Title: Five things that would have improved GHS
Post by Zack on May 15th, 2009 at 2:04pm
1.  Open it with Hearbreaker instead of Mr. D.
2.  Substitute Criss Cross Mind for Silver Train.
3.  Let Taylor rip a killer solo on Coming Down Again instead of turgid sax dirge.
4.  Tone the strings down on Winter and don't fade the solo out.
5.  Slap Jimmy Miller in the face and tell him to produce the thing like the previous four albums.

7. better tunes - this was when the Jagger-Richards partnership first started to deteriorate

1. Change the opening track or at least re-record it with some balls. Mr D was probably the weakest opening ever to a Stones album. (it was great in concert, though)

2. Include Criss Cross Mind instead of one or two other candidates.

3. Mix the bloody thing properly (thank you, Virgin and Mickboy for correcting things)

4. What Joey said.  ("Joey in sensible post" shock!)

5. What speedfreakjive said.

-add Living In the Heart of Love
-Longer solo during fadeout of 100Years Ago
-Sax solo is good on Coming Down Again
-put on Waiting on a Friend
-Silver Train needs better production, more raw sound
-Angie needs to sound more like Brussels version
-Don't do a thing to Starf---, it's awesome

Here is my list of proposed changes...

1.  Substitute Criss Cross Mind for Can You Hear the Music?
2. Add one more fast rocker.

Some good points, but WOAF as it was back then wasnt really finished. It was definitely improved with overdubs years later.

Living in the Heart of Love was an IORR outtake, not GHS.

Ohhh I wasn't quite sure about LITHOL, I mix up the 72-74 sessions a lot.  I usually try to avoid "what-ifs" like the WOAF one, cause then it would affect a later album as well.  But for some reason, a Jimmy Miller/Mick Taylor era piano-heavy version of the song would fit in with Coming Down Again and Hide Your Love, I feel.

Good points, all...while I dig this album it's their first mis-step after that string of pearls (from Beggars Banquet to Exile).

New lyrics to 'Can You Hear The Music'....nice groove, insipid words.  Indeed, I think the same of "Dancing With Mister D" and "100 Years Ago".  And, yes, add "Criss Cross Mind".  Also, the acoustic "Silver Train" instead of the electic....

Why all the hate for Mr. D? I agree it's not a Stones classic (they only played it live in '73, right?) but it's not too bad...

GHS isn't a hugely flawed album, but it has so many little flaws that they add up to a lot after a while...

Goats Head Soup is one of those releases of the Stones that sounds dated to me.
I like it - but unlike Exile and IORR, it seems particularly early 70s in its sound.
That said, it is still my favorite wake up Stones after a long night because of the slower tunes.

Dancin With Mr. D. - wrong opener.
One of those songs where they seemed bored playing it.
Heartbreaker would have been fine and Starfucker would have set the tone the best.
I like the idea of a strong closer, but Silver Train could have done the trick.

Why Do You Hide Your Love has some of the best slide ever, but I hate the lyrics -- could have been a more inspired tune given Taylor's fine work.

100 Years Ago is a strange song - I like the end and the runaway guitar - kind of 70s funky like Fingerprint File, but it always seems mismatched with that beginning.

Coming Down Again should go.

I agree with quite a bit of this.  The "lazy bones" interlude in 100 Years Ago is really the only bit I dislike.  Coming Down Again I find is just too long=gets boring.  Mr. D is a fine song but not as an opener.  The live versions (or Johnny Winter's version) of Silver Train are better.

I absolutely agree it sounds dated...the wah-wah guitar/clavinets sound cool but they sound old, too...

And the cover/album art I've never been crazy about...and what's with the fucking title of the album? Where'd that come from?

I like the song...it's just too long and boring...if it were tightened up and a bit shorted I'd like it even more...

Is GHS really a Jamaican delicacy?

It's also known from Turkey to China.
I've had some GH-soup here in Berlin from a turkish restaurant - one can tackle a dish if you don't have a look in the pot  :pukey
........otherwise it tastes quite good.

The studio version is a plodder. As one reviewer put it, "It wouldn't frighten a four year old".

Yes, only played live in 1973 - when they injected some much needed balls into it and showed what COULD have been.

The lyrics are a little cheesey, too...as I've said here and on IORR, a good song, just not a good opener...and way better live (the Wembley and Brussels versions are great)...

Ya think? To me, 'Silver Train' absolutely smokes. A bit of a throwaway lyrically, but a terrific rocker, and that harp playing is wonderful.

I think Mick's OTT campery in the video maybe adversely affects how it's been remembered, though!

I dont think anyone's said they 'hate' it. Just that when you look at what had opened the 4 albums before it - Sympathy, Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar and Rocks Off - all classic songs that make you sit up and pay attention from the opening couple of bars and which set a great tone for what follows throughout the rest of the album  - it suffers badly by comparison.
