I visited the El Mo July of '78, right before the 4th of July Stones show @ Rich Stadium-Buffalo
Elvis Costello had just played there, Albert King was to play that night. Small place, probably a great take that fabled night... Side 3 of Love You Live is one of the best Stones live recordings....ever |

I used to trade tapes with a guy in Ottawa many years ago who won a radio competition for tickets to one of the shows. he literally had about 6 hours to get from Ottawa to Toronto but made it. (he was the same guy who sent me a very low gen tape of great quality Dirty Work outtakes long before they were ever widely circulated) He doesnt post on the boards, but some of you who post on IORR might know jamesdouglas who posts there, and who plays in the same band as him. The band intros on Love You Live are very strange. At one point, there's a shout from the audience of "Billyyyyyyyyyyyyy" at Billy Preston which comes from one of the strongest and most unmistakeable Belfast accents I've ever heard in my life. I know we've a lot of emigrants in Toronto, so its either one of them or one guy from my hometown was one incredibly lucky bastard. |

The FULL gig??
As far as I'm aware, only about 30-40 mins of one of the two shows has ever circulated (it was uploaded to the tracker yesterday for anyone who's interested), with some new mixes, etc. http://rocksoff.org/messageboard/YaBB.pl?num=1208190298/850#850 Is this one the same thing? |

Title: Re: El Mocambo Header Post by pops Richards on Mar 6th, 2010 at 12:39pm
Hi
A friend of mine sent me this El Mocambo thread....I am new to the group... I am the "Ottawa guy" mentioned in one of the postings...who had the original Dirty Work listening tape back in 1985 before tthe LP was released....it was a 2nd generation copy of Ronnie's listening tape ....the quality is unbelieveable.......I got the tape from a sound engineer I met during the 1984 Olympic Games ..........he contacted me in the spring of 85 (still have the post card he mailed telling me about the Dirty Work mixes..) Yes I also attended the March 5, 1977 El Mocambo show......I was in Montreal on business and was called at 3pm by my girl friend (now wife) to say we won the CHUM FM contest....I flew out of Montreal on Canadian Airlines flight 5.05pm and arrived at TO airport...rushed by taxi to CHUM FM on Yonge St. in time to get on one of the buses for the contest winnners... The show was incredible ...I wrote an article for IORR back in 1982'ish detailing my experience and the set list for that night. Keith signed an autograph for me....I was standing beside the stage immediately beside the sound board.... Following the show we hung around in case any of the Stones came back out.........after about 15 minutes Ian Stuard came out and started packing up some of the equipment.... I walked up to him and asked him for an autograph......he looked at me and said why do you want my autograph?.....and I replied... "because I know who you are and what you really mean to this band..." .....he broke out in a big smile......it was a great 'Stones' moment for me... I played for 15 years in a Stones band 1991-2006.....I re-joined with James Douglas (former singer with my band Torn and Frayed) in 2007 and we formed a band called the Powergoats ...our first CD was very Stones influenced .... We are finishing off our 2nd CD now....if anyone is interested check out http://www.reverbnation.comww.reverbnation.com/thepowergoats especially THREE MINUTES, STUCK OUT, BRAND SPANKING USED - cheers Pops Richards |
Title: Re: El Mocambo Header Post by Ginda on Mar 6th, 2010 at 1:49pm
Great story, pops Richards! Especially the exchange with Ian. It's always fun to read first hand accounts. What an experience.
|
Title: Re: El Mocambo Header Post by platter on Mar 6th, 2010 at 2:23pm
powergoats? what a silly name for a band.
i don't believe his story until i see proof from a ticket stub, the article he wrote or keiths autograph. :whydontcha |

NO..despite attempting to buy my way in. CHUM_FM the local rock station of the day had been running a contest and then the winners found out on a bus they were going to the El Mo to see the Stones( from memory and hope that is correct). Anyway I tried to buy a ticket and offered $1000 to security however the band had invited Maggie Trudeau the PM's wife therefore unless your name was on the checked security list you couldn't get in so I was screwed. Months later I was able to grab tickets for the Oshawa blind date and ended up in the first 5 rows. Ashamed to say it but the poor blind folks couldnt tell I really belonged way in the back! |

I have known this guy for 25 years (Hi David) and he's a great Stones fan and totally on the level. He did a story about winning the radio contest in IORR magazine in the early 80s. If you were a Stones fan then who was a fan club member you might have read it (you could always buy a back issue if you need to). Totally legit. Maybe you could welcome someone to the board is a more tactful manner. Why is it so difficult for you to believe that someone actually attended a Stones show? |

Title: Re: El Mocambo Header Post by Gazza on Mar 6th, 2010 at 4:12pm
Not EVERYONE feels the need to post on every thread. And he didnt just 'jump on and brag' - he's been a member for several months but like many people lurks instead of posting - someone asked if any RO members were at the gig, and he was directed to the thread by someone who read my post which identified him. Why is it so unusual and unbelievable that a fan got a band member's autograph? I've a signed photo from Charlie. Its not a big deal. Do I need to upload it so you can believe me?
He doesnt need to prove anything. I KNOW he was at the gig. Fair enough? Now stop hijacking this thread with your obnoxious bullshit. Crap like that actually discourages genuine fans from posting here. |

Yes, it was Ronnie. Although I suppose the press thought it was a better story if they hinted it was Mick. Poor ol' Ronnie. When he gets the chance to be at the centre of an international incident and get tongues wagging at a bit of salcious gossip, Mick still manages to steal his thunder by just being in the same band, despite doing nothing at all. |

Ah, not really! I joined here today since our reverbnation site showed an incoming spike of traffic from this one. Good to see you hear too, Gazza! Yes, David's (Pop's) stuff is all real, legit, I've seen it myself - it's all hanging up his home studio. It's not his only autograph from Keith, and certainly not his only autograph of a Stone. Dave also made me a cassette copy of the DW sessions back in 1994. Later, when I had no way of playing tapes, I tried to get the same stuff elsewhere (iorr forums, etc). the quality was horrendous, I thought there must be similar pro-sounding qulity of it elsewhere. No luck yet. Good thing I still have the tape! |
