Title: Jagger Quote...what are your thoughts?
Post by Paranoid Android on Apr 23rd, 2014 at 8:31am
While reading an article in Forbes Magazine (on line), this banner popped up.
It's a quote by our very own MPJ...

Do you agree? Thought?

Forbes Thought Of The Day

“ People have this obsession. They want you to be like you were in 1969. They want you to because otherwise their youth goes with you. It’s very selfish but it’s understandable. ”

— Mick Jagger

Doesn't everybody wish, or at least think about being able to do the things when they were twenty-something?

It's OK to dream about going back in time, but it's selfish when that ability is expected from someone.

Its true in a way....I know I'd rather be looking forward to Sticky Fingers coming out than another Ian album wish thread!

Jagger is a reflection of what we wish we could be.   He symbolizes our fantasies.  We are not in love with the real Jagger, but with our perception of Jagger.

He is our Jesus.

He's (just) a (splendid and miraculously unpretentious) humourist, musician and entertainer, shirley?

He's no more Jeesus than Lily Allen is Sheezus on rag, shirley?

Its a good point which should also be a sobering analysis for fans who are delusional enough to still think of the 2014 version of the Stones as a band of outlaws and revolutionaries who are spiritually joined at the hip with old bluesmen - when the reality is actually that they're effectively a brand pitching themselves firmly at the nostalgia and corporate ends of the market.

Then again, its been the band's own choice to go down that route instead of trying to evolve creatively, so if their target audience have become 'selfish' as a result, they'll just have to cry all the way to the bank.

I think we just want you to write good songs and make good records.

I'll settle for them playing the songs in 2014 in a way that resembles the original riffs or beats or lyrics or...key...

Their baking without the recipes now...

Hey Mr. Jagger, would it be too selfish of me to ask ya'll to play more "rarities" and perhaps more stuff from pre-'69?

I don't care if you can't jump around anymore like Peter Pan, I'd just like to hear a really adventurous set.

If you mean the Nazarene Jesus, I pretty much agree.  For true Stones fans, on the divine continuum of holiness, Jagger is certainly much closer to Jesus than to some piss-fraud like that Joseph Smith.  I guess you could equate Jagger to Jesus.  (Jagger = Jesus*Nazarene).  Richards would be our Leviathan, using this logic.

MICK is correct, the fans are obsessed with hearing them play like they did in 69. They cant go back in time, we cant go back in time, and we all wish we were young again.

Bah...who cares about being young again...I just wish I was naive again...I've seen well behind the curtain now...

I doubt whether he was referring to youth/age in that (tidsy) quote - more how, in performance, he can be expected to dip into or draw on - or even embody - iconography of himself/The Stains at assorted periods, which he counters with humour, humility, modernity and a pumpy grooviness.

I don't think he's only referring to fans there. He's also referring to Keith.
