Title: Meggie Queen of Arkansas...
Post by Starbuck on May 5th, 2008 at 11:51am
Meg!

Bought "Greetings for Asbury Park" a month ago and am digesting it now that "Kinks Week" is over...

just wondering how you springsteen nuts think this album compares to band on the run, beware of darkness on the edge of town, and nebraska me why....the only other of bruce's albums that i am overly familiar with.

i seriously dig bruce...but i don't dig him the way i dig my stones, dylan, bowie or beatles....

All Old Bruce is excellento...

Feel free to keep exploring...

Have you already ingested "The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle"? That should be next on your list.  And do feel free to ask ..

I am soooo glad that Kinks week is over

Greetings wouldnt be close to my favourite Bruce album - although aside from Mary Queen of Arkansas and The Angel (both of which I've never liked) the rest of the album is really good.....the songs when played live, though, are another matter...and its still a better album than Born In The USA, Human Touch or Lucky Town.

My favourite is probably either The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle or Born to Run.

Starbuck - you have blasphemed by referring to Bruce's meisterwork 3rd album as "Band on the run". Please edit your post immediately to avoid further distress and embarrassment.

It was the first album of his that actually made sense to me - I was long familiar with the man's music, but Greetings was the first disc that really made me "get it." I certainly like everything on it - Mary Queen of Arkansas was an early fave of mine, actually - and it has a wonderful sound to it.

These days, it's his second album that stands as my favorite, but I still have a soft spot for his debut.

For me it's 'Darkness', 'The River' and 'Nebraska'.

'Human Touch' and 'Lucky Town' each have their moments, but imo would've made a killer single album.

Of course 'Tracks' is a whole 'nother story...  ;)

"Tracks"..well there are no words....
But my fondness for the oldie Bruce will never go away

And Bucksterly..

As a teacher, do you not understand the word no with all its synonyms??  I will choose to ignore how you have defaced/devalued the sweet honey bee by placing it on Biliary's shoulder.

Bucky, start with side two of "The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle" and then move on to "Born To Run" and "Darkness On The Edge Of Town."  You can always go back to "Greetings" and the rest of "Wild and Innocent" later if you get hooked.

i started with nebraska...then a friend burned copies of darkness, the river and born to run for me...born to run and darkness took no work to get into...fabulous albums...the river just never caught on.

nebraska, on the other hand...well, that is nothing short of otherworldly.

not much else out of nebraska is worth the price of admission, however...just the album.

I'm not a Springsteen nut, in any way, shape or form, but at one time I owned all his material up through Tunnel of Love and Live 75-85.

I think the best Springsteen album ever was the boot, Fire on the Fingertips.  My second favorite and the only other one that I can listen all the through without skipping songs is Greetings.  Unlike Gazza, my favorite songs on the album are "Mary Queen of Arkansas," and the song immediately following, "Does This Bus..."

Through overplaying, Classic rock radio has ruined Born to Run, Born in the USA, the River, and, to some extent Darkness, in my opinion.  I do like 10th Avenue Freezeout and Jungleland from the first, and a lot of Darkness is okay.  I never liked Nebraska to begin with.   On Live 75-85, the extended version of Growing Up and the Darlington County / Working on the Highway medley are very listenable.

I can't stand Tunnel of Love, even though that is the only tour that I saw Springsteen in concert on.  I don't know enough about his post "Live 75-85" work to comment on, but nothing has really caught my ear.

First Bruce bootleg I ever heard..and most of the song titles were wrong! All the songs are now on 'Tracks' now, though.
