Gonna be an epic night. I always thought there was at least an outside chance that my man MT would one day appear onstage again with the Stones. It's happening, and I couldn't be more excited.

What do they open with? Something from the first album? Route 66? Not Fade Away?

Who cares?!

Stones touts get no SEATisfaction
Thousands of pricey tickets unsold for gig

By ANDY CRICK

SKY-high prices have left thousands of tickets unsold for tonight’s huge Rolling Stones concert.
The showpiece gig at the O2 arena is meant to kick off the UK leg of a world tour marking the Stones’ 50th year.
But after touts demanded as much as £3,000 fans boycotted it in droves, leaving Mick Jagger and Co with the prospect of playing to a far from sell-out crowd.
Tickets for tonight and a gig on Thursday at the 20,000-capacity venue in Greenwich, South-East London, went on on sale last month for £190 to £400.
Despite being the most expensive for a UK rock gig they sold out within seven minutes. But many were snapped up by secondary ticket agencies like Getmein, Via GoGo, Seatwave and Double8 Tickets which then tried to re-sell them for up to eight times their face value.
The agencies found it hard to get rid of them and by yesterday tickets were being offered for between £229 and £1,500.
More than 100 sets were up for auction on eBay — but some had no reserve price and were up for grabs for just 1p.
Fans blasted high prices on websites, with one named Gazza saying on It’s Only Rock’nRoll: “The mistake the touts made was in buying up tickets which were already overpriced.”
Earlier this month Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood defended the prices saying: “We’ve spent a million on rehearsing and the stage is going to be another few million — and the lights. We’ve got to make something.”

What should they do for the opening song??

Some talk about something from the 1st record...

what about Street Fighting Man? ... "sleepy london town..."

Or Jack Flash with the crossfire hurricane line?

Or surprise everyone and bust the door open with Doom and Gloom? Or One More Shot?

I've always thought Paint It Black might work as a dramatic opener... Or Sympathy... "please to meet you!"

thoughts...

If memory serves, they tried opening with PIB a couple times on the last tour. Nothing will top the from-left-field choice of Midnight Rambler for the club show in Australia.

Win-Win????? For WHO???? Win for the Bands bottom line...Loss for fans who couldn't get a ticket for various reasons...Loss for scalpers who can't dump the tickets (but who cares),
Loss for the Band's ego not to play to a physically full house

The show IS SOLD OUT...with many  THOUSANDS of tickets going to the scalpers and ticket agencies in the UK/US/Europe...
THOUSANDS of tickets not sold by them means many  THOUSANDS of empty seats...
You cannot tarp a sold out show...not even at the last minute due to logistics.

If you're only going to spend $250 then getting to actually see the band is a bit too much to expect. Maybe they will point a video screen in that direction.

Stones launch O2 show with an oldie

Mick Jagger performs with the Rolling Stones at the O2 arena in London on Sunday.

London - The Rolling Stones hit the stage at London's O2 arena on Sunday with a roar of approval from a sea of silver-haired fans as they tore into the old favourite I Wanna Be Your Man.

A swaggering Mick Jagger, dressed in sparkling silver and black, rolled back the years with the 1960s hit as he bounced onto a stage shaped in the red lips logo that is the calling card for one of rock and roll's most enduring bands.

Lead singer Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts are all in their 60s and early 70s, but have promised a two-hour show that will stun the crowd and include former band members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor as well as R&B singer Mary J. Blige and guitar great Jeff Beck.

“Everybody all right there in the cheap seats?” Jagger asked in reference to a controversy over the price of tickets. “They're not really cheap though are they? That's the trouble.”

A sellout crowd of 20 000 people was expected in spite of widespread complaints from fans at ticket prices that ranged from 95 pounds to up to 950 pounds for a VIP seat at the first of five concerts celebrating the band's 50th anniversary.

Costs went far higher on secondary ticketing websites, although by Friday eBay was offering several seats to Sunday's show at below face value and there were places still officially available at around 400 pounds apiece.

There has been talk of a wider tour, but for the time-being the only confirmed concerts are the five that have been announced. Two will be played at the O2 Arena in London, the first was under way on Sunday and another on Thursday with three others in the United States next month.

The flamboyant veterans behind a string of hits including (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, You Can't Always Get What You Want and Jumpin' Jack Flash have defended the prices, saying the shows are expensive to put on, although specialist music publication Billboard reported the band would earn $25-million for the four shows first announced. A fifth was added later.

The concerts are the culmination of a busy few months of events, rehearsals and recordings to mark 50 years since the blues-infused rockers first took to the stage at the Marquee Club on London's Oxford Street in July, 1962.

There has been a photo album, two new songs, a music video, a documentary film, a blitz of media appearances and a handful of warm-up gigs in Paris.

The O2 Arena was where another top band of the 1960s and 70s, Led Zeppelin, staged an eagerly awaited one-off reunion in 2007, and while the Stones have appeared together far more regularly, it is their first arena performance in six years.

One factor behind the long break has been Wood's struggle with alcohol addition, according to Rolling Stone magazine, while Jagger and Richards also fell out over comments the guitarist made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography.

“We can't get divorced - we're doing it for the kids!” joked Richards in a recent interview after apologising to Jagger.

While the rock and roll excesses of the swinging 60s and 70s are in the past for the band, and their very best songs may be behind them, music critics praised their recent single Doom And Gloom from the GRRR! greatest hits album just released.

And there have been hints from the band that the five gigs which wind up at the Newark Prudential Centre on December 15 may not be the end of their reunion.

“Once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain't gonna stop,” Richards told Rolling Stone. “So without sort of saying definitely yes - yeah. We ain't doing all this for four gigs!” - Reuters

This was only the beginning of the end of the end of the beginning, presumably.
Ronald looked - on this occasion - the most gorgeous, aesthetically, perhaps.
Gawd nose why Jeffrey Beckles was there, precisely, bit no probby.
What is the consensus on young Bill W's bass throbbles last night?  :nooslajaleisk    Saucy enough?
Hopefully they are contemplating writing literally scores of new tunes, or three or four, as we speak.
Perhaps - or not - they could extend the groove-out latter-parts of the tunes, when in the mood, at their next next HO-2 giggle? The last min of Tumbling Dice got rather saucy.
I am disappointed that there are no gorilla panties on sale but have improvised with lingerie, logo and steaming hot-press.

Really hard to do that show justice in words. For a fan it was almost life affirming to see them on that kind of form again.

Keith really was the unknown factor going into these concerts. So many shambolic performances in the last year of the Bigger Bang tour (although plenty of solid ones too, in fairness), the evident decline in motor skills that occurred post-Fiji coupled with what we know now was a fair amount of boozing, and then his subsequent inactivity didnt really bode well for his or the Stones' future as a performing act.

Something has obviously happened for the better in the last few months. Mick has even admitted that they 'weren't ready' to play the Olympics and it strikes me that a precondition of these shows happening were going to be that Keith got himself into the best playing shape possible. No Blondie Chaplin (which, from what I hear was Mick's insistence) ensured that he wasnt going to be doing any coasting.

Well, it seems to have worked - because that's the best I've seen Keith play in about a decade. Its not unreasonable for the band to be 'a bag of nerves on first night' after so long, but every single one of them were absolutely 'on' last night from start to finish. There were no trainwrecks - maybe Get Off Of My Cloud was a bit out of tune in parts, but a minor quibble - and while Keith seemed pretty reserved and maybe a bit edgy for the first three songs, once he ripped in to Paint It Black, you just knew it was going to be one of those magical nights. When Mary J Blige joined them on a ripping version of Gimme Shelter, it kicked up another notch.

The guest appearances - from ex-Stones and non-Stones - were all really good and none of them dragged the show down for a second. Quite the opposite in fact. Jeff Beck just ripped the roof off on Goin Down (I think someone must have went round the back and got the amps turned up to 11) and the guitar onslaught between him, Keith & Woody was wonderful.

Terrific to see Out Of Control back in the set again - always a marvellous live song, even though they didnt extend it as much as they did when it was  a highpoint on the Bridges tour. The two new songs sounded really good - Keith even did back up vocal on One More Shot.

Mick then introduced 'former band member' Bill Wyman to a huge roar and he stayed for two songs, IORR (ironically a song whose studio version he didnt play on) and a terrific Honky Tonk Women. The band seemed really pleased to have him there.

Bobby Keys and Tim Ries didnt appear at all until the band intros, and I think they were on only about 4 or 5 songs at most. It was very much a guitar driven show, with Leavell down in the mix.

Its also nice to report that, unlike the second half of the last tour, Keith is obviously quite capable of singing and playing simultaneously again. Before They Make Me Run and Happy saw him singing and playing beautifully.

And then....lights down....the familiar opening notes flickered, the stage lights came up..and they're into Midnight Rambler - and oh my fucking God, Mick Taylor is onstage with them. No introduction, he's just there. And get this, he's performing. You think Mick just stands at the back anonymously like in all those old clips from the 70s? Not tonight. He's gliding across the stage, going up front beside Jagger, and playing off him - and his playing is utterly incredible. Taylor is clearly having the time of his life and the band manage to deliver what was possibly the best version of Midnight Rambler theyve done since....well, since he left the band actually.  The absolute showstopper of the night and - whilst it may just be the initial post show euphoria - this could possibly have been the greatest thing I've ever witnessed at a Rolling Stones concert.

'Miss You' next - a bit 'meh' for me, but it wasnt bad and it got the crowd going. Warhorses from here on in, but all played well and some of them, such as 'Start Me Up' sounding surprisingly good. The lights went down at the end of Brown Sugar and at first I assumed that was the end of the main set, but then the familiar intro to Sympathy started which was a bit of a surprise to me - a song where Keith's had a lot of trouble in recent years with solo, but which on this occasion saw him managing it really well.  Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Lisa and Bernard came out around the back of the pit area for the 'woo woo' parts.

That was the end of the main set, but the final real surprise was still to come. The lights go up and there are not one, but two choirs on opposite sides of the stage singing You Cant Always Get What You Want. The Stones play it absolutely beautifully and then as the choirs are packed off they close an unforgettable night out with a monster of a version of Jumpin Jack Flash.

Apparently  'Satisfaction' and 'Lady Jane' were down to be played but were omitted because of the curfew.  They had brought the start time forward from 8.45 to 8 pm (apparently due to engineering works affecting the Tube) - but after the 'Gregory Drummers' intro (which consisted of about 40 people marching round the aisles in gorilla masks playing what appeared to be the intro to 'Sympathy'), the Stones took the stage at around 8.35.  145 minutes onstage - probably the longest theyve played in about 15 years.

I was at the back of the arena on the first level and even from there I thought it was fantastic from start to finish (and apologies to anyone hoping for a phone call or text - I couldnt get a mobile phone signal). I can only imagine what that must have been like for anyone up close. Saying that they didnt work the tongue stage as much as I would have expected.  Also, they didnt use video screens for the first three songs - it started with Paint It Black (the tongue behind the stage was used as a video screen and there were two screens high on the sides as well)

For the anally retentive like me - the first performance of 'I Wanna Be Your Man' since August 1964. . Live debuts for Goin Down and One More Shot. First 'Out of Control' since Seattle 30.10.05 and it's first appearance in the UK since 1999. And whilst I might need to double check, the first 'Its All Over Now' since the final Voodoo Lounge show in Rotterdam in August 1995. 'Doom and Gloom' has of course only been played at the two club/theatre shows in Paris last month.

To sum up - yes, a horrendously priced event, but performance wise the Stones cant be accused of taking the money and phoning it in. They rose to the occasion and performed to a standard which I never thought they would still be capable of reaching. Astonishingly great.

A great review Gazza, thanks! Midnight Rambler is definitely the number I'm most looking forward to and you've made be ten times more excited! I guess they had to do a lot of really special stuff to a) justify the price and b) stop themselves from becoming a nostalgia band like the beach boys. And between the special guests, the new songs, the unique stage effects and otherwise, it seems they did a pretty fantastic job.

It was perfectly predictable that, despite the outrage at ticket prices, all those in attendance would be on a high after the show and be under the impression that it was worth every penny. Whether or not it objectively was worth every penny seems now to be irrelevant.

Great review, Gazza, sounds incredible!  Can't wait for this to go up on Dime!

What a great Christmas present it would be to mix this one fast and get an official version up on Stones Archives ASAP.  Probably way to much to hope for, but a guy can dream.

He's gliding across the stage, going up front beside Jagger, and playing off him - and his playing is utterly incredible. Taylor is clearly having the time of his life and the band manage to deliver what was possibly the best version of Midnight Rambler they've done since....well, since he left the band actually.  The absolute showstopper of the night and - whilst it may just be the initial post show euphoria - this could possibly have been the greatest thing I've ever witnessed at a Rolling Stones concert.

About 15 minutes before the gig there appeared to be almost an entire block on the lower tier on the left hand side empty and lots of gaps elsewhere. However, by the time the lights were going down the place looked well filled to me. If there were gaps (and I would imagine there probably were) there didnt appear to be very many.

The 02 doesnt allow ticket touts on their premises as far as I'm aware and there were also none at the Tube station outside the venue when I arrived there around 3.20 pm. We left for the gig around 7 and made it there for 7.10 and the only people who stopped me to ask me anything were a Ukrainian Tv crew. They asked us to sing, so the guy beside me started 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and we all joined in....

Talking of TV crews, a guy from ABC came into the pub just as we were leaving wanting to interview some Americans - but I dont think there were any there at that stage (SV had to leave us around 6 pm for her pre-show dinner and I think they wouldnt let her leave in case she went outside and re-sold her ticket....As if!).

However, we met up afterwards for a few beers. I had a ridiculously early start, so I decided to forget about getting the last tube back to my hotel as two hours sleep was as good as four. We stayed until about 2.30, I got a cab back for 3 am and then got up again at 5.15 to get to Gatwick for an 8.50 am flight. I was in work two hours later! Needless to say, I havent been very productive.  If the above revew is a bit disjointed, take into account that I've basically been in a coma for the last six hours.

I'm hearing good rumours about Mickey boy regarding the three American shows. I really hope it's true, because not only would it be wonderful for the fans to see him like this, but it must be a fantastic experience for him to not only be playing with the Stones again but to feel the love he received last night. Both from onstage and the audience.

Ronnie's solo really sounded amazing on YCAGWYW. The bits I've heard are some of the best things they've played in over 30 years.

I wouldn't be happy if I was Bernard's wife. Lisa and Darryl look like they've been hanging out at the same buffets. I would have loved it if they had had Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor together once but they probably wanted each to have their own moment alone but you can always do both. That was probably going to happen on Satisfaction.

He just mentioned about another special guest and then introduced 'former bandmember Bill Wyman'.  And then thanked him again at the end of his guest appearance.

As I mentioned in my review, Taylor wasnt introduced onstage. They started 'Rambler', the lights went up and there he was.

It was an incredible moment.  Again, Mick only mentioned him at the end of the song by name.

The interaction between each of them and the rest of the band was really good. Lots of smiles and a few hugs.

Thanks. I actually read your review but I am so excited seeing the pictures of them with Taylor and Wyman, I forgot that he just joined when the lights went up.

I never thought I would say this because I was a firm believer in the Stones being a 2 guitar band but I'm almost to the point where I think they should just invite him back and have three guitars. I know people will scream in horror but it just looks so natural and after almost 40 years, that is extraordinary. It would never happen because it would honestly be a massive blow to Ronnie but one can still dream.

I read in one of the reviews that Taylor took a tiny break from shredding Midnight Rambler to plant a kiss on Keith's cheek.  Lovely moment, if true, and I'm going to pretend it's true regardless. No sense letting the facts ruin a good story, as Bill Perks said.

I sent SS a text about these latest events (he's totally off the grid computer-wise.)

I texted:  "Stones played MR with MT last night. All reports are they sounded like GOD." He said:  "Whoa. Dang. That makes me feel happy."  And then a few minutes later I told him what Bill played, and he answered:  "This all sounds crazy. Yet it is happening. I'm just trying to digest it all."

Me too, my Brother. Me too!

Rolling Stones Start Up Reunion With London Blowout by Paul Sexton, London  |   November 26, 2012 11:30 EST

50th Anniversary Kicks Off at O2 ... Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor Make Rare Cameos ... Mary J. Blige and Jeff Beck Guest Star ... 150 Minutes of Sweaty Rock n' Roll

"It took us 50 years to get from Dartford to Greenwich," said Mick Jagger to 20,000 close friends on Sunday night, at what you might call the lip of the 02 Arena stage. The Rolling Stones were in the process of laughing in the face of logic with an extraordinary, 150-minute celebration of their 50 peerless years.

This was the first of two 02 dates, with a second on Thursday, that have been widely pilloried in the British press for their exorbitant ticket prices. Jagger would soon acknowledge that discussion by looking to the top tiers of the arena and asking "How you doing up in the cheap seats? They're not that cheap though are they, that's the trouble."

For all the controversy, the fact is that you never hear anyone coming away from a Stones gig complaining that they didn't get value for money, and so it was again here. Eventually, that is. Despite some engaging guest performances including the much-reported reunions with former bandmates Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor, the core quartet didn't hit top speed until the show's second half. When they did, they were untouchable.

They were introduced by an irreverent film tribute featuring both "punters" and famous fans like Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop and Elton John, then by two files of black-clad drummers marching through the aisles. Augmented initially only by stalwart companions Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Darryl Jones (bass), it was a delight to hear the Stones travelling back to their first first year of recording, 1963, to revive their second-ever single, "I Wanna Be Your Man." Dartford rhythm and blues was alive and well again.

Performing under a giant red lip, with a giant video screen behind them and a semi-circular walkway out front to stretch out on, they continued in '60s vein with "Get Off Of My Cloud," "It's All Over Now" and "Paint It Black."

Vocalists Lisa Fischer and Bernard Fowler joined the line-up stage left, and before long Mary J. Blige was making the first of the evening's cameos to recreate Merry Clayton's soulful wail on "Gimme Shelter." If the overall performance was somewhat rough and ready, she and Jagger shared some impassioned vocal empathy.

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the opening exchanges was the role of Keith Richards, playing mainly rhythm as Ronnie Wood frowned in concentration at taking so many lead lines. That began to change on "All Down The Line," before their contemporary Jeff Beck came on for a full-throttle, first-ever performance of Don Nix's blues favorite previously recorded by Beck, "I'm Going Down." Suddenly the 02 was a sweaty R&B club.

In a middle section of depth and variety, the "Bridges To Babylon" track "Out Of Control" packed a powerful punch, the new songs "One Last Shot" and "Doom & Gloom" held up well, and Wyman joined the proceedings for both "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll" and "Honky Tonk Women." Richards, in supple vocal form, seemed to take great confidence from his familiar mid-set spotlight for "Before They Make Me Run" and "Happy" and, at last, became the Human Riff we yearned for.

Perhaps the unique highlight, though, came when Mick Taylor, the guitarist who helped change the very fabric of the Stones in just five years with them from 1969, rejoined for an exciting, epic version of "Midnight Rambler." The grins and pats on the back from Messrs Richards and Wood were heartfelt proof that it was pretty special for them too.

With Charlie Watts keeping up an almost impossibly vigorous backbeat, the show was now en route to glory. That was thanks in disproportionate measure to the incredible showmanship of a frontman who roared like a vocal leviathan and sprinted back and forth in as brilliant a display of gymnastic showmanship as he has ever given.

They performed the closing "Jumpin' Jack Flash" like a band playing for their lives, and with so much still in the tank that one thing became clear: the Stone age does not end here.

Something that seems to have been ignored but I think was somewhat intentional was the tribute to Brian Jones by picking I Wanna Be You Man because it's his slide that is the standout of that song and I thought Ronnie did a killer version of it.

The billboard review was the best review of the Stones I've read for a long time.

A few clams in there, but who's counting? Seems he had trouble hearing himself a couple times, too. Bet he'll be even better Thursday — and probably on a different song. (Here's hoping for "Sway".) He looked downright giddy to be up there, and I couldn't be happier for him. A long time — *too* long — coming.

Most investment banker types that plunk down a grand to see the Stones have no idea who Charlie Watts is, much less Mick Taylor.

They go because they remember getting wasted to "Hot Rocks" in college and know that Jagger puts on the best show.
They like to hold up their cell phones and sing along to Miss You.
Many bring their kids.

But Mick Taylor.. no, they dont know who he is.

If there are more Taylor performances with the band, I hope time improves what he contributes.
I must be missing it, as found his performance quite forced, actually detracting from the show-stopper song MR is.
I'm sure being there, seeing it, experiencing it was quite different.
Possibly there are other clips which will show a better performance.
Having said this, I am ready for my beating.

there were a few slip ups in terms of timing and infrequent bum notes, but you cant really knock what as essentially a 12 minute crowd-pleasing virtuosic solo! he seemed totally in his element to be up there with the band, beaming as he waved goodbye!

i'd love in the next shows for them to keep him on for a performance of Love in Vain, but time probably wouldnt permit

I think MT had more adrenaline pumping through him than he's probably experienced in a long, long time. He was fine overall, just a little lost at times, as the arrangement shifted under his feet. I think he's going to get dialed in, and blow us away. The chops, while not what they once were, are still there.

Look, how many weeks of rehearsals did they have in Paris?
If they wanted to pull this off, and what is being written is true about more shows
with Taylor, send the guy a ticket on the Chunnel for him to travel London-Paris & practice what is going to be played.
Sure he's rusty, or more likely overwhelmed to play before such a crowd again.

Yup. Or if they're going to ask him to wing it, then just do a 12-bar. The coda to "Sway" is just two chords. He could crush it.

I won't disagree that he looked silly. But I don't think he was trying to mimic Ronnie; I think it was just irrepressible, can't-believe-I'm-back-here giddiness. The more I watch this clip, the more I hear of him, and the better it gets. That's always the way it is with his playing. He flings out so many licks, fills, lines that you have to let them settle... that youtube mix isn't a good base to judge from, all I'm saying.. SV said it sounded like Brussels, and she was there... I trust that more than an unmixed youtube clip, those are so distorted and there's no instrument seperation, i'm telling it like it is too... I think we will know for sure come PPV night!

Zactly what I said in my post, you are making my point.

it's a point worth being made over and over... I may say it again, and act like i said it first...

Nothing would be cooler than to not only keep him on for the USa shows, but throw in more of his era stuff, like Sway and CYHMK... What a set that would be along with Rambler... Sunday was my FIRST EVER Stones concert! And what a concert, I'm still euphoric at how good it was and can't wait for next year! I was in Block 411, Row T and was dreading the seat but the sound was fanastic and the view was very good, they were small but not tiny specs.
2 highlights for me were Keith's solo during 'Going Down', the man's still got it and Wyman's appearance, yes he didn't add anything superbly different to Darryl but what was important was that he was there and by the looks of it on the screen he was actually enjoying himself. He slotted in, still as ever, and played what needed to be played, thats why he is a fantastic bass player!!

Just sharing my thoughts on an amazing night, I can see why you guys really are hooked on Stones concerts and I can't wait to do it again. Its a shame that 2012/13 are the only chances I'll have of seeing them!

Rolling Stones face £200,000 fine for gig over-running

THE Stones face a whopping £200,000 fine because their historic 50th anniversary gig at London’s O2 was 35 minutes too long.

They were meant to finish at 10.30pm on Sunday — but defied local council rules by continuing to play encores for their cheering fans until 11.05.

The band’s agent Bernard Doherty revealed yesterday: “It means a big fine — but the guys just do their thing.

“There wasn’t a janitor standing there, jangling his keys, saying. ‘I want to go home’.”

The huge fine is unlikely to trouble Mick Jagger and his chums.

They were set to net £15.6million even before a fifth concert was added to the four already announced.

Fellow legends Bruce Springsteen and Sir Paul McCartney paid a different penalty in July when their Hard Rock Calling concert in London’s Hyde Park over-ran. Their mics were cut off.

Gig was a total blur for Ronnie

RONNIE Wood couldn’t see any of the tribute banners from his fans at Sunday night’s gig — because he refuses to wear his GLASSES onstage.

The short-sighted guitarist can’t see the crowds — and relies on his bandmates to tell him what’s going on.

Ronnie, 65, said: “If I haven’t got my glasses on I can only see the first couple of rows.

“It was quite funny the other day with the signs people hold up.

“I went up to Mick and said, ‘What does it say on that sign there?’

“And he went, ‘I think it says you are rubbish’.”

The 5 Biggest Surprises From the Rolling Stones' London Kickoff
Ex-members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor still fit like a glove

From the comparatively stripped-down stage to Jeff Beck's cameo on "I'm Going Down," the Rolling Stones' first major show in five years Sunday night at London's O2 arena was full of surprises. We've compiled five of the biggest and are expecting plenty more at their remaining dates. Will Eric Clapton show up during their second night in London on Thursday? Jimmy Page? In New York, will Paul McCartney sing "I Wanna Be Your Man" with the band? We'll have to wait and see.

Readers' Poll: Favorite Rolling Stones Songs

1. Opening with "I Wanna Be Your Man"
The first song is arguably the most important moment of a Stones show, from the stripped-down "Not Fade Away" to kick off the Voodoo Lounge shows to the dramatic meteor explosion during "Satisfaction" on the Bridges to Babylon tour. This time, the band surprised fans with "I Wanna Be Your Man," which John Lennon and McCartney wrote for the Stones when they needed a hit in late 1963. "John and Paul flogged us a song which we've never played onstage before," Keith Richards told the BBC recently. "You realize this is a new song to me. You get into it and everybody's playing and you're going, 'This is amazing.' This could be almost a new song!" One prediction: With all the guests popping up at these shows, it's not far off to imagine McCartney joining the band for this song – perhaps at the December 15th Newark gig, to be broadcast on Pay Per View?

2. Keith Richards' playing
Fans have been considerably worried about Richards' playing since several erratic performances after he fell out of a tree in Fiji in 2007. And he's admitted he didn't spend the years following the Bigger Bang tour playing guitar. "I don't practice as much as I should, probably," he said recently. "But now that we're putting the act together again, I'm getting the chops back together." There were a few hiccups, including Richards flubbing the intro of "Honky Tonk Women," but fans agree his playing was better than it has been in years. Said "citadel" on fan forum It's Only Rock and Roll, "At the start he seemed almost nervous . . . Not moving much, playing the rhythm . . . Somewhere in the middle it was as if the old confidence, posing, playing all came back. Suddenly some great riffs, licks, solos, moving, posing, even running around." Added "rockenrohl," "Best Keef I've seen in more than a decade. He really got his shit together."

3. The length of the show
Even though the band cut two songs that had been in the night's set list ("Lady Jane" and "Satisfaction"), their 23-song set was one of the longest shows in their history, clocking in at over two and a half hours. Not too bad for a band whose drummer is 71 years old. "I think the band wants to give the fans their money's worth," keyboardist Chuck Leavell told Rolling Stone during rehearsals. "There's no secret what the ticket prices are, so I think we want to make sure that we deliver."

4. "Midnight Rambler" with Mick Taylor
Fans have missed Taylor's epically proficient playing since he walked in 1974, and his return has been Number One on every hardcore fan's wish list for decades (he did play with the band onstage in Kansas City in 1981). He returned full force during "Midnight Rambler." According to everyone who was there, the guitarist hasn't lost any chemistry with his old bandmates. Said "Silver Dagger" on the Stones forum IORR, "It was brilliant though and Mick was a bit sluggish at first, but then really up[ped] the pace. Grown men wept. It was almost like being transported back to the US tour in '72. Almost."

5. Bill Wyman still rocks
Whenever the Stones swing through London, fans always wonder whether Bill Wyman – who left the band in 1992 – will make a surprise cameo. Last night, it finally happened. While the Stones had announced Wyman would be joining the band before the London show, the image of seeing the 76-year-old original member back with his old friends wasn't any less moving. Wyman looked right at home, cracking a grin as he laid down a rock-solid groove on "It's Only Rock and Roll" with Charlie Watts while Keith and Ronnie wailed away on Chuck Berry-style licks, and sticking around for "Honky Tonk Women."

It's also surprising Wyman didn't play on more songs. Surely current bassist Darryl Jones would have understood taking a backseat to let Wyman play the entire show to celebrate their 50th anniversary, but it's likely the band didn't want to disrespect Jones, who's played with the band since 1994. "Darryl doesn't get enough recognition," Richards told Rolling Stone in October. "He and Bill can talk about songs they want to step in and out of." Here's hoping Wyman gets more songs on Tuesday.

You never heard Ringo harmonise like that on The Beatles' version!

Thanks to my friend Natalia from Kiev for finding it!

Rolling Stones face £200,000 fine for gig over-running

THE Stones face a whopping £200,000 fine because their historic 50th anniversary gig at London’s O2 was 35 minutes too long.

Awwwwww boo fucking hoo.

If you withdrew $200k from any of their personal accounts they'd never even know it was missing. Would have no idea!

For christsakes.. They tip the caterers $200k

If Jagger dug down into his pocket and pulled out £200,000, he'd probably confuse it for lint and toss it away.

Somehow I doubt they'll actually have to pay it. I'm sure something will be worked out. :-/
