The Rolling Stones tour without Wood

NDTVmusic.com

Tuesday, July 22, 2008: (London) :

The Rolling Stones are considering going ahead with their upcoming tour without Ronnie Wood.

There have been rumours that Wood had left his wife, Jo, for a 20-year-old Russian waitress.

Mick Jagger, reportedly wants to carry on with the forthcoming tour, even if it means leaving Wood at home.

According to a source, "Mick officially becomes a pensioner at the end of July and Keith (Richards) at the end of the year, and I think Mick wants to get another tour under his belt in case it gets to the point where he can't do any more."

"Ronnie has always had his drink and drug problems but his marriage was rock solid. What's happened now is just something else and Mick and everyone can't quite believe it. Mick is still dead set on going on tour and has even said that they will do the gigs without Ronnie if it comes to it," adds the source.

Pals are hopeful the tour might give Ronnie the impetus to get himself right again and try to salvage his 23 year old marriage

(story appears in todays Daily Express)

Hope this is another one of the stupid rumours going around lately...  :wtf3

What would be the point of going on like that?
Just think about it. Imagine if Keith suddenly can't tour cause of his fingers or his head. Then it would be the Stones without Ronnie and Keith. Then what if Charlie decided to stay at home?

Even the thought is ridiculous.

The implication that any tour is "upcoming" is absolute horseshit.

There's absolutely no indication from any credible source that the Stones have any concert activity planned in the near future - certainly not in 2008 and probably not for at least 12 months.

And also there were absolutely no quotes in the article. If Mick really said they will tour next year they would have stuck a quote or two in there. I don't believe a word of it.

yeah it wouldnt be the same without Woody, would it? Maybe someone great could pull it off, but it wouldnt be the true Stones. Like now when you go to see THE BEACH BOYS, there are no original Beach boys left in the band anymore! So its The Beach Boys cover band, and the RS without RONNIE, the stand-in would be a cover person, not a real Stone. Not that I'm saying no one else could play the licks, because thats totally possible. As a matter of fact Satisfaction the RS Cover band plays the Stones better than the Stones themselves, because they duplicate the songs exactly as they were originally played on the albums, and the RS cant do that anymore!

Gazza,

The title of this thread talks about The Stones touring in Europe.

However, I'm not seeing mention or reference of any country or continent in the article. All I'm seeing printed is simply a "tour".

Not to imply that I could care less about a tour in Europe or anything. I just noted the title of this thread is sort of strange based on it's content.

Law Enforcement? Not really, lol. I always assess things by just looking at simply what is stated by someone speaking or reading the print without any pre-conceived idea.

The only time any reading into something should be done is if they leave you not much to go on. Then you have to.

That's all.

Other wise, I try and go by exactly what is stated. It isn't really a "keen eye". Just a simple "taking things for what they are" approach is all.

Good point.

The story as it was printed in the Daily Express mentioned Europe. It wasnt online however at the time I then found the story on the internet. The (syndicated) online version of it - aimed as it is at a wider audience - doesnt give any specific details.

Wouldnt read too much into the 'Europe' part of it anyway. a European/UK newspaper will tend to put a 'local' angle on it to keep it 'relevant'.

yes, I know the RS dont duplicate the songs as played on the albums, because they dont play that way. My point is, some other guitar player could replace Ronnie by playing the songs 'by the book' and it could work.

Not sure how that means it would 'work' as it defeats the purpose of live performance to sound like a record. Do people actually go to see concerts merely wanting to hear an exact duplication of a studio recording? God help us. Maybe for bands that are predominantly synthesiser or programme-based but certainly not for a guitar-orientated band. I dont know of any proper band who attempt to do that.

Its also pretty much impossible to accurately duplicate 40 year old studio recordings anyway, I would think.

Just a passing thought, and probably a too wild one... but if the Stones did have to tour and or/record without Ronnie, there is still one original surviving member who is still in good health and still plays well and would be able to slot back right back in, giving back that original lineup authenticity without compromising quality. And although he is now in his early seventies, he only has to just stand there and play his bass, no need to leap around, cause that's all he ever did.

As for Ronnie's guitar parts, there is another very intersting English guitarist who may be able to sit in for a tour. His name is Eric and he has a long parallel history to the Stones.

Just some wild thoughts....

Indeed. However, the bassist in question has no interest in touring with the Stones plus there's the significant issue of his aversion to flying.

Both problems were significant factors in the reasons for his departure and unfortunately I havent seen any indication that they have been or will be overcome.

Cant see the Stones bringing in someone as high profile as Clapton, to be honest but at least its a change from the delusional Taylor lobbying we've had to read in the last week which has been akin to vultures swooping on a still warm carcass..

Maybe they try to - I dont know, as I dont listen to them. Bit of a difference between 60's and 70's studio recordings though.

However, you're reinforcing my point - we'd be at a pretty low ebb if the Stones were the sort of Eagles-like band who were trying to soullessly duplicate their studio material on a concert stage.

I'd rather swallow razor blades than endure that.

Agreed! The Stones never sound the same twice on a particular song.

Why go see a band live if you're just going to hear duplication of their studio work? Makes it look like they are miming to a recording.
