Title: The best six songs on Sticky Fingers
Post by Voodoo Chile In Wonderland on Apr 23rd, 2011 at 10:31am
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sticky Fingers I’m gonna be the guest on the Radio Station next Friday, since the programme is only one hour long and we discuss the music, sometimes we played six songs only (or seven when they are short), so please let’s create the track list for this occasion, help me with this, voting.
  • Multiple option, don’t waste your vote selecting only one, select six or seven
  • Guests can vote

BTW, You can modify your vote, you have 24 hours from your vote to do it

Very difficult decision to make!  I was torn and frayed btwn CYHMK, DF, and MM.  Voted for MM...a true gem.

Top 6 =

1st 4 songs (timeless) = 10/10
DF = 10/10
MM = 10/10

Bitch, IGTB, and SM are 9.5/10
YGM is 7/10

Could make a case for Bitch over Dead Flowers...possibly

I voted for BS/WH/CYHEK/DF/MM & Let It Rock, although LIR wasn't on Sticky Fingers, at least not the North American version, not the one I bought when it came out, it might have been added later.

Absolutely! But remember, you can vote for more than one song, the poll is about the six tracks that MUST be played on the radio station and not about your favourite song(s), so you can delete your vote and vote for six or seven songs

"Let it Rock" is there because it was a b-side on the "Brown Sugar" single (RS 19100, released some days before Sticky Fingers, on April 16, 1971)

As far as I know it has never appeared in any version of Sticky Fingers, not even as a bonus track however it was the third song to appear as part of the "Sticky Fingers" release. It was recorded live - Leeds University on 13th March 1971 and released one month and three days after on 16th April 1971!

Ok I voted.
Sway
Wild Horses
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
I Got The Blues
Sister Morphine
Dead Flowers
Moonlight Mile

Couldn't keep it to 6. Left off Brown Sugar. Just because I'm so tired of hearing it at this point. Tough call between the fun rocking Bitch and the lovely I Got the Blues. But the blues it is.

As far as I remember, 'Let it Rock' replaced the banned 'Sister Morphine' when the album was first issued in Franco-era Spain.

The album cover was changed there too.

I had to go with seven.  Hard to mess with perfection.  Sticky Fingers is my favorite album period - by the Stones or anyone else.

Wasn't easy either.  Left off Brown Sugar - hear it all the time and it's been a Pepsi ad for pete's sake.  If folks haven't heard that by now they've been living in a cave.

Yes, it did but it was also in the British (and European) version of the first single. Since the very first edition RS-1900 released in the UK, the single had “let it Rock”, the cover only showing Brown Sugar and Bitch, so this was the sequence of covers:

16th April 1971, the single issued in this picture sleeve

Some days later, on April 23rd the original cover, check the location of the legends “Rolling Stones” and “Sticky Fingers”

Then the Spanish banned version with “Let it Rock” instead of “Sister Morphine” (Glad Spanish censorship didn’t read the lyrics of other songs LOL)

Later editions have the texts located in different positions:

On CD we have:

This year, for the “Record Store Day” this was the single, check the differences against the original cover (reposted below)

As you can see the original single cover has the picture as "mirror" (see the Sticky Fingers albums covers they have)

Wild Horses and Moonlight Mile are running neck and neck for #1.  All the songs are fantastic.  I remember the day this came out.  The excitement with the album cover then the first listen.  Caused some sticky ears.

Here we had a different single, I had it at home as it was my brother's single and it was great with "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses" on side "A" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" on side "B"

Here "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" was "translated" as "Ecos de mi Onda"!! ("echoes of my wave") LOL

This was a bitch.  I had to go with the most historically and culturally significant songs - so You Gotta Move, Let it Rock, and I got the Blues had to go (though those are all historically significant - two R&B covers and an Otis imitation).  And I love those songs.

Is there a dispensible song on Beggars Banquet or Let It Bleed?  Exile?  So why do this?  Is it because WE NEED A TOUR !!!  ???

I voted for seven:

Wild Horses
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Bitch
I Got The Blues
Dead Flowers
Moonlight Mile

This was the "Golden Age" of the Stones (1968-1972) - along with Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Exile, one of the Big Four.

I almost picked eight, but I went with the six:

Brown Sugar
Sway
Wild Horses
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Sister Morphine
Moonlight Mile

This was a tough decision to make, cutting it down to six. Maybe I should have kept Bitch and Dead Flowers as my initial vote.
