in on Monday after a manhunt, authorities said. Ray Whelan, a director of FIFA partner Match Services, who had left his Rio hotel before police could detain him last Thursday, surrendered to a judge in the city, prosecutor Marcus Kac told AFP. Police confirmed Whelan, 64, had been detained after turning himself in to examining magistrate Rosita Maria de Oliveira Netto. Authorities had been looking for Whelan after a judge ordered him and 10 other suspects to be held over a World Cup ticket fraud involving 1,000 tickets per match alleged to be worth tens of millions of dollars. The group allegedly began its activities at the 2002 World Cup. Match Services AG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Byrom plc, a British-based company that has provided services to FIFA and World Cup Local Organizing Committees since 1994. Attempts by the company to mount legal challenges to the arrest order foundered. Whelan had already been detained by Brazilian police last Monday, but was released the following day after paying 5,000 reais ($2,260) in bail. Police believe Whelan distributed free VIP tickets originally earmarked for non-governmental organizations, sponsors and players' relatives for resale via intermediaries. Could face four years "Whelan denied negotiating tickets with (fellow suspect) Franco-Algerian Mohamadou Lamine Fofana, his right-hand man, during the World Cup but we have proof of 900 calls between them during the event," police commissioner Fabio Barucke said last week. The pair are said to have discussed hospitality packages for games including Sunday's final, won by Germany. But Match Services has defended Whelan, saying he was innocent and that there was nothing illegal about the conversations. The Zurich-based company says Whelan was discussing the sale of 24 hospitality packages at the correct price, though he rounded up the figure to $25,000 from $24,750 per package, and that the deal was never concluded Whelan could face up to four years in jail if found to have been involved in activities including the illegal resale of tickets, associating with black marketeers and suspected money laundering. Match dubbed Whelan's initial detention last week as arbitrary and illegal. It annulled all tickets purchased by Atlanta Sportif, Fofana's company, saying he had pledged not to undertake any reselling to clients. Atlanta Sportif had bought 105 seven-match packages for 121,750 dollars each, according to Match Hospitality. Globo's G1 news portal quoted Whelan as having told his lawyer Fernando Fernandes that he could finally start seeking to clear his name. The suspects in the case face charges of organized crime, illegal ticket sales, corruption, money laundering and tax fraud. Match, the main provider of World Cup hospitality services, said last week that Whelan was voluntarily relinquishing his World Cup accreditation but that he had not committed any wrongdoing. © 2014 AFP http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/british-world-cup-ticket-exec-turns-himself-in-brazil |
