Title: Fav. Rock Drummers from 60's/70's.
Post by Heart Of Stone on May 3rd, 2008 at 10:47am
I went on several websites to check lists as considered best drummers, believe it or not, Neil Peart (Rush) was at #1 on several top 50 lists & so on, I didn't list him here, I don't think there's a lot of Rush fans on here, there was a post about Rush once & it was shot down like crazy.
There's more then 1 option, as many as you like, there will most likely be somebody missing, there always is, but these are the 30.

Nice selection, some great drummers missed in that list: Where is Bill Bruford, Jim Capaldi, Corky Laing, Michael Shrieve, Ric Lee, Buddy Miles, Roger Earl,  Lee Kerlsake, Fito de la Parra, etc??

Good list. :) Believe it or not, a very highly regarded drummer {among drummers} was Dino Danelli of the Rascals. Your list is a good start!  ;) No matter what you do, you will always leave somebody out of a poll. It's inevitable.

Thanks Sioux, I had Dino Danelli on the list to pick from, but only having 30 selections, I had to pick the most popular ones.

That's ok... :) I have a big book about rock drummers, and I was pretty surprised to find Dino so high on the list. That's why I mentioned him. 8-)

Nice pickup on the missing Bill Bruford, Gerardo!  I also would have had Stew Copeland and Clem Burke in there, not to mention Sly Dunbar!

Isn't it ironic that Frank Beard is the only ZZ Top member that doesn't have a beard?

I think maybe if he DID have a beard, it'd get all tangled up in those drumsticks of his... ;)

Took the words right outta my mouth - Clem Burke in particular.
I'd add Jerry Nolan as well.

Yep, he's THE ONE. When they made Keith John Moon, they definitely broke the mold. No one else even comes close.

Well, I gotta admit it, I was one of them. The question was about best drummers of the 60s-70s and he was one of them, see his work with Genesis, Brand X, Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, Tommy Bolin, John Cale, Brian Eno, Thin Lizzy, or the Prokofev version of Peter and the Wolf, etc etc

As drummer is by far better than many of the list, as a musician and a composer unfortunately is too much commercial for me, I don'y like his solo stuff, only "In the Air Tonight" and "his cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows"

Not your list, the one you linked to...your source list was poor I meant to say.  And as for post 1979, your polls all stop there....why?  There's lots of good rockin' after 1979.

BTW, other missing drummer in both lists is Chester Thompson

It's easier & simpler to keep to a certain time period, because the sky is the limit if it was for all time greatest drummers in rock, & also I'm more familiar with the 60's & 70's, the 80's had good music too, U2, Police, & all the new wave artists & Reggae to, which was in the 70's,  I'd like a poll for the 80's/90's, but it's not my generation sort of thing, I'd like to see someone do that, that's more familiar with it.

Which is why Hal Blaine played on many of the Beach Boys records.  Blaine was one of the most sought after session drummers in the world during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond.

Good grief, YES! Hal Blaine played on over 1000 hits, mainly  in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. He played with just about anybody. He has a book out that I have really been meaning to buy...heard him interviewed on Mark Lindsay's radio show, and he is one talented guy. Not a youngter anymore {born in '29, I believe}, but he certainly had an interesting musical career.... 8-)

Speaking of drummers...when the Byrds went looking for one, they picked Michael Clarke...NOT because he was good {he'd never drummed in his life!}, but because he looked like Brian Jones.... ;) :)

MOON Blew me away

One Name missing for me is Dave Clark of the 5, saw him live and those drums and had to play.
Ringo and Watts showed me how to play with a band.
Baker, Bonham, Miles, all great influences

BUT Moonie  was and is the best Rock drummer of the period, for Showmanship,  and Creativity
Krupa had he been in this time frame would have blown them all away but than theres RICH, that another story.
