Title: (NBC) I Saw Prince Last Night
Post by ijwthstd on Mar 29th, 2009 at 12:09pm
He was playing 3 shows in 1 night at the LA Live complex, the Nokia Theatre at 7:00pm (7,100), Conga Room at 9:30 (1,000) and Club Nokia at 11:59 (2,500). I went to the first show. Until the day of it down to either Prince or Suicidal Tendencies. I have always wanted to see Suicidal but would rather not do so in the presence of other Suicidal fans.

Decided I would see Prince if I could get in under my terms. I never even seriously listened to him other than what little bits I heard on the radio Purple Rain era. I won Coachella tix last year and to my surprise it was a great show. Found myself a ticket for Nokia at what I thought was the last minute. It didn't start til 7:40 though.

I was in the third row of the balcony. Unfortunately it was just okay, but kinda weak compared to Coachella. Coachella was an amazing guitar show. Last night, the guitar was buried, the bass was too loud and either his shows are inconsistent or he was holding back and pacing himself so he could make it thru the other 2 shows.

About 50 mins into the show I was getting annoyed by the person next to me so I moved to an empty seat on the front row balcony. Towards the end I started to get bored and amused myself by flinging cough drop wrappers off the balcony and watching them flutter down. One drifted a few feet in front of a dude on the aisle seat below and his head jerked when it caught his eye and started bobbing all around following it like a cat does a bouncing rubber ball. For some reason seeing that made my night.

Sheila E came out and sang lead on The Glamourous Life and then it was over after 90 mins. I was sick and on downed a whole bag of cough drops but I wasn't done yet so I headed over to the Redwood for the Binges and Carnage Asada and picked up a second bag on the way. Got to the Redwood and the Binges were no longer on the bill. They are okay but I like to watch the guitar players. It was only $5 and I was hungry so I went in anyway. The bill was Carnage Asada, Vagrant Vinny and The Black Tibetans. I dig the Redwood and I macked out on some sweet potato fries.

Any questions?

You just admitted to choosing Prince over Suicidal Tendencies and I believe I saw something about Sheila Easton too. I'd highly recommend you do a quick CYA and add a part involving a plastic fifth of gin, and a skanky, trailer park queen and her daughter who blew you as you gave them a ride to this atrocious nightly activity

I was actually hoping to have a part about hanging out with Mayuko and Tsuzumi  of the Binges but sadly, it was not to be. And that was part of the reason I chose the Prince show because I knew it would be over in time.

Just Purple Rain.

It had been piling up in my pockets but as it turned out last night, it's place was over the side.

This is much better, I'm still noticing a remarkable absence of trailer park queens, but I'm giving you a D+ for now, make your revisions and have it in by the end of class

The last time I saw a trailer park queen was in the 1980's escorting them at gunpoint during "The Trail Of Tears" when the last remaining trailer park residents in Los Angeles County were deported over the county line into Ontario.

A year ago at Springsteen 2nd night at the Pond, when I was just as sick or even sicker from forcing myself out anyway, I was throwing the wrappers with the cough drops still inside, though not out of boredom -

"

The stand up or sit down debate has been raging on message boards as well as in concerts catering to a geezer audience for the last decade or so. At this show I was really tired and didn't mind sitting but would just go with the flow of the audience. But there was this 60-ish drunken buffoon two rows ahead of me on the aisle (I was second seat off the aisle). He would intermittantly stand and sit all night. Except he was really too drunk to stand so he would go out into the aisle and grab on to the railing. This blocked my view. It wouldn't have blocked my view if he was capable of standing at his seat. The people behind me were sitting and I didn't want to impose on them.

Anyway I thought this idiot was going to take a tumble down the stairs. He fell down backwards once. Then he would just sit on the stairs. At one point an usher told him to go back to his seat and he let loose with a flurry of exaggerated hand gestures as she headed back down to her spot. Not longer after he would be standing in the aisle again.

Finally for the last 8 songs I just stood up even though he kept standing and sitting on the stairs. The lady on the aisle in the row in front of me apparently couldn't quite fit in that row so she had her feet into the aisle. At one point he sat down on her feet and she jerked back. Usually I am pretty laid back and tend to accept any and all types of behaviour that's exhibited at concerts but after watching this play out all night I was getting pretty annoyed with the dude and threw a cough drop right as his back. He quickly jumped up, over and right back down in his seat, glared at the woman behind him, then about a minute later started feeling around the ground to find what hit him."
